We investigated the effect of trans-2-hexenal in alleviating heat stress on tomato seedlings in trials conducted from November 28, 2016 to January 4, 2017 at the Tokyo University of Agriculture, Japan. Wilting in seedlings was alleviated through exposure to 0.001 or 0.010 ppm trans- 2-hexenal, compared to untreated seedlings at 48°C. On the other hand, seedlings treated with 1.000 or 10.000 ppm trans-2-hexenal showed severe wilting. Electrolyte leakage and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels of heat-treated tomato leaves also showed alleviation from heat stress upon exposure to 0.001 ppm or 0.010 ppm trans-2-hexenal vapor. Results suggest that pre-treatment of tomato seedlings with trans-2-hexenal protected tomato seedlings from stress due to heat shock, indicating a possible practical application in tropical developing countries, as a cheap, energy-saving and environment friendly technique. Key words: green leaf volatiles (GLVs), heat stress alleviation, natural compound INTRODUCTION Tomato, considered as one of the most important vegetables in the world, is conserved daily as a source of nutrients, like sugars, organic and amino acids, polyphenols, folic acid, lycopene (carotenoid), vitamin C, as well as minerals (Toor et al. 2005, Vinson et al. 2001 Giovanelli et al. 1999, Van Duyn and Pivonka, 2000). World tomato production has reached up to 170 million tons (FAOSTAT, 2014). In developing countries, there is positive correlation between vegetable consumption and price, and a negative correlation between vegetable price and morbidity rate (Bouis 1991). Accordingly, an insufficient vegetable supply might affect negatively human health, leading to increased infant mortality and abortion rate (Bouis 1991). In many Southeast Asian countries, productivity of main crops has increased recently in a drastic manner, shifting the focus of food problems from quantity to quality, such as the intake of micronutrients to promote health (Imai 1998). Thus, fresh vegetables, including tomato, attract much attention and a year round stable supply is desirable. In addition, a low cost and simple technique for tomato production under high temperature is particularly required. High temperature is one of the serious causes for decreased productivity of a variety of crops (Boyer 1982, Hall and Anthony 2001). To counteract the effects of increased temperature, agricultural equipment, such as air control facilities, are used. However, these require high investments for their introduction, and/or running costs (Hara 2016). Thus, there is a need for a simple and low-cost technology to alleviate the effects of stress due to high temperature. 1 Effect of trans-2-hexenal vapor pretreatment….. Recently, carbonyl compounds derived from peroxidized linolenic acid are recognized as important signals involved in the environmental stress response (Yamauchi et al. 2008, Mueller and Berger 2009). There is therefore a need for new agricultural technologies which could alleviate the environmental stress caused by such chemicals. Hilu3 Abstract Background: The plastid maturase MatK has been implicated as a possible model for the evolutionary “missing link” between prokaryotic and eukaryotic splicing machinery. This evolutionary implication has sparked investigations concerning the function of this unusual maturase. Intron targets of MatK activity suggest that this is an essential enzyme for plastid function. The matK gene, however, is described as a pseudogene in many photosynthetic orchid species due to presence of premature stop codons in translations, and its high rate of nucleotide and amino acid substitution. Results: Sequence analysis of the matK gene from orchids identified an out-of-frame alternative AUG initiation codon upstream from the consensus initiation codon used for translation in other angiosperms. We demonstrate translation from the alternative initiation codon generates a conserved MatK reading frame. We confirm that MatK protein is expressed and functions in sample orchids currently described as having a matK pseudogene using immunodetection and reverse-transcription methods. We demonstrate using phylogenetic analysis that this alternative initiation codon emerged de novo within the Orchidaceae, with several reversal events at the basal lineage and deep in orchid history. Conclusion: These findings suggest a novel evolutionary shift for expression of matK in the Orchidaceae and support the function of MatK as a group II intron maturase in the plastid genome of land plants including the orchids.

The agreed major aims were to provide an overview of current modelling approaches and their strengths and weaknesses for risk assessment, and to develop and test a system for risk assessors to select appropriate models for application. First, we conducted an extensive literature review, based on protocols developed for systematic reviews. The review located 468 models for plant pest spread and dispersal and these were entered into a searchable and secure Electronic Model Inventory database. A cluster analysis on how these models were formulated allowed us to identify eight distinct major modelling strategies that were differentiated by the types of pests they were used for and the ways in which they were parameterised and analysed. These strategies varied in their strengths and weaknesses, meaning that no single approach was the most useful for all elements of risk assessment. Therefore we developed a Decision Support Scheme (DSS) to guide model selection. The DSS identifies the most appropriate strategies by weighing up the goals of risk assessment and constraints imposed by lack of data or expertise. Searching and filtering the Electronic Model Inventory then allows the assessor to locate specific models within those strategies that can be applied.

McPheron Department of Entomology, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA 16802, USA Received 29 March 2005; revised 3 October 2005; accepted 5 October 2005 Abstract The Afrotropical fruit Xy genus Ceratitis MacLeay is an economically important group that comprises over 89 species, subdivided into six subgenera. Cladistic analyses of morphological and host use characters have produced several phylogenetic hypotheses for the genus. Only monophyly of the subgenera Pardalaspis and Ceratitis (sensu stricto) and polyphyly of the subgenus Ceratalaspis are common to all of these phylogenies. In this study, the hypotheses developed from morphological and host use characters are tested using gene trees pro- duced from DNA sequence data of two mitochondrial genes (cytochrome oxidase I and NADH-dehydrogenase subunit 6) and a nuclear gene (period). Comparison of gene trees indicates the following relationships: the subgenus Pardalaspis is monophyletic, subsection A of the subgenus Pterandrus is monophyletic, the subgenus Pterandrus may be either paraphyletic or polyphyletic, the subgenus Ceratalaspis is polyphyletic, and the subgenus Ceratitis s. s. might not be monophyletic. In addition, the genera Ceratitis and Trirhithrum do not form reciprocally monophyletic clades in the gene trees. Although the data statistically reject monophyly for Trirhithrum under the Shimoda- ira–Hasegawa test, they do not reject monophyly of Ceratitis. 2005 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. Box 1628, Forks, WA 98331; [email protected] 2 Department of Evolotion and Ecology, University of California, Davis, CA 95616 Biological control using introduced natural enemies can be an effective approach to the long term control of widespread weeds. A biological control program against Spartina spp. is underway in Washington State, where more than 10,000 hectares (ha) of intertidal mudflat are affected by Spartina alterniflora and Spartina anglica. Releases of the planthopper Prokelisia marginata have been made into Willapa Bay each year since 2000 and into Puget Sound since 2003. Prior to introducing this insect, rigorous host specificity testing and a review by the Technical Advisory Group on Biological Control of Weeds confirmed that the risk to non-target plants was minute. Populations of the biocontrol agent were initially slow to establish and grow. However, early problems with high winter mortality have been remedied through a combination of improved release site selection and the use of cold-hardy east coast biotypes. At least two populations in Willapa Bay are well established and expanding. At a localized scale, we have measured 50 percent reductions of Spartina biomass and 90 percent reduction in viable seed set due to P. marginata. The full extent of the impact will only be known with time. While the use of biological control in California may pose a risk to the closely related native Spartina foliosa, it would be an excellent option in other other parts of the world where Spartina has invaded and where there are no closely related native Spartina species.

    Insect Classification Spring 2003 Amanda Bisson, Sarah Clark, Matt Lehnert, and Rick Stein Key to TINGIDAE of Florida Lace Bugs Tingidae is a rather large family in the order Heteroptera containing approximately 250 genera and 2000 species worldwide. All are phytophagous (feeding on plants) and are host specific. In fact, despite the detailed key provided here, one of the most important pieces of information necessary for tingid identification is the name of the host plant. Thirty-nine species have been reported in Florida; however, only seven of those are commonly encountered. The most common species that occur in Florida include the azalea lace bug (Stephanitis pyrioides), the hawthorn lace bug (Corythucha cydoniae), the lantana lace bug (Teleonemia scrupulosa) and the sycamore lace bug (Corythucha ciliata). Other important species include the avocado lace bug (Pseudacysta perseae), the fringetree lace bug (Leptoypha mutica), and the oak lace bug (Corythucha floridana). Physical identification of tingids is done primarily through examination of the head, pronotum and hemelytra. Adult lace bugs get their name from the lace-like appearance of their dorsum. This is created by a reticulate network of ridges on the pronotum and hemelytra that divides the area into a series of cells of variable size and shape. Many tingids also bear a strongly developed bucculae. These are ventral flanges on either side of the head that border the rostrum. Other common characteristics of tingids include two-segmented tarsi and the absence of ocelli. Their antennae are four-segmented, with segments I and II short and thick and segment III usually much longer and more slender.
