I cherish deeply the discussions with Pamela Pattynama on issues of gender, ethnicity, race, “Indo-ness”, belonging, and the idea of authenticity that have gone beyond the scope of this project and into my new research interest in transnational adoption. And she dreams of becoming Indonesia's first Miss Universe. There is only one thing holding her back _ a swimsuit. Like most international beauty competitions, Miss Universe requires participants to appear in a swimsuit _ either a one-piece model or a bikini. But here in the world's most populous Muslim nation, the 24-year-old Miss Indonesia faces condemnation from religious leaders and government officials who say women in swimsuits violate religious tenets requiring them to dress modestly. "Every country can join the competition, so why not Indonesia?" asks Artika, who won the Miss Indonesia pageant in August, an event that does not require contestants to parade in swimwear. "I don't see a problem with the swimsuit. It's only to show my proportions. ... So many Muslims wear swimsuits. I wear one swimming," she says. Battles over bathing suits would seem out of place in Indonesia, where newsstands are filled with magazines featuring scantily clad models and miniskirts. Prostitution rings operate openly in all major cities. But Islamic conservatives _ some of whom want to replace Indonesia's secular system with one bound by Islamic law _ have been emboldened since the fall of ex-dictator Suharto in 1998. Under pressure from fundamentalists, the male-dominated parliament is debating a law that would make kissing in public and erotic dancing punishable by jail time.

Sie hatte schon vorher Freude an kreativen Praktiken gehabt (wie Weben und Stricken). In ihrer neuen Aktivität fand sie etwas befriedigendes, was sie sehr er- füllt. Ihre ersten Stickereien waren Buchstaben, vor allem aus dem Sajou-Alphabet. Als ich die sah, kam mir eine Idee. Gemeinsam dachten wir über eine fruchtbare Zusammen- arbeit nach, die unsere beiden jeweiligen Hobbys vereinen könnte. Was wäre, wenn sie meine eigenen Schriften stickte? Um diese Idee umzusetzen, entwickelte ich für meine Schrift Arthemys Display Light eine neue Version, die es meiner Mutter ermöglichte, die Formen auf ein spezielles Gewebe (namens Aïda) zu übertragen. Dieser Prozess erfordert eine binäre Sprache, genau wie Pixel auf einem Computer. Die Buchstaben werden also Punkt für Punkt gedacht und akribisch zusammengesetzt. Das geht weg von dem Ge- danken einer vektorisierten Form, die nur durch ihre Umrisse definiert wird. Vielmehr muss die Form in ihrer gesamten Fläche aufgebaut werden, wie mit Legosteinen! Auf dieser Grundlage konnte meine Mutter die verschiedenen Buch- staben bauen, indem sie einfach dem Raster des Gewebes folgte. Sicherlich war dieser Prozess ziemlich aufwendig und verlangte eine Menge Geduld ab, aber meine Mutter

Between Muslim Discourse and Women’s Lived Experiences Nina Nurmila Dra (Bandung, Indonesia), Grad.Dip.Arts (Murdoch University, Western Australia), MA (Murdoch University) Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy February 2007 Gender Studies - Faculty of Arts The University of Melbourne ABSTRACT Unlike most of the literature on polygamy, which mainly uses theological and normative approaches, this thesis is a work of social research which explores both Indonesian Muslim discourses on polygamy and women’s lived experiences in polygamous marriages in the post-Soeharto period (after 1998). The thesis discusses the interpretations of the Qur’anic verses which became the root of Muslim controversies over polygamy. Indonesian Muslim interpretations of polygamy can be divided into three groups based on Saeed’s categorisation of the Muslim approaches to the Qur’an (2006b: 3). First, the group he refers to as the ‘Textualists’ believe that polygamy is permitted in Islam, and regard it as a male right. Second, the group he refers to as ‘Semi-textualists’ believe that Islam discourages polygamy and prefers monogamy; therefore, polygamy can only be permitted under certain circumstances such as when a wife is barren, sick and unable to fulfil her duties, including ‘serving’ her husband’s needs. Third, the group he calls ‘Contextualists’ believe that Islam implicitly prohibits polygamy because just treatment of more than one woman, the main requirement for polygamy, is impossible to achieve. This thesis argues that since the early twentieth century it was widely admitted that polygamy had caused social problems involving neglect of wives and their children.

The findings of this research are based on the interactions and activities of women and men on the polygamy website. The research addressed the following questions: 1) what are individuals using the website for? 2) What are website members communicating about? 3) How are individuals using the website to search for polygamous relationships? 4) Are website members forming connections and meeting people offline through the use of the website? 5) Do members of the website perceive the Internet to be affecting the contemporary practice of polygamy in the U.S.? This research focused more on the desire to create a polygamous relationship rather than established polygamous marriages and kinship networks. This study found that since the naturalization of monogamous heterosexual marriage and the nuclear family has occurred in the U.S., due to a number of historical, social, cultural, political, and economic factors, the Internet can provide a means to denaturalize these concepts and provide a space for the expression and support of counter discourses of marriage, like polygamy.

    BAB I PENDAHULUAN 1.1 Latar Belakang Popularitas kontes kecantikan yang diawali di Eropa telah merambah ke banyak negara termasuk Indonesia. Sejumlah kontes kecantikan meramaikan industri pertelevisian, salah satunya adalah kontes kecantikan Puteri Indonesia yang sudah diselenggarakan sejak tahun 1992. Ajang Puteri Indonesia digagas oleh pendiri PT Mustika Ratu, yaitu Mooryati Soedibyo. Di tahun 2020, kompetisi Puteri Indonesia kembali digelar dan ditayangkan di stasiun televisi SCTV. Penyelenggaraan kontes, melibatkan 39 finalis yang berlomba menampilkan performa terbaik untuk memperebutkan gelar dan mahkota Puteri Indonesia. Pemilihan 39 finalis yang berkompetisi di panggung Puteri Indonesia melalui proses yang tidak mudah. Yayasan Puteri Indonesia (YPI) menjelaskan bahwa perempuan yang berhasil menjadi perwakilan provinsi dipilih melalui seleksi ketat. YPI membebankan syarat utama bagi calon peserta untuk memenuhi kriteria “Brain, Beauty, Behavior”. Secara spesifik YPI mematok kontestan harus memiliki tinggi minimal 170 cm, berpenampilan menarik, dan pernah atau sedang menempuh pendidikan di perguruan tinggi. Nantinya, apabila berhasil terpilih sebagai pemenang, maka 3 besar Puteri Indonesia akan mengikuti ajang kecantikan internasional yaitu, 1 2 Miss Universe, Miss International, dan Miss Supranational (www.puteri- indonesia.com, 2019). Konstruksi ideal “Brain, Beauty, Behavior” atau 3B telah melekat dengan kontes Puteri Indonesia, dan menjadi harapan bagi masyarakat untuk melihat figur perempuan ideal. Namun, penyelenggaraan kontes di tahun 2020 mendapat sorotan terkait dengan performa finalis saat malam final. Salah satu finalis yang menjadi perbincangan hangat adalah Kalista Iskandar, perwakilan dari Provinsi Sumatera Barat. Langkahnya terhenti di babak 6 besar setelah gagal menjawab pertanyaan terkait Pancasila. Kegagalannya dalam sesi tanya-jawab, menghiasi pemberitaan media massa hingga menjadi topik yang paling banyak dibicarakan (trending topic) di media sosial Twitter.
