The Gala Committee, headed by Lana Marrash and Paola Repetto, has really assembled an amazing evening that indeed puts the “Fun” in Fundraising. Their hard work and the generous donations of our many sponsors make it possible for us to have this wonderful evening and accomplish great things at the same time. The wines, the spirits, the fabulous holiday getaways... the array of luxury goods we have on offer this evening is simply astonishing. Enjoy this gorgeous venue and the amazing treats in store for you tonight, and we hope you feel great about the wonderful charities – and the women and children around the world – that will benefit from this evening. So, my friends, grab a glass of bubbly, have a delightful dinner, raise those paddles, open your checkbook – and then I’ll see you all on the dance floor! AWG-ily yours, Kathryn Brown 4 GALA CO-CHAIR’S WELCOME This journey started at an AWG drinks gathering last September.. By the end of that fateful evening, we both found ourselves, to our surprise, accepting to volunteer our services as Co-Chairs of the 2017 AWG Annual Gala… despite initially only intending to be part of the committee. What an adventure it has been. From starting out as a two-woman 2017 AWG Gala team with a handful of other volunteers, to the disappointment Co-Chairs of losing members along the way (due to unforeseen family or travel obligations), finding ourselves at times overwhelmed with Lana Marrash (left) the sheer enormity of the task ahead. Then finally having a lovely new member in Petra Graf, who’s been a steadfast third full-time Paola Repetto member of the Gala Committee. (right) Our grateful thanks go to Sara Sautin who has graciously helped whenever she was in town, to Géraldine de Kersaint-Gilly, for accepting to take on the major responsibility of securing champagne and wine donations for this year’s La Vie en Rose Gala, and finally, to the amazing AWG Board members who gave of their time with enthusiasm to help whenever needed, most notably Kathy Araujo, Amy Haas, and Rebecca DeFraites. Last but not least, a big “MERCI” to our President Kathryn Brown, who was to become our partner and advisor throughout this amazing journey, offering us her experience and steady guidance.   • Enlightenment Walking Tour 4
    France and Paris were changed dramatically by the Enlightenment and ensuing French Revolution. Likewise, many of the monuments and buildings you’ll see on this walk were “reinvented” during the 18th century. The Panthéon, where this walk starts, began as a church sponsored by an absolute monarch and ended the century as a monument to the country’s most famous Enlightenment figures. The place de la Concorde, where the walk ends, saw one monarch celebrated with a statue and another executed on the same site. Saint-Sulpice and Saint- Thomas-d’Aquin were transformed from churches to secular “temples” and back to churches again. And the Palais du Luxembourg, Hôtel de Salm, and Palais Bourbon, homes at the beginning of the century to royalty and aristocrats, ended the century as homes to the country’s newly created democratic institutions. In addition to showcasing neoclassical buildings and monuments, the walk also provides an opportunity to wander through part of the Saint-Germain des Prés quarter, one of the city’s most lively and interesting neighborhoods.     Société des Artistes Français Grand Palais - Porte C - Avenue Franklin Roosevelt, 75008 Paris Le Pont Alexandre III Cet ouvrage d’art fut construit pour l’Exposition Universelle de 1900. Il avait, entre autres, pour objet de célébrer l’amitié franco-russe, marquée officiellement par la signature d’une alliance entre le Tsar Alexandre III et le Président Français Sadi Carnot en 1891. La première pierre fut posée par le tsar Nicolas II, la Tsarine, son épouse, et le Président Français Félix Faure le 7 octobre 1896. "1 sur 14" Son trajet a été choisi en vue de relier l’Esplanade des Invalides avec le Palais de L’Elysée en passant par les Petit et Grand Palais. C’est un pont métallique de 165m de long et de 40m de large, fait d’une arche unique. Il a été classé monument historique en 1975. Il porte l’inscription : « Le 14 avril 1900, E. Loubet, Président de la République Française a ouvert l’Exposition Universelle et inauguré la pont Alexandre III. » Un pont très semblable a été construit à Saint Pétersbourg, le Pont de la Trinité ou Troïsky pour célébrer l’Exposition Universelle de Paris. Outre les ingénieurs Jean Resal et Amédée Ally, les architectes Cassien-Bernard et Gaston Cousin, tous deux Sociétaires des Artistes Français ont participé à la construction de l’Ouvrage. Les sculptures, frises, et autres décorations ont été exécutées par des Sociétaires du Salon des Artistes Français.     1. Eiffel tower ::::::::: What would Paris be without its symbolic Eiffel Tower? Built by Gustave Eiffel to commemorate the centenary of the French Revolution, it is presented at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1889. 324 meters high, it is one of the most visited monuments in the world with nearly 7 million visitors a year. The ascent of the Eiffel Tower is a must to enjoy the magnificent view of Paris. Tickets booths are located at the foot of the tower; you can go up via one of the two elevators, but after standing in line several hours, especially in summer. For the more adventurous one, it is possible to use the stairs and climb the steps (1,665 to the summit). The first floor houses the Eiffel Tower 58 which extends over two levels, 58 meters above the ground as its name suggests. On the second floor, the view is the best at 115 meters because you have a diving view on the ground below. Finally on the 3rd floor at 275 meters, you can see what the office of Gustave Eiffel was. Begun in 1163 and completed in 1345, this cathedral is a sight with its portals surrounded by his many sculptures and gargoyles that adorn the roof.

Only the Archivision Digital Research Library meets the needs of students and faculty – for both research and teaching – in the disciplines of architecture, landscape architecture, and urban planning. We do not offer a subscription service – you must sign a site license agreement and pay a one-time license fee for the Library – then you may keep the images and related metadata in perpetuity with no additional annual fees. Copyright: Rehs Galleries, Inc., New York City, 2008 The Sites of Paris - Yesterday and Today Featuring Paintings by EDOUARD LÉON CORTÈS (1882-1969) Paris has been a cultural center for hundreds of years, as well as a world capital for fashion, food, art, and literature. The many monuments built throughout the centuries have documented its illustrious history. Countless artists have celebrated Paris by illustrating its history through their paintings; one such artist was EDOUARD-LÉON CORTÈS (1882-1969). It was at the turn of the century, c.1900, that he began painting scenes that he would become most famous for – Paris’ streets and monuments. One of the more prolific artists of his time, Cortès found his niche and stayed with it. His views of Paris are among the most telling and beautiful of this genre; capturing the city during all its seasons for almost 70 years. The attention and great interest surrounding Cortès’ paintings and the city of Paris, has inspired us to create an ‘historical’ virtual tour and exhibition of the streets and monuments once painted by him. Included are paintings by Cortès that depict the Paris of old and photographs taken by Lynsi Spaulding* during the summer of 2005. We trust you find this exhibition not only enjoyable, but educational. *Lynsi Spaulding completed her MA degree in art history in 2006.
