Date 21/04/14 signature of candidate signature of supervisor Abstract This thesis is an ethnographic study of craftsmanship among the Lulesámi in Northern Norway. The study, which is based on an apprentice-style methodology, focuses in particular on the role and significance of making and wearing the gáppte, a characteristic Sámi dress. While the gáppte is often employed to visually define and distinguish the Sámi in relation to other people, my aim is to move beyond such a common interpretation and unfold the garment’s everyday aspects and explore how its production and use are interwoven with the Lulesámi’s emphasis and ongoing creation of personal and social well-being. The chapters address, in their different ways, the three main themes of this study. The first is concerned with the various ways in which the gáppte and its use affect people’s sense of self and relations to others, and the factors influencing such diverse experiences. The second theme focuses on how the learning to make the garment, rather than involving a fixed set of skills, is based on an ongoing practical and sensuous engagement with the world. I demonstrate that novices not only learn the technical skills of producing a garment to be worn, but that they are also encouraged to develop certain social skills and virtues for living a good life. The third theme is constituted by an examination of the productive activities within the domestic sphere, which often go unnoticed as they cannot easily be seen or measured through tangible evidence, but which affirm and strengthen the making of a convivial society. Through the analysis I draw and build on current anthropological debates on material culture by showing how craftsmanship is a self-transforming experience which encompasses a complete way of being, traversing and merging immaterial and material realms of life. I also wish to contribute to feminist debates by drawing attention to how the ‘personal’ and ‘domestic’ are intimately intertwined with larger historical, political and social processes. for my father, Lars Gustavsson (1941-2002), who with love and humbleness showed me how beautiful the world is. Ofoten har relativt få fergesamband sammenlignet med mange andre regioner i Nordland. Totalt finnes det 3 samband som berører regionen, mens f.eks. Helgeland har nærmere 20 samband. Staten har fortsatt ansvar for 4 såkalte Riksvei/Stamnettsamband i Nordland. Samtlige av sambandene som opererer i Ofoten er slike samband. Det fjerde «statlige» sambandet forbinder Bodø med Værøy, Røst og Moskenes. Das Matterhorn in den Alpen ist so ein Beispiel oder der Cerro Torre in Pa- tagonien. Uns Kletterern durchströmen im Anschluss allerdings weniger hehre Gedanken: Da müssen wir hoch! Genau dieses Gefühl hatte ich, als ich den Stetind das erste Mal erblickte: Was für ein unglaublicher Granitzahn ragte hier in Nordnorwegen, ca. 70 Kilometer südlich von Narvik aber bereits deutlich nördlich des Polarkreises, in den Himmel? So oder ähn- lich muss es auch Nils Faarlund gegangen sein, als er Mitte der 60er Jahre den Stetind sah, sich damals noch mit einem Fischerboot an seine Basis bringen ließ und anschließend den Berg über seinen Südpfeiler erstieg (der Normalweg wurde bereits 1911 entdeckt). Aber, typisch für einen Skandinavier, hing er die heute immerhin mit VI+ bzw. VII- bewertete Aktion nicht an die große Glocke, sondern machte genau das Gegenteil: Er und seine Seilpartner gründeten einen Klub mit dem vielsagenden Namen „Maul hal- ten“. Nichts von der einmaligen Schönheit des Berges bzw. seiner Kletterei sollte an die Öffentlichkeit gelangen, der Stetind sollte ein norwegisches Geheimnis bleiben. Viele Mitglieder scheint dieser Klub allerdings auch in Skandi- navien nie gehabt zu haben und spätestens zu Beginn dieses Jahr- tausends dürfte er sich aufgelöst haben: Denn 2002 wurde der Berg nach einer Umfrage zum norwegischen Na- tionalberg erklärt und im Anschluss druckte die norwegische Post sogar eine Briefmarke mit seinem Bild. Und da man die Basis des Berges mittlerweile sogar mit einem Stra- ßentunnel durchbohrt hat, entfällt auch jeglicher Stress hinsichtlich Anfahrt oder Zustieg: das Basislager entspricht einem mit Klohäuschen ausgestatteten Parkplatz und ist damit für alle erreichbar.

Abstract Towards an ecological consciousness A qualitative narrative of a research journey My overall aim with this Masters thesis is to create an understanding of the need for social change and inspire individuals and communities to think and live nature- friendly (Schostak & Schostak, 2008). This perspective has evolved from a qualitative case study of a specific approach to addressing the human-nature relationship. My case study is The Joy of Living Nature-friendly, an approach that came to be through The Stetind Project in Norway. “Central to this project is the belief that it is possible to change the ways in which we think and act, in particular by focusing on deep joy as an impetus for inspiration and change” (Council for Eco-philosophy, 2009, home page: project description). Through my research journey I have experienced a change in the way I think about the world around me and how I relate to it. Through this process I have developed my ecological self (Naess, 1989). I understand this, a development of an ecological consciousness, as the essence of what The Stetind Project is aiming for through the Joy of Living Nature-friendly. This Masters is a reflexive narrative that unfolds the process I have gone through to exemplify how the case study has functioned as my change agent (Dillow, 2009; Ellis & Bochner, 2000).

    Mo birget soađis (How to cope with war) – strategies of Sámi resilience during the German influence Adaptation and resistance in Sámi relations to Germans in wartime Sápmi, Norway and Finland 1940-1944 Abstract The article studies the Sámi experiences during the “German era” in Norway and Finland, 1940-44, before the Lapland War. The Germans ruled as occupiers in Norway, but had no jurisdiction over the civilians in Finland, their brothers-in-arms. In general, however, encounters between the local people and the Germans appear to have been cordial in both countries. Concerning the role of racial ideology, it seems that the Norwegian Nazis had more negative opinions of the Sámi than the occupiers, while in Finland the racial issues were not discussed. The German forces demonstrated respect for the reindeer herders as communicators of important knowledge concerning survival in the arctic. The herders also possessed valuable meat reserves. Contrary to this, other Sámi groups, such as the Sea Sámi in Norway, were ignored by the Germans resulting in a forceful exploitation of sea fishing. Through the North Sámi concept birget (coping with) we analyse how the Sámi both resisted and adapted to the situation. The cross-border area of Norway and Sweden is described in the article as an exceptional arena for transnational reindeer herding, but also for the resistance movement between an occupied and a neutral state.     Samer i to norske nyhetsmedier En undersøkelse av saker med samisk hovedfokus i Nordlys og Dagsrevyen i perioden 1970–2000 Arne Johansen Ijäs Forord Slutten av 1900-tallet var en særdeles begivenhetsrik tid i samisk historie i Norge. Forsøkene på å knekke den samiske kulturen led sitt endelige nederlag, og i stedet vokste det fram en moderne samisk nasjon. Begivenhetene og prosessene som førte fram til denne utviklingen har etter hvert blitt gjenstand for oppmerksomheten til flere forskere, særlig ved Universitetet i Tromsø. Historikere, arkeologer, antropologer, samfunnsvi- tere, jurister og språkforskere har studert og søkt å forklare det som har skjedd både ved hjelp av studier i fortiden og nåtiden. Nyhetsmedier har de siste 30–40 år fått en stadig breiere plass i samfunnet, og i forbindelse med samenes kamp for sin nasjon har de utvilsomt spilt en viktig rolle både som bremsekloss og pådriver i proses- sen. De nasjonale medienes plass i samisk historie mot slutten av forrige hundreår har ikke vært gjenstand for omfattende studier til nå, og denne framstillingen er et lite bidrag til å se hendelsene fra et medieperspektiv. Framstillingen vil kunne brukes av studenter og forskere i mediefag og historie som ønsker å se på minoritetenes situasjon i majoritetssamfunnet. Jeg vil takke Norges Forskningsråd som gav meg et 3-årig stipend til å forske på disse spørsmål. Jeg vil også takke ledelsen ved Samisk høgskole, som helt siden jeg ble ansatt ved skolen i 2004, har gitt meg anledning til å arbeide med prosjektet.
