Hoverflies (Diptera: Syrphidae) provide crucial ecological services and are increasingly used as bioindicators in environ- mental assessment studies. Information is available for a wide range of life history traits at the species level for most Syrphidae but little is recorded about the environmental requirements of forest hoverflies at the stand scale. The aim of this study was to explore whether the structural heterogeneity of a stand influences species richness or abundance of hoverflies in a montane beech-fir forest. We used the catches of Malaise traps set in 2004 and 2007 in three stands in the French Pyrenees, selected to represent a wide range of structural heterogeneity in terms of their vertical structure, tree diversity, deadwood and tree-microhabitats. -

Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park Diptera Survey Report 2007 OS Grid Ref TQ367824. This report covers the species of Diptera seen at Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park on three survey visits during 2007. These visits were conducted on 19 May, 14 July and 29 September, and were deliberately timed to take advantage of known peak flight periods for many Diptera. The surveys build directly on surveys conducted in 2006 by the author, and in 2001 by Colin Plant. Diptera specimens were individually targeted using hand net and pooter, as in 2006. The original intention of the 2007 had been to focus on the ponds around the Soanes Centre and on areas of Anthriscus sylvestris Cow Parsley at the edge of woodland glades within the park. In the event, though, much of the Cow Parsley was removed during the year due to habitat enhancement and management work undertaken. The decision to concentrate on the marginal vegetation around the ponds was taken partly out of necessity, but also because it was observed that the vegetation there was likely to be at the peak of its biodiversity cycle, being well established, but not too thick and dense, and therefore ideal for many species of diptera. Diptera are excellent indicators of the 'health' of a habitat, because they are a large and diverse group. The species accounts below are intended in part to provide information that may be fed into the Park's management plan. It should be noted however that the species list remains inevitably skewed because of the impractability of employing a variety of surveying methods. -

Zahvalnica "Tvoje trenutne okolnosti ne određuju gde možeš otići, nego samo odakle počinješ." N.Q. Sa zahvalnošću konstatujem da su okolnosti u kojima je nastala ova doktorska disertacija bile blagonaklone, pre svega zbog ljudi koji su na različite načine bili povezani sa pojedinim fazama istraživanja. Jedan od onih koji je bio tu od samog početka je dr Ante Vujić, mentor, učitelj i uzor. Njemu dugujem ogromnu zahvalnost za ohrabrivanje i podršku tokom svih godina zajedničkog rada, prenošenje znanja, kao i za veliku inspiraciju za bavljenje naučno-istraživačkim radom. (2008): Syrphidae from Hersbruck / Bavaria (Diptera). The hoverfly fauna of Hersbruck and its environment (Northern Bavaria) was investigated from 1975 tili 2004 with different intensity. There were recorded in various habitats altogether 265 species including 125 (47 %) rare to very rare and 89 (34 %) endangered species. This variety corresponds with the well structured densly wooded low mountain area. The most important sites (39) are described. For each species are given frequency, number of specimens, flight period and, as known so far, habitat requirements and flower visits. Zusammenfassung Die Schwebfliegen-Fauna von Hersbruck und Umgebung (Nordbayem) wurde von 1975 bis 2004 mit unterschiedlicher Intensität untersucht. Dabei konnten in vielen verschiedenen Biotoptypen insgesamt 265 Arten nachgewiesen werden, darunter 125 (47 %) seltene bis sehr seltene und 89 (34 %) gefährdete Arten. Diese Vielfalt entspricht der gut strukturierten, waldrei-chen Mittelgebirgslandschaft. Die wichtigsten Fundorte (39) sind beschrieben. Bei jeder Art sind ange geben: Häufigkeit, Individuenzahl, Flugzeit und, soweit bekannt, Biotop ansprüche und Blütenbesuch. Einleitung Meine faunistische Bearbeitung der Schwebfliegen von Hersbruck und Umgebung währt nunmehr bereits 30 Jahre: von 1975 bis 2004. So wird es höchste Zeit, die Ergebnisse einmal vollständig zu publizieren. Natürlich war in diesem langen Zeitraum die Erfassungsintensität sehr unterschied lich. Further insight 12 into the temporal relationships of pollinators and their flowering partners is required to 13 inform conservation efforts. Here we examined the phenology of: (i) pollinator flight; (ii) 14 insect-pollinated plant flowering; and (iii) extinct and endangered pollinator and plant species 15 in Great Britian. Over 1 million records, spanning four centuries, were collated from the 16 historical databases of three British insect monitoring organisations, a global biodiversity 17 database and an authoritative text covering the national flora. Almost two-thirds (62%) of 18 British pollinator species have peak flight observations during late summer (July and 19 August). This was the case across three of the groups studied: aculeate wasps (71% of 20 species), bees (60%), and butterflies (72%), the exception being hoverflies (49%). By 21 contrast, there is marked temporal partitioning in the flowering of the major plant groups: 22 insect-pollinated tree species blossoming predominantly during May (74%), shrubs in June 23 (69%), and herbs in July (83%). -

(2004): Hoverfly communities (Diptera, Syrphidae) in vegetation comple- xes of river valleys near Bonn (Germany). – Volucella 7, 157-183. Stuttgart. In the Drachenfelser Ländchen near Bonn (Germany) both the regional hoverfly fauna and the vegetation are well-known, especially in the river valleys, where a long- term research project has been conducted. This project enabled the study of hoverfly communities to be carried out for the first time on the basis of defined vegetation com- plexes (sigma-associations). Along selected river sections the syrphid fauna of linear alluvial forest complexes of black alder and willow was studied using an adapted transect sampling regime. From 4187 observations of 71 hoverfly species it could be demonstrated that the different alluvial complexes have their own distinct syrphid communities, with differential species groups (e.g. as shown by representativity analysis). Furthermore, 2534 flower visits were observed to 73 plant species and 4 syrphid species were added to the regional checklist. In the present text the quality of data engendered using this new method of stratified hoverfly sampling in vegetation complexes is assessed, and the method is discussed in comparison with other methods for landscape scale inves- tigation of hoverflies.
