May Shubh Laabh and Shubh Yatra go together. Bon Voyage! 3 FOREWORD I am a firm believer in the social utility of enjoyable politico-economic journalism. Economists like Frederic Bastiat and Henry Hazlitt have set alight the minds of millions with the fire of freedom, not by writing dissertations, but by reaching out to lay people through jouernalism. These include dentists, engineers, architects and various other professionals who really need to know political economy in order to vote correctly, but have never had the opportunity to study it formally; or rather, in school, they have been MISTAUGHT! They are thus easily led astray by economic sophisms that justify protectionism and other damaging forms of state interference in economic life. It is for such people that I have penned this volume and I offer it to the general reading public so that they may not only enjoy the read but also appreciate the importance of Freedom: Freedom From The State. In this I have attempted to be extremely simple in my arguments – there are no ‘theories’ presented. There are also a series of travelogues which explain reality on the ground as we see it, and contrast East and West. -

In case of abuse or copyright appearing without permission e-mail [email protected] THE DIGITAL TURN IN INDIAN FILM SOUND: ONTOLOGIES AND AESTHETICS Indranil Bhattacharya A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of Westminster for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy March 2019 ii Abstract My project maps film sound practices in India against the backdrop of the digital turn. It is a critical-historical account of the transitional era, roughly from 1998 to 2018, and examines practices and decisions taken ‘on the ground’ by film sound recordists, editors, designers and mixers. My work explores the histories and genealogies of the transition by analysing the individual, as well as collective, aesthetic concerns of film workers migrating from the celluloid to the digital age. My inquiry aimed to explore linkages between the digital turn and shifts in production practices, notably sound recording, sound design and sound mixing. The study probes the various ways in which these shifts shaped the aesthetics, styles, genre conventions, and norms of image-sound relationships in Indian cinema in comparison with similar practices from Euro-American film industries. -

El marco teórico recoge conceptos sobre la mujer como género, la India, las mujeres de la India, la cinematografía hindi y sus personajes femeninos, y la realización audiovisual. Metodológicamente, se trabaja con análisis de contenido a las películas y a los personajes femeninos escogidos, análisis crítico del discurso y entrevistas a profundidad. Lo cual nos permite concluir lo siguiente, en estas películas se encuentran aspectos en los personajes femeninos que antes no eran mencionados y que rompen con la narrativa clásica de Bollywood: el uso del capital erótico, géneros audiovisuales que van más allá del romance y el enfrentamiento contra el sistema patriarcal que todavía existe en su sociedad. La estética visual de los personajes femeninos tiene una proyección más occidental, moderna o posmoderna, tanto en el vestuario, maquillaje, así como en los espacios y la atmósfera que se representa. Silk, Rani y Minal comparten los arquetipos clásicos de la heroína y la vampiresa de Bollywood, separados y opuestos inicialmente, para representar y crear una nueva Heroína, empoderada y activa, que lucha por sus propios objetivos. -
