GARDEN SPOT VILLAGE INVITES PUBLIC TO VIEW “THE KARATE KID”
Free drive-in movie scheduled for Fri., July 22
NEW HOLLAND, Pa. — June 28, 2011 — Garden Spot Village invites the public to a free drive-in movie night featuring The Karate Kid on Fri., July 22. The screening will take place under the stars on the campus at 433 S. Kinzer Ave.
“We had a great turn-out for our first drive-in movie night in June,” said Colleen Musselman, director of life enrichment at Garden Spot Village. “We had families from as far away as Manheim, Morgantown and beyond. Some people came early and played lawn games while they enjoyed refreshments from the concession stands. We played music before the movie started, and some of the children danced while others caught fireflies.”
The Karate Kid stars Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith, son of actor Will Smith, in roles originated by Pat Morita and Ralph Macchio. In this update of the 1984 original, 12-year-old Dre (Jaden Smith) has difficulty adjusting when he and his mother move from Detroit to Beijing. That is, until Dre meets Mr. Han, who teaches him kung fu—along with important lessons about maturity.
Like the other family-friendly movies in the summer drive-in series at Garden Spot Village, The Karate Kid is a Dove ‘Family-Approved’ selection. The Dove Foundation reviews movies based on traditional Judeo-Christian values and posts them online at www.dove.org.
In addition to Despicable Me on June 24, Garden Spot Village plans to show The Karate Kid on July 22 and Gulliver’s Travels on Aug. 26.
Movies run on a 40-foot-high screen sponsored by Turkey Hill. Moviegoers are welcome to stay in their cars and tune in to the soundtrack via their car radio or bring blankets and lawn chairs and listen to the outdoor sound system. More than 2 acres of lawn seating are available, but parking will be limited to 80 cars.
Popcorn, candy, hot dogs, beverages and other refreshments will be sold when the gate opens at 7 p.m. The movie begins at dusk. There is no charge for admission. Donations to the Garden Spot Village Benevolent Fund will be accepted at the gate.
