    Superb Régence carved limewood (tilleul) console by Bernard Toro S-form legs rest on a lobed base and support a rectangular top. Magnificently carved large dragons seem to chase the terrified winged bearded satyrs at the top of the legs. A large scrolled acanthus leaf is carved onto the base of each leg. An exquisitely carved mask of a grimacing Medusa, her hair alive with a writhing nest of snakes, centers the frieze. Her delicately incised eyes are enclosed in beautifully formed eyelids. The lobed base has a protruding half-round central section carved with rounded scales flanked by recessed gadrooned panels. It supports a pair of large eagles, carved in the round, stooping to pick up eggs with their beaks. [Small damage to the nose of the bearded figure on the proper left. It is a favorite wood for carving, although not frequently used for French furniture-making. It is somewhat soft with a fine grain that can be smoothly carved in any direction. The most famous European sculptors who worked in wood often used limewood: Tilman Riemenschneider and Ignaz Günther in Germany; Grinling Gibbons in England and Aubert-Henri-Joseph Parent in France.

    VAUX LE VICOMTE L’AUDACE D’UN VISIONNAIRE DOSSIER DE PRESSE ENTRE FAITS ET LÉGENDES… Quelques idées reçues sur Vaux le Vicomte. ▶ Louis XIV décida de faire emprisonner Fouquet lors de la fête du 17 août 1661. FAUX. Le jeune monarque avait déjà décidé 2 mois plus tôt de faire condamner Fouquet. En agissant ainsi, Louis XIV voulut marquer le début de son règne par un acte fort d’autorité. Cette décision fut largement Influencée par Colbert qui jalousait la réussite du Surintendant et qui chercha à jeter le voile sur ses propres malversations. ▶ Le Surintendant avait amassé toute sa fortune « en se servant dans les caisses de l’État. » FAUX. Les historiens s’accordent désormais à dire qu’il sut tirer profit des complexités du système financier de l’époque et d’une éthique conciliante pour grossir une fortune déjà considérable. Une fortune qu’il tenait essentiellement de son mariage, de ses investissements et de ses différentes charges. Vaux le Vicomte n’est pas pour autant le fruit d’un esprit vaniteux mais d’un amoureux sincère des arts. ▶ En 1661, Le Nôtre, Le Vau et Le Brun sont d’illustres inconnus. FAUX. Les trois artistes jouissent déjà d’une solide réputation. Le Nôtre est « premier jardinier du roi aux Tuileries », Le Vau a déjà dessiné plusieurs hôtels parisiens et Le Brun reçoit de nombreuses commandes. Le génie de Nicolas Fouquet consista à les réunir pour la première fois autour d’un grand projet. Grâce à lui, ils eurent enfin la liberté d’exprimer tous leurs talents. ▶ Le domaine fût bâti en seulement 5 ans.

    Christophe Veyrier (Trets 1637 - Toulon 1689) Silenus with the infant Bacchus (‘Faune’) This unusually large and spectacularly conceived terracotta is the modello for the large statue Veyrier carved in Calissanne stone for l’hôtel Boyer d’Aiguilles (or Éguilles) in Aix-en-Provence (230 cm. high: now in Musée des Beaux-Arts, Marseille, inv. S.69). The house was begun in 1675 for Magdelaine de Forbin d’Oppède, widow of Vincent de Boyer, seigneur d’Aiguilles: it was completed by their son, Jean- Baptiste de Boyer d’Aiguilles (1645-1709), conseiller au Parlement d’Aix, who had an important collection of 16th/17th-century paintings. The design of the house is traditionally given to Pierre Puget, for whom Veyrier worked for many years. Indeed, Veyrier had married Puget’s niece in 1674. Having been based in Genoa since 1663, Veyrier was living in Toulon by 1678 and he moved to Aix-en- Provence in 1680. In Aix, Veyrier sculpted eight stucco figures, now destroyed, for the triumphal arch erected for the ceremonial entry to the city of Louis-Joseph, Duc de Vendôme. By 1682 he was employed in the Toulon Arsenal workshop under Puget, whom he replaced four years later on his master’s departure, but none of Veyrier’s ship decorations appears to have survived. His bronze replicas of antique works, his statues of Lysimachus, Jason and Samson as well as others made after Gianlorenzo Bernini’s works and commissioned by Louis XIV are also untraced. The extant works he produced at Aix in the 1680s include the marble statue of the Dying Achilles (1683; London, Victoria and Albert Museum) and the marble relief of Alexander and Darius (1688; Stowe, Buckinghamshire).

    LE BAROQUE ET LE CLASSICISME L’Italie, terre natale de la Renaissance, est le pays où, dès le milieu du XVIe siècle se développe un nouveau style architectural et artistique : le baroque. Rome, surtout, mais aussi Venise et Florence sont des villes d’où ce nouveau mouvement se répand pour gagner, bientôt, toute l’Europe catholique. Il y brillera pendant deux siècles, c’est-à-dire jusqu’à la moitié du XVIIIe. Le terme – baroque – que les historiens de l’art ont attribué postérieurement à ce style, vient de la langue portugaise. Le mot barroco y désigne une pierre de forme irrégulière, ou encore, comme l’indique le dictionnaire Le Petit Robert, une perle de forme irrégulière. Selon le dictionnaire cité, l’adjectif est utilisé pour déterminer quelque chose qui est d’une irrégularité bizarre, quelque chose de choquant, étrange, excentrique. Le côté choquant, dramatique, théâtral et la surcharge décorative sont les principaux traits caractéristiques de l’architecture et des arts baroques. L’illustre maître du baroque italien Gian Lorenzo Bernini24, en français dit le Bernin, que l’on a surnommé le second Michel-Ange, dans sa sculpture Extase de Sainte-Thérèse (église de Sainte Marie des Victoires à Rome), crée une véritable scène de théâtre à laquelle assistent des spectateurs placés sur les côtés de la composition. Cette œuvre d’une étonnante sensualité, qui est le parfait exemple de l’esprit baroque, réunit dans un rapport étroit la sculpture, la peinture et l’architecture. L’objectif de l’esthétique baroque est de frapper les sens, les émotions. Son rôle est de rendre stupéfait le spectateur.
