Existen evidencias cartográficas de los siglos XVII y XVIII que muestran una pequeña punta con el topónimo de Punta del Palmar. También muestran la desembocadura del río de La Barranca en una ubicación distinta a la actual. Recientes estudios geológicos concluyen que la variación en el curso bajo del río Barranca es un factor en la formación de la barra de arena. Ello confirma la información presente en los derroteros del periodo. COLONIAL CARTOGRAPHIC EVIDENCE OF THE GEOLOGICAL FORMATION OF PUNTA ARENAS (COSTA RICA, 1595-1838) Abstract The geographical feature that is Punta Arenas was formed by siltation in the last five centuries. There is cartographic evidence from the 17th and 18th centuries that shows a small point with the toponym of Palmer Point. It also shows the mouth of La Barranca river in a different location than the current one. Recent geological studies conclude that the variation in the lower course of this river is a factor in the formation of the sand bar. Navigating the Atlantic World: Piracy, Illicit Trade, and the Construction of Commercial Networks, 1650-1791 Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University by Jamie LeAnne Goodall, M.A. Graduate Program in History The Ohio State University 2016 Dissertation Committee: Margaret Newell, Advisor John Brooke David Staley Copyright by Jamie LeAnne Goodall 2016 Abstract This dissertation seeks to move pirates and their economic relationships from the social and legal margins of the Atlantic world to the center of it and integrate them into the broader history of early modern colonization and commerce. In doing so, I examine piracy and illicit activities such as smuggling and shipwrecking through a new lens. They act as a form of economic engagement that could not only be used by empires and colonies as tools of competitive international trade, but also as activities that served to fuel the developing Caribbean-Atlantic economy, in many ways allowing the plantation economy of several Caribbean-Atlantic islands to flourish. Ultimately, in places like Jamaica and Barbados, the success of the plantation economy would eventually displace the opportunistic market of piracy and related activities. Plantations rarely eradicated these economies of opportunity, though, as these islands still served as important commercial hubs: ports loaded, unloaded, and repaired ships, taverns attracted a variety of visitors, and shipwrecking became a regulated form of employment. In places like Tortuga and the Bahamas where agricultural production was not as successful, illicit activities managed to maintain a foothold much longer. -

O’Malley DOI:10.5149/northcarolina/9781469615349.003.0003 Abstract and Keywords This chapter examines how piracy and privateering contributed to the slave trade in English, Dutch, and French America between 1619 and 1720. It shows that even before England possessed colonies from which to exploit slaves, pirates and privateers were already seizing Africans from the Spanish and Portuguese. The captives were enslaved in Africa for sale to Atlantic traders and then seized in American waters by pirates for delivery to a range of colonies. As a result, many Africans arriving in the Americas found themselves the subject of illicit trade. The chapter discusses the implications of these black- and gray-market trades—piracy, privateering, interloping—for the development of slavery and the slave trade in British America. Dampier was the first Englishman to explore parts of Australia and the first person to circumnavigate the world three times. He has also been described as Australia's first natural historian, as well as one of the most important British explorers of the period between Sir Walter Raleigh and James Cook. In 1679, Dampier joined buccaneer Captain Bartholomew Sharp on the Spanish Main of Central America, twice visiting the Bay of Campeche on the north coast of Mexico. This led to his first circumnavigation, during which he accompanied a raid across the Isthmus of Darién in Panama and captured Spanish ships on the Pacific coast of that isthmus. The pirates then raided Spanish settlements in Peru before returning to the Caribbean. Dampier made his way to Virginia, where in 1683 he was engaged by the privateer John Cooke. Cooke entered the Pacific via Cape Horn and spent a year raiding Spanish possessions in Peru, the Galápagos Islands and Mexico. This expedition collected buccaneers and ships as it went along, at one time having a fleet of ten vessels. Cooke died in Mexico and a new leader, Edward Davis, was elected captain by the crew. -

Introduction L’âge d’or des corsaires néerlandais dans la mer des Antilles dura environ un quart de siècle (1622-1648). À chaque année, au cours de cette période, en flottes plus ou moins imposantes, armées par la Westindische Compagnie, ils appareillaient des ports de Hollande et de Zélande à destination de l’Amérique pour y piller l’ennemi espagnol.1 La paix venue, cette expérience américaine des Néerlandais fut mise à profit par les jeunes colonies antillaises de la France et de l’Angleterre. En effet, pour ces deux autres rivales de l’Espagne, le vieil adage «Pas de paix au-delà de la Ligne» demeura plus longtemps en usage.2 Ainsi, dès les années 1650, plusieurs de ces marins des Provinces Unies des Pays-Bas continuèrent leur lutte contre les Espagnols à bord de corsaires battant pavillons anglais et français. Certains devinrent ensuite capitaines dans les deux principaux centres de flibuste qu’étaient la colonie britannique de la Jamaïque et sa voisine française de l’île de la Tortue et côte de Saint-Domingue (aujourd’hui Haïti).3 Les origines précises de ces hommes, ainsi que les circonstances dans lesquelles ils obtinrent leurs commandements, échappent souvent à la recherche. Cependant, pour quelques uns d’entre eux, les informations, glanées ici et là, permettent de reconstituer assez fidèlement leur carrière au service de l’étranger. Entrepreneurship and the Transformation of Virginia, 1688-1750 (2018)
MICHIE, IAN M., Ph.D. Agents of Empire: Entrepreneurship and the Transformation of Virginia, 1688-1750 (2018). Directed by Dr. Phyllis Whitman Hunter. 312 pages. This study examines the economic culture of Virginia from the end of the seventeenth century to the middle of the eighteenth. The study employs five individuals who operated in an entrepreneurial capacity as case studies to reveal the complexity of the business climate in Virginia. Using these individuals as examples I argue that an entrepreneurial mindset influenced the growth of transatlantic commerce in Virginia. At the same time entrepreneurial activity aided in the solidification of anglicized institutions in the colonies, allowing for deepening assertions of empire in the Chesapeake and backcountry regions. However, the transition was never an organized progression but, rather, a complicated web of endeavors relying on legitimate and illegitimate business networks and practices. The case studies represented in this work demonstrate the types of business activities undertaken by settlers and planters as they tested the exploitable resources and the imperial authority of the colony. It also focuses on a place and time where the growth of plantation slavery influenced motivations and actions of colonists. The work adds to previous histories of Virginia, Atlantic, and economic history by offering analysis of the social environment and cultural motivations of the period though the examination of business-motivated individuals. These individuals were integral parts of a larger culture of empire that asserted its power into North America in the eighteenth century.
