10:00am – Introduction: A matter of two worldviews… The Sacramental-Liturgical versus the Contraceptive-Utilitarian Fr. Thomas J. Loya, STB, MA

10:30am – The Spectacular Story of the Genesis of Humanae Vitae – Dr. Janet Smith An explanation of the history of the ’s teaching on contraception, especially of the work of the Special Commission that advised Pope Paul VI to change the Church’s teaching, the shaky response of some ’ conferences, and the role that Karol Wojtyla played in the shaping of Humanae Vitae. We shall also review how successfully the American Church taught this teaching for the first half of the 20th century.

12:15pm – Why do so many Theologians dissent from Humanae Vitae? – Dr. Janet Smith A review of the Proportionalist dissent from Humane Vitae and various responses to Proportionalism. Reference will be made to Veritatis Splendor and its rejection of Proportionalism.

Speakers

Janet E. Smith holds the Father Michael J. McGivney Chair of Life Ethics at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit. She is the author of two books, Humanae Vitae: A Generation Later and of The Right to Privacy. She is the editor of Why Humanae Vitae Was Right: A Reader and co-author along with Prof. Chris Koczor of Life Issues, Medical Choices, Questions and Answers for Catholics. She has been published in several academic journals, has been a regular columnist for the National Catholic Register and blogs on CatholicVote.com. She is serving a third term as a consulter to the Pontifical Council on the Family and serves the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian unity as a member of the Anglican Roman Catholic International Commission, III and as representative to the Faith and Order Commission for the World.

She has received two honorary doctorates and several other awards for scholarship and service.

Dr. Smith has appeared on the Geraldo show, Fox Morning News, CNN International, CNN Newsroom, AlJazeera and has done many shows for various series on EWTN.

More than two million copies of her talk, “Contraception: Why Not” have been distributed.

Fr. Thomas J. Loya, STB, MA is currently the pastor of Annunciation of the Mother of God Byzantine Catholic Church in Homer Glen, IL.
