ESTABLISHING UNIVERSAL VALUES IN A RELATIVE WORLD Chapter 19 The Meaning of Sexuality The most important education is instruction in how to deal with sexual love. —Sun Myung Moon Of all the awesome powers of love, sexual love is perhaps the most formidable. It is inextricably intermingled not only with the impulse to bond for life but also the creation of life, and the passing down of genes and lineage. Indeed, sexuality itself taps into the deepest aspects of being human. It is a power as deep and elemental as the wind or the sea and just as impossible to tame or even fully comprehend. For this reason, educating for true love necessarily involves imparting insights about sexuality and coaching in direct- ing this marvelous force. Sex within its rightful place of marriage is an expression of deepest trust and affection, bonding the two partners together in deep communion and joy. Spouses’ physical communion is the origin of families that in turn are the schools for learning love and what it means to be human. Sex outside of marriage, however, is like a fire outside of its hearth, a threat to all concerned. As both a primal urge and one of the highest possible pleasures, unless well disciplined, it is uniquely prone to compulsiveness that overrides the conscience.1 For these reasons, religious traditions and societies throughout history have provided strong guidelines for sexual expression. Its importance cannot be overstated. “The moral man,” 369 FOUNDATIONS OF CHARACTER EDUCATION reads a Confucianist text, “finds the moral law beginning in the relation between man and woman” (Doctrine of the Mean 12).2 Yet keeping sexuality only in the service of true love repre- sents a formidable challenge. -

D’AVRAY Fellow of the British Academy Abstract: Papal law is known from the late 4th century (Siricius). There was demand for decretals and they were collected in private collections from the 5th century on. Charlemagne’s Admonitio generalis made papal legislation even better known and the Pseudo-Isidorian collections brought genuine decretals also to the wide audience that these partly forged collections reached. The papal reforms from the 11th century on gave rise to a new burst of papal decretals, and collections of them, culminating in the Liber Extra of 1234. The Council of Trent opened a new phase. The ‘Congregation of the Council’, set up to apply Trent’s non-dogmatic decrees, became a new source of papal law. Finally, in 1917, nearly a millennium and a half of papal law was codified by Cardinal Gasparri within two covers. Papal law was to a great extent ‘demand- driven’, which requires explanation. The theory proposed here is that Catholic Christianity was composed of a multitude of subsystems, not planned centrally and each with an evolving life of its own. Subsystems frequently interfered with the life of other subsystems, creating new entanglements. This constantly renewed complexity had the function (though not the purpose) of creating and recreating demand for papal law to sort out the entanglements between subsystems. For various reasons other religious systems have not generated the same demand: because the state plays a ‘papal’ role, or because the units are small, discrete and simple, or thanks to a clear simple blueprint, or because of conservatism combined with a tolerance of some inconsistency. -

ERTAINLY UNDER THE FRANCIS PAPACY our Roman teapot is filled to the brim with leaves clamoring to be read and deciphered—too many in fact for even a cursory overview. C Instead I would like to articulate one hypothesis and then probe it by looking at just a couple of the tea-leaves that have collected around contrasting views on the relationship of conscience and Church teaching. First the hypothesis: I believe that a helpful way to read the tea- leaves is by considering them in terms of a major cultural paradigm shift taking place in the Church.1 This shift began with the run-up to Vatican II and we’ve been witnessing something of a protracted tug- of-war ever since. Clearly in the Franciscan papacy the energy has again shifted and this in turn has occasioned a considerable amount of push-back from forces that once enjoyed great influence in the previ- ous two pontificates. One core tension revolves around various understandings of con- science, and especially in connection to its relationship to the Church’s magisterium. For example, in the Instrumentum laboris for the Octo- ber 2015 Synod, the paragraphs on conscience, especially no. 137, came in for considerable critical attention before the Synod opened. Evangelii Gaudium What is Pope Francis’ main message in Evangelii Gaudium? The principal theme involves the need for a joyful proclamation of the Gospel to the entire world. “…an Apostolic Exhortation written around the theme of Christian joy in order that the Church may rediscover the original source of evangelisation in the contemporary world” In Evangelii Gaudium Pope Francis’ expresses: Concern that the Church is becoming more judgmental than merciful. Conjugal love Christ Our Lord has abundantly blessed this love, which is rich in its various features, coming as it does from the spring of Divine Love and modeled on Christ's own union with the Church. ( GS , #48) Authentic married love is caught up into Divine love and is directed and enriched by the redemptive power of Christ and the salvific action of the Church, with the result that the spouses are effectively led to God and are helped and strengthened in their lofty role as mothers and fathers. ( GS , #48) This love is an eminently human one since it is directed from one person to another through an affection of the will; it involves the good of the whole person, and therefore can enrich the expressions of body and mind with a unique dignity, ennobling these expressions as special ingredients and signs of the friendship distinctive of marriage. This love God has judged worthy of special gifts, healing, perfecting and exalting gifts of grace and of charity. Such love, merging the human with the divine, leads the spouses to a free and mutual gift of themselves, a gift providing itself by gentle affection and by deed, such love pervades the whole of their lives: indeed by its busy generosity it grows better and grows greater. Therefore it far excels mere erotic inclination, which, selfishly pursued, soon enough fades wretchedly away. (GS, #49) Authentic conjugal love will be more highly prized, and wholesome public opinion created about it if Christian couples give outstanding witness to faithfulness and harmony in their love, and to their concern for educating their children also, if they do their part in bringing about the needed cultural, psychological and social renewal on behalf of marriage and the family. -

In Brief In June of 2015, Pope Francis released the first encyclical on ecology. The Pope’s message highlights “integral ecology,” intrinsically linking ecological integrity and social justice. While the encyclical notes the statements of prior Popes and Bishops on the environment, Pope Francis has departed from earlier biblical language describing the domination of nature. Instead, he expresses a broader understanding of the beauty and complexity of nature, on which humans fundamentally depend. With “integral ecology” he underscores this connection of humans to the natural environment. This perspective shifts the climate debate to one of a human change of consciousness and conscience. It has also stirred up factual crisis of moral theology. The crisis has caused subjectivity of morality and this has caused further crisis. The most serious feature of the crisis seems to be an effort to accept moral pluralism inside the Catholic Church. The renewal of moral theology the Second Vatican Council talked about has been left blocked. A couple of years after the Second Vatican Council, but before publishing Humanae Vitae, warning of St. Paul VI calls for continuity with moral tradition as a criterion for the autonomy of Catholic moral theology.
