Welcome to the very first Gloucester Cathedral Wordfest – a celebration of all things ‘word’. Join us for an amazing weekend of talks, poetry, music, comedy, storytelling, crafts and much more...

Whether you want to whet your intellectual appetite, find out what it’s like to be an author, listen to readings and live music or just relax with a drink and a good book in our beautiful grounds, we’ve got something to suit young and old alike.

Plus we have a full programme of free events, games and workshops taking place all weekend, so put the date in your diary and come and join the conversation.

We are delighted to be supported by Gloucester Quays and partnering with Waterstones Gloucester for this event.

As well as our ticketed talks, we have a whole weekend of free community and family events to engage you with the word and inspire the writers and artists in you.

Wordfest 2018 On top of this, throughout all of Saturday and Sunday, there will be pop-up performances by local poets and musicians as well as free workshops and craft activities designed for all ages. Gloucester Brewery and Waterstones will be on site all weekend, as well as some amazing street food, so bring the whole family along and be part of the conversation.

Concerts & Recitals Jazz in the Lady Chapel: Dom Franks and the Strayhorns Gloucester Cathedral Lady Chapel

The StrayHorn quartet was formed in 2010 to showcase the lyrical original compositions of Cheltenham-based saxophonist Dom Franks, a former student of Jazz Messenger Jean Toussaint, and winner of the Daily Telegraph Young Jazz Musician competition. The band’s sound is accessible, lyrical but rooted in creative improvisation and hard-driving grooves. Wide-ranging influences include Robert Glasper, Kenny Garrett, Kneebody and Joe Lovano, as well as Vaughan Williams and Afrobeat.

This concert will focus on material from the band’s newly launched third album Living With Spooks. The lineup will feature guest pianist John Law , as well as regular members Billy Weir (recent winner of the Tony Levin ‘most swinging drummer’ award), bassist James Agg) and Alex Steele on keyboards.
