It is probably the hardest article I have had to write. As my last Messenger article, it is one piece in the process of saying goodbye as my family and I prepare to move to Washington, DC. This process is being made even harder by the situation in which we find ourselves. Not being able to meet together in person is promoting the necessity to change our expectations and ways of doing things. Perhaps this is a fitting message for this final article. Things are going to be different. Things are going to be different for me, and they’re going to be different for you. -

Collaborating and Conflicted- Being Jewish in Secular and Multicultural
Collaborating and Conflicted: Being Jewish in Secular and Multicultural Hong Kong Zhou Xun, University of Essex 1 Hong Kong’s Jewish Film Festival (HKJFF) is Asia’s only Jewish festival. Its current trailer begins with an image tracking a man wearing Djellabas style long dress and hat across the desert. On his journey he is first met by a Chinese girl and then a black man wearing kippah joins them. An Indian woman as well as a Caucasian looking male joins them later. The trailer ends with all of them dancing together. This trailer is based on a story by HKJFF’s founder Howard Elias, a Toronto-born Jew who is now the warden of the Hong Kong Jewish cemetery. It sets out to capture the Jewish experience in Hong Kong, and is a reflection of the multifarious natures of the Hong Kong Jewish communities, as well as Hong Kong society in general. Today there are between six to ten thousand Jews living in this densely populated cosmopolitan city. While the beautiful Edwardian free-baroque style Ohel Leah Synagogue is hailed as one of Asia’s oldest synagogues, Hong Kong is now arguably the center for Jewish life in Asia and the Jewish Community Centre (JCC), in a tall luxury modern apartment tower in 1 I am grateful for the generous helps from Brenda Yi, the librarian of JCC library, and Judy Green, the Chairwoman of Hong Kong Jewish Historical Society, and Elizabeth Sinn who introduced me to them. I am also grateful for the many conversations I had with Sander Gilman while writing this essay. -

Business archives in Hong Kong When the Hong Kong Heritage Project (HKHP) was founded in 2007, it was one of the first corporate archives to open its doors in Hong Kong. The archive, which houses the papers of the Kadoorie family and their business interests, was established by The Hon. Sir Michael Kadoorie to “save now for the future”. It followed in the footsteps of HSBC’s Asia Pacific Archive, founded in 2004, which pioneered business archives in Hong Kong. -
The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, Limited
THE HONGKONG AND SHANGHAI HOTELS, LIMITED THE HONGKONG AND SHANGHAI HOTELS, LIMITED CELEBRATES 150 YEARS OF PHILANTHROPY AND COMMUNITY RESPONSIBILITY HONG KONG, 25 NOVEMBER 2016 The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, Limited and its majority shareholders the Kadoorie family have placed philanthropy and community responsibility at the heart of the company’s business model since its earliest days, more than a century before “CSR” became a commonplace term in modern businesses. A philanthropic tradition The Kadoories have always been well known for their philanthropic nature. They contributed to the establishment of hospitals, elderly homes and community centres, and Ellis Kadoorie founded the Ellis Kadoorie Chinese Schools Society in China at the turn of the 20th Century, which established six non-denominational free schools for Chinese and supported the University of Hong Kong. He was instrumental in establishing Hong Kong’s Helena May Institute for women living and working away from home. He contributed towards a new school for the colony’s Indian children and endowed scholarships for underprivileged Indian children. He also assisted the building fund for a European YMCA, and when World War I broke out, he spearheaded support for a War Fund appeal to buy planes. In his will, Elly arranged for his fortune to be divided into three parts - one third to the British Government for funding schools in “Palestine or Mesopotamia”, one third to the Anglo-Jewish Association, and the final third to his brother Ellis. This bequest was the foundation of many important charitable institutions across the globe. Known in his day as the “Prince of Philanthropists”, Elly Kadoorie once commented that his own experiences with poverty had led him to the firm belief that “wealth is a sacred trust to be administered for the good of society”. -

What’s New Podcast Transcript Season 4, Episode 3: The Last Kings of Shanghai October 27, 2020 Host: Dan Cohen, Dean of Libraries and Vice Provost for Information Collaboration at Northeastern University. Guest: Jonathan Kaufman, Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter and author, and Director of the Northeastern University School of Journalism. Host: Dan Cohen (00:08): We have long been told that this will be the Chinese century as the most populous nation in the world achieves economic dominance and as it extends its political influence across the globe. But that still emerging future will also be an extension of China's complex past when other nations arrived on its shores with colonialism, capitalism, and once distant cultures. Today on What's New, how the remarkable story of two Jewish families in Shanghai can tell us a lot about China past, present, and future. Host: Dan Cohen (00:42): Welcome back to What's New, I'm Dan Cohen.
