The park began life in A1815 as part of the Spa Pleasure Grounds, and Y was opened as a park B RU TO NW A Y in 1848. A war memorial at the park entrance commemorates both World Wars and the W E Korean War. S T G A T On the way to the bandstand, you will pass a E S 1930s statue to Robert Raikes, born in Gloucester T 1736, and best known as one of the founders of the Sunday School movement.

C A S T L E R I V The priory is the best preserved medieval M E R E A S E Dominican house in Britain. The followers of St. D V E S R N Dominic arrived in Gloucester in 1239 and built L O N D O N R D W their priory over the following 40 years. The A

Y site chosen was a vacant part of the outer bailey of the NormanB RU TO NW A Y castle.

W E The impressive remains are ranged around a S T G cloister with the church on the north side A T E containing the original scissor-braced oak roof. S T Other notable buildings house the prior’s lodging and the friar’s dormitory on the east. To the south is the magnificent scriptorium and library, lined with the friar’s study cells.

The Church of St Mary de Crypt and the Old Crypt Schoolroom stand in the historic heart of Gloucester. During the Civil War it acted as a munitionsA store; you can still see Y the pock mark from a Royalist cannonball. A Y This underground chamber on Eastgate Street revealsB RU TO NW Athe Y remains of city defences and the East Gate, dating back to about AD 68 when W E S Gloucester was founded as a Roman settlement. T G A T E The site includes Roman remains, the base of a S T 13 th century tower and the Tudor “horse-pool” where wagons and livestock were washed before market. A section of the chamber can be viewed through glass panels in the floor outside Boots.

The King’s Bastion contains remains of the Roman city wall and a defensive tower probably constructed during the reign of Henry III, and is located under a trapdoor in the King’s Walk Shopping Centre.

After the S T G Dissolution, Llanthony was used for agricultural A T E purposes before the Industrial Revolution left S T its mark. Miraculously Llanthony survived, its listed buildings and grounds now lovingly restored and open for visitors.

on this site since 1307.Y The last surviving structure was demolished in 1956 leaving the B RU TO NW A Y Tower as a prominent city centre landmark. W E S T It is presently the headquarters of the Gloucester G A T Civic Trust and the departure point for city E S guided tours. T

The present tower was built in 1465 and for many years a curfew bell was rung at 8pm and 4am each day to warn householders when to extinguish and re-ignite their fires.

The standing remains incorporate part of the north wall of a minster church built around 900 by Aethelflaed, the Lady of the Mercians. In 909

C she created a shrine here to St. Oswald by A S moving his relics from Bardney in Lincolnshire. T L E R I V M E R E S Aethelflaed and her husband Aethelred were A E V D E both later buried here. In 1152 the church was re- S R N L O N D O N R D W founded as a priory of Augustinian canons A when a cloister, tower and other ranges were Y added. FollowingB RU TO NW A Y its Dissolution in 1537 part of the site was converted into a parish church W E dedicated to St. Catherine. The priory buildings S T G suffered damage during the Civil War siege of A T Gloucester in 1643. E S T

The National Waterways Museum is located at C Llanthony Warehouse, the largest of the A S T warehouses built at Gloucester Docks on the L E R I V River Severn. The expansion of the Docks M E R E A S E and building of warehouses in the early 1800s D V E S R N meant the city quickly became a hub for world L O N D O N R D W trade. A

Y Llanthony WarehouseB RU TO NW A Y was built in 1873 and was used for storing over 2,000 tons of grain; other W E S warehouses stored timber, corn, wine and spirits. T G The museum allows visitors to learn the story of A T E Gloucester’s canals, rivers and trade history, and S T the lives of the thousands of people who lived and worked on the waterways.
