Development Without Destruction Economics of the Spinning Wheel Nandini Joshi 1 2 Development Without Destruction Economics of the Spinning Wheel Nandini Joshi Navajivan Publishing House Ahmedabad- 380 014 3 Rs. 100/- @ Nandini Joshi First edition Copies 1000 November 1992 Printed & Published by Jitendra T- Desai Navajivan Mudranalaya, Ahmedabad-380 014 4 for my parents JYOTSNA and UMASHANKAR JOSHI 5 6 PREFACE This book is an attempt to put forward a simple but, for that very reason, powerful concept of the spinning wheel (the charkha). The concept derives its conviction from the fact that the charkha provides a concrete strategy, universally available to one and all, which has a tremendous impact both on the individual and on society. It is incredible as well because it offers, as this book proposes to discuss, a specific solution to complex problems, an unmistakable solution to perplexing problems and a common solution to a multitude of problems simultaneously. The charkha is of course an age-old instrument belonging to all parts of the world till just two centuries ago. After the 'industrial revolution', it was Mahatma Gandhi who revived it in India, achieved great success and yet could not, during his lifetime, achieve his cherished dream he had perceived through it. As a philosopher has put it, no force is so powerful as the idea whose time has come. Is the charkha such an idea? Although the charkha is usually considered a useful instrument in some cases, the purpose of this book is to indicate that it is indispensable for tackling a multitude of problems.

  • Gujarat's First Educational Conference: a Study
GUJARAT'S FIRST EDUCATIONAL CONFERENCE: A STUDY Mr. Ramesh Malabhai Chauhan Abstract Education played an important role in creating political consciousness in India. The present research paper aims to discuss how, following the Swadeshi movement, there was an increased public awareness about education, which led to the Gujarat's first education conference, organized as a part of the movement to improve the prevailing condition of education in Gujarat. The researcher intends to delineation how this conference made an important contribution in creating public awareness about education in Gujarat by establishing Gujarat Kelavani Mandal (Gujarat Education Society). This research paper is divided into three parts. The first part deals with the movement for improvement in prevailing condition of education in Gujarat following the Swadeshi movement, the second part deals with the organization and working of the first education conference with the aim of offering suggestions to government and princely states regarding improvement in the prevailing education system and to inspire people to establish private education institutes; and the third discuses the outcome of this conference in terms of findings. Keywords: Educational awareness, Demand for improvement in prevailing education, Gujarat's education conference, programs and policies for the improvement of education. Behind every major event or incident, there are always many factors at work, contributing to it over the course of time. The event itself comes about as a result of these factors. Similarly, the roots of the first conference on education in the state of Gujarat, organized in 1916 with the aim of a comprehensive discussion regarding education in the state, can be traced to the reform movement in education initiated by the state’s literate populace following the swadeshi movement.

  • Working Paper November 2009 No
Working Paper November 2009 No. 154 Extending labour inspections to the informal sector and agriculture Priya Deshingkar What is Chronic Poverty? Overseas Development Institute The distinguishing feature 111 Westminster Bridge Road of chronic poverty is London SE1 7JD, UK extended duration in absolute poverty. Therefore, chronically poor people always, or usually, live below a poverty line, which is normally defined in terms of a money indicator (e.g. consumption, income, etc.), but could also be defined in terms of wider or subjective aspects of deprivation. This is different from the transitorily poor, who move in and out of poverty, or only occasionally fall below the poverty line. Chronic Poverty Research Centre www.chronicpoverty.org ISBN: 978-1-906433-56-7 Extending labour inspections to the informal sector and agriculture Abstract Labour inspections could, in theory, improve labour standards and help countries move towards decent work goals and the elimination of chronic poverty. But, in practice, inspections are either not conducted or do not result in penalties for those who break the law. Using the case of India, and examining labour contracts and standards in selected informal agricultural and non-agricultural occupations, the author identifies the reasons for this state of affairs: corrupt and under-resourced labour departments; subcontracting arrangements where employer–employee relationships are difficult to prove; little political commitment to improving labour standards; and poor coverage of new categories of work by existing labour laws. The paper also documents how, in the absence of an effective labour inspection machinery, civil society organisations and the media have successfully mobilised consumers and NGOs in the West to put pressure on suppliers in global value chains to improve labour standards and eliminate child labour.
