Overview

So far in 2017, a total of 27,354 refugees and migrants arrived in by sea. The majority are from Syria (42%), 27,354 Iraq (19%) and Afghanistan (11%). The majority of new arrivals in 2017 are from Syria (11,552), Iraq (5,328) and Afghanistan (3,136), thus following the trend of arrivals of the last two years. Typically, these three nationalities arrive in family groups.

Entry points Men Women Boys Girls In 2017, similar to 2016, the majority of asylum-seekers and migrants in Greece arrive on Lesvos (11,570), Chios (6,294) and Samos (4,840). Dodecanese islands mainly receive family groups from Syria and Iraq. In November, asylum-seekers and migrants arrived on 7 islands. Lesvos receives the highest numbers of people from Syria and Afghanistan over the overall number of sea arrivals in Greece in 2017.
