Jill Purce The Mystic Spiral INTRODUCTION Spirals have been found in the form of pictographs or petroglyphs in most countries and cultures throughout the world. A simple design, it’s possibly the most common rock art motif in Colombia, appearing more times in the form of a petroglyph than a pictograph. Colombian petroglyph spirals tend to be curvilinear while pictograph spirals are generally angular and painted in red, however there are many exceptions (Marriner 2002:5). Easy to engrave or paint, they may have been used for both exoteric (for the general public) and esoteric (only for the initiated) purposes in pre-historic Colombian rock art. Identification of the Colombian rock artist and the interpretation of rock art motifs has been the theme of much controversy during the past decade. The computer age and the internet have enabled researchers to disseminate their studies and documentation of rock art sites to a wider audience of interested persons. This has created a much larger and easier-to-access data base of rock art investigations than has been previously possible. As a result, it’s now apparent that more rock art specialists accept the idea that shamans, the religious leaders of most hunter-gatherer societies, were responsible for making most rock art either directly or indirectly. This study examines spirals and their identified uses in different cultures.

Scientists, writers, and artists Colombia; were invited to make part of the project led by the Italian military, Chorographic Commission; geographer and cartographer- Agustin Codazzi. After nine years and landscape survey; three different artists, the Commission had many watercolor drawings Romanticism; that portrayed a landscape, not only in its physical traits, but also in its Watercolors; social, economic and agricultural development. Through the lens of building of the modern nation. these artists, the drawings that concluded the survey showed a landscape that was truly original but that was also seen through the lens of a certain romantic eye inherited by a firm European legacy. As a result, these watercolors show the different regions, people, and means of transportation, crops and trades. The Colombian Chorographic Commission was an important project in the construction of the Colombian modern nation, a country that was constantly divided by federalist and centralist politics, liberal and conservative parties. An interesting union between science, politics and art, these drawings represent the process of the modernization of nineteenth-century Colombia. I. Introduction During the course of Colombian nineteenth-century history, three historical journeys were essential to the construction of this nation and its identity: The Botanical Expedition, Alexander von Humboldt’s South American journey, and the Chorographic Commission.     ESRS Ituango Hydroelectric Project 1. General Information on the Scope of the IIC's Environmental and Social Review Summary Empresas Públicas de Medellín E.S.P. (Public Enterprises of Medellin, hereafter "EPM" or the "Company") is classified under Colombian law as a public industrial and commercial company that provides water and sanitation utilities; provides a natural gas network; and generates, transmits, distributes and sells energy. In the hydropower sector, EPM is a previous customer of the Inter-American Development Bank Group (IDBG), with whom a relationship has been maintained since 1993 when operation CO0221 was approved to partially finance the PORCE II Hydroelectric Project. Subsequently, in 2005, operation CO-L1005 was approved to partially finance the PORCE III project. EPM, jointly with the Department of Antioquia, is developing the Ituango Hydroelectric Project (hereafter "Ituango", "IHP" or "the Project"), which is located in the northwest of the Department of Antioquia on the Cauca River, approximately 170 km from the city of Medellín. The Project will have an installed capacity of 2,400 MW, which will allow it to generate approximately 14,040 GWh per year. The Project's first phase, which includes the enabling of four turbines (to reach a capacity of 1,200 MW), is scheduled to be finalized in 2019. The second phase includes bringing the four remaining turbines into operation (to reach 2,400 MW), and will be finalized in 2022. EPM holds the concession for construction of the Project and to operate it for 50 years. I analyze practices of cultural consumption involving records in Medell¶³n,Colombia's second largest city and most important industrial center at the time. The study sheds light on some of the complex connections between two simultaneous historical processes during the mid-twentieth century, mass consumption and socio-political strife. Between 1930 and 1953, Colombian society experienced the rise of mass media and mass consumption as well as the outbreak of La Violencia, a turbulent period of social and political strife. Through an analysis of written material, especially the popular press, this work illustrates the use of aesthetic judgments to establish social di®erences in terms of ethnicity, social class, and gender. Another important aspect of the dissertation focuses on the adoption of music gen- res by di®erent groups, not only to demarcate di®erences at the local level, but as a means to inscribe these groups within larger imagined communities.

Individuals of the new species are readily separated in the field or the museum from those of any other wren species, including its closest relatives T. rufalbus and T. nicefori, by a combination of traits including, but not limited to, plumage coloration of the upperparts, the pattern of barring on the wings and tail, overall smaller body size, a richer repertoire of syllable types, shorter trills, and distinctive terminal syllables. The new species is allopatrically distributed in relation to its congeners, being restricted to the dry Cauca River Canyon, a narrow inter-Andean valley enclosed by the Nechí Refuge rainforests and the northern sectors of the Western and Central Andes of Colombia. Individuals or pairs have been found only in remnant patches of dry forest and scrub at 250– 850 m elevation.
