The school has approximately 150 pupils.

On 22 November 2007 four staff members of the Veterinary Science Librarian paid a visit to this school. TWO NEW LIBRARY STAFF MEMBERS Several donations, such as story books, colouring books, crayons, modelling clay, pencils and other Antoinette Lourens stationery, as well as toothbrushes, dental floss and toothpaste were distributed to the children. I am sure all of you have noticed two young and lovely new faces in the library. They belong to Aileen This donation was received from the following donors in Vermont, USA: Rosemary Pypers and Kate Tamsin Moseley, our new after-hours staff .  Russell Memorial Library, Monkton;  Lawrence Memorial Library, Bristol; We asked them some questions to learn a bit more about them.  Margaret Pierce Teitelbaum (dental supplies);  Marv Greenberg, D.V.M.; Q: When is your birthday? (Year of birth will not be mentioned!!)  Laura Lyndes, D.V.M. and Aileen: 4 February  Julie Moenter, D.V.M. (organiser) Kate: 10 November . Q: Where is your home town ? Aileen: Cape Town Kate: Stutterheim

Tertia Coetsee, Marguerite Nel, Maite Q: Do you have pets? Motshoeneng, Constance Lekhuleng and Aileen: Yes of course! I have a cat (Tamara), a guinea pig (Onyx) and a corn snake (Hera) Johannes Moropotli Kate: I have a guinea pig, horse and dog

Q: Tell me more about your likes and dislikes. Kate: I like happy, positive people, reading, listening to music, doing outdoor activities and travelling, earning money. And your dislikes? Pessimistic and/or selfish people, being freezing cold with no way to warm up, pawpaw, mango, bananas and smokers. Aileen likes horse-riding, teaching Latin American and Ballroom dancing, learning the Argentine Tango, watching WAY too many series, reading and of course working in the library. Posters were made to accompany the dental donation, explaining the correct use of each item. And her dislikes are smokers, drivers that don't keep a reasonable following distance, olives, bigots The Veterinary Science Library also donated duplicate journals such as Talk and Farmer’s Weekly to use in the classes. There you have it. Two very smart ladies to help us in the library. Aren’t we lucky!

Not only did the children and their teachers enjoy the visit, but it was such an enriching experience for the librarians, they decided to surprise the children the following week with ice cream and sweets!

WHAT IS WEB 2.0 ? Antoinette Lourens

"Web 2.0" recently became a buzz word in the computer environment. The phrase "Web 2.0" hints at an improved form of the World Wide Web but it does not refer to an update to any technical specifications. Erica van der Westhuizen, It rather refers to changes in the ways software developers and end-users use the Web. Marguerite Nel, Johannes Moropotli, Web 1.0 was static with read-only websites, whose content could only be modified by the site's owner. Antoinette Lourens, Barbara Visitors could only view but not touch it. Web 2.0 includes a social element where users generate and Kellermann, Tertia Coetsee. distribute content, often with freedom to share and re-use. Web 2.0 is  a trend in the use of World Wide Web technology  web design that aims to facilitate creativity  information sharing  collaboration among users. These concepts led to the development and evolution of web-based communities and hosted services, such as social-networking sites (facebook etc.) , wikis, blogs, and folksonomies.

The Veterinary Science Library has already implemented some of these Web 2.0 tools and the staff are using them with great enthusiasm.

Blogs (weblogs) created and used are: Informal talks by present and past UP staff members were held during the lunch hours.
