Senior Campus News Maths and Science @Work: Over one hundred Year 7 students from Colac Secondary College and Timboon P-12 School joined our Year 7 students for a series of workshops yesterday aimed at examining a variety of careers in the dairy industry and how they use mathematical and scientific principles. The students in small groups attended a variety of hands on workshops with titles such as: Ice, cream, air: What is in ice cream? How to design a cow yard. Who moved the cheese? and Is that safe to eat? It was pleasing to see a number of ex-students conducting workshops and passing on their knowledge to the next generation. Year 8 students: Annabel Lucas, Georgia Bailey, Alinea Ellerton, Olivia Henzen and Casey Smith proved to be excellent ambassadors for the College as they worked tirelessly all day directing students to workshops and running errands for presenters. Thank you to Parents & Friends for catering for the event.

Congratulations to:  Sarah Delwig who represented the Hampden League in Under 14 netball on the weekend.  Charlie Lucas and Nicholas Borinelli who represented the Hampden League in Under 16 football on the weekend.  Olivia Henzen who has been selected to represent City in the interleague competition this weekend.  Kurt McDonald for being awarded Triathlon Junior Triathlete of the Year.  Callum McIlveen who was selected to boundary umpire for the District interleague match.

Junior Campus News

Open Night: The whole school was buzzing with excitement last Wednesday evening as we celebrated the wonderful learning that happens at Camperdown College. Our theme for the evening was Crack the Code and it was fantastic to see so many of our families wandering around the school participating in the classroom activities that ranged from magic card tricks and Egyptian numbers to invisible codes using lemon juice.

To conclude the evening, our Prep – Year 6 students performed an Indonesian number song under the guidance of Bu Jenna. Our VSSS students also showcased two of the dances from the State Schools Spectacular Musical that will be performed in in September. The final item of the evening was the highlight for many of our students – their parents and grandparents dancing to the Macarena. We are very proud of all of the programs that we offer at our school; we are fortunate to have such a dedicated staff to lead our students.

Musica Viva: On Tuesday, our students were entertained by world music group Amanaska. The concert gave a lively multicultural performance to our students, using voice, keyboards, bansuri and a slide didgeridoo. The students thoroughly enjoyed the performance and were intrigued with many of the instruments and their sounds. Thanks to our instrumental music teacher Fiona Pugh for organising the

concert.

Year 3 – 6 District Cross Country: Congratulations to our cross country team who competed at the District Cross Country Carnival in Noorat on Friday. They competed against other students from Simpson, Timboon, , Noorat, Camperdown and Mortlake. All students competed with enthusiasm and it was pleasing to hear the encouragement that they offered each other as individuals ran around the course. Well done to Eliza O’Neil who came third overall in the nine year old girls, however due to age restrictions, Eliza cannot progress to divisional level.

Pupil Free Day (Friday 5th June): The Camperdown College Council has identified this day as a Pupil Free Day for Reporting and Assessment purposes. There is no school on this day. Please be advised that this date adjoins the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.

Excellence ~ Respect ~ Responsibility ~ Caring ~ Honesty Year 4 Leadership Day: Our Year 4 students experienced an interesting and enjoyable day last Wednesday at the Gnurad-Gundidj Campus of the School for Student Leadership in Glenormiston. The Year 9 students at the Leadership School conducted a range of activities designed to teach our students more about the local area. We are grateful to the School for Student Leadership for providing us with this opportunity.

Preventing Childhood Obesity: The Prevention Childhood Obesity within Great South Coast study is an exciting study that is being conducted across all network schools in the Colac/Corangamite Network. This study is endorsed by the World Health Organisation. All of our Year 2, 4 and 6 students are being invited to participate. This study will examine influences on healthy weight and related behaviours (physical activity, sedentary behaviour, diet quality and quality of life) among children and adolescents across the Great South Coast region of Victoria.

Results of this study will provide information about effectiveness of current efforts to improve the health of Victorian children and adolescents. This information will be used by educators, policy makers, health service providers and researchers in future efforts to improve the health of Victorian children and adolescents.

The recent Year 10 Camp was a great success; the students thoroughly enjoyed their time in Melbourne. We attended the Careers Expo, completed a public transport activity, attended the VIS, Behind the Scenes at the Aquarium, attended a performance of The Lion King, had a Salvation Army tour/talk on homelessness, went up the Eureka Skydeck and visited the Shrine of Remembrance. It was a fantastic camp and I was very proud of the fantastic behaviour and attitudes that our students had.

Jodie McKenzie Year 9/10 Coordinator

Congratulations to Rose Geddes for winning second prize at the 2015 WRAD Art in Schools Competition. This is a fantastic achievement with over 62 other entries from students at Warrnambool College, Brauer College, King’s College, Emmanuel College, Terang College and Timboon P-12 School.

Other students who were selected for the exhibition were Ebony Prout (Year 11), Olivia Fenton (Year 11) and Mitchell Prout (Year 9). All of these students’ works are very strong and show depth, skill and creative thinking.

Each year, WRAD sends out a theme to schools that encourages young artists to discuss sensitive topics around substance use and mental health, in the controlled facilitated environment of the classroom. This year, the theme was Dual Diagnosis (Substance use and Mental Health) Everyone’s Business – Healthy Strong Communities.

The idea behind the theme is to create artworks that communicate how everyone can help reduce the impact of drugs and alcohol in our families and communities. Students are encouraged to explore ways to communicate a positive message of working together and helping others.

Camperdown College has celebrated a number of awards in this exhibition over the three years it has been running. It is a fantastic opportunity for students to exhibit their work in the formal context of an art gallery and share their fantastic artworks with the broader community.

Chelsea Fox, Senior Campus Art Teacher

Mirryn Ellerton, Cynan Ellerton, Zoe Wilkinson and Tim Fagan travelled to Melbourne early last Saturday morning to participate in the State Final for the Sayembara Lisan (Indonesian Speaking Competition). The students practised their speeches on the train with other Indonesian teachers and students from Warrnambool and Terang Colleges. Once at the Sidney Myer Asia Centre in Swanston Street, the group was amazed by the number of students from all over Victoria who were competing.

Tim and Zoe were the first to present their speeches, followed by Mirryn and Cynan. Tim and Zoe answered general conversation questions in Indonesian and then read a passage of text which they wrote themselves. Their presentation was concluded with some comprehension questions in Indonesian about the information that they read. Mirryn and Cynan also answered general conversation questions then they read a passage from a famous Indonesian tale Kancil dan Harimau (The Mousedeer and the Tiger).

All students left their assessment with a feeling of accomplishment and are now patiently waiting for their results that will arrive within two weeks. Mirryn, Cynan, Zoe and Tim all deserve to be congratulated for their impressive efforts in making it to the State Final.

Year 7 – 12 Cross Country House Cross Country: The Year 7 – 12 Cross Country was held at the Frederick Street Sporting Complex on Friday 15th May. The weather held up and the afternoon saw some great performances from our students. Congratulations must go to the following students who were awarded age group champions:

Junior Section: Olivia Henzen and Jack Helmore Intermediate Section: Bridget Moyle and Kurt McDonald Senior Section: Molly Helmore and Devon Coates The winning house for this year’s Cross Country was Leura who received a score of 144 for the day. Well done to all students who participated on the day, it was great to see everyone having a go. Thank you to all staff who helped out on the day.

HSSSA Cross Country: The HSSSA Cross Country was held for Year 7 – 12 students at the Frederick Street Sporting Complex in beautiful conditions which helped us to produce some fantastic results. We had approximately thirty five students represent the College and all students gave their all which enabled us to place third on the day. This is an outstanding result!

Congratulations must go to our individual age group champions Kurt McDonald and Jack

Helmore (pictured right) who produced excellent performances on the day. Well done to these boys and all students who took part and tried their hardest. I would like to wish the competitors who have made it through to the Greater Western Cross Country all the best as they compete on

Friday 12th June in Warrnambool.

Waterwatch As a part of Education Week, Corangamite Waterwatch ran a free Waterwatch Detectives activity promoting Maths and Science in the classroom for Year 3 – 6 students. This activity saw students sort and identify macroinvertebrates (water bugs) from a waterway near Colac. Many interesting creatures were discovered and our students were very lucky in having the digital microscope in which to get a close up and unique view.

The students then determined the abundance and diversity of water bugs and by interpreting the results were able to assess the overall health of the waterway. A discussion then followed about how we can improve the health of waterways.

Caroline Duynhoven Year 3 – 6 Science Teacher Interschool Junior Football We were met with very cold and blustery conditions when Year 7 – 9 students arrived at the Terang Recreation Reserve on Wednesday 20th May. Coached by Devon Coates and umpired by Callum McIlveen, we fielded a determined team of Year 7/8 boys.

The first game against Mercy was hard fought with the boys only going down by a few goals. Angus Gordon fired immediately to provide an aggressive defence, catching the eye of both the opposition coach and an under 15 talent scout. Ben Micallef was fast on the flanks and wings, getting down and pushing the ball forward. Ben Walters and Charlie Conheady seemed to be all over the ball, setting up plays and keeping the banter up! The second game was against Timboon, a very even match saw us get up by one goal towards the end. Daniel Nelson showed fierce determination with smothers and chasing players down, he definitely was our dark horse in this match. Mathew Pineo tackled relentlessly, whilst Thomas Nicholson and Charlie Tickner pushed the ball forward at every opportunity. The third game saw us battle Terang who had a lot of speed and good skills. The Camperdown College boys changed positions a bit and applied good pressure but went down by a few goals. Otto Leonard-Pekin took a hard ball to the body but soldiered on in the ruck feeding the ball down to Khris Clementson and Harry Sumner who put their bodies over it at every opportunity. Defence in this game was critical to prevent a blow out and Angus was in fine form again, supported by Dylan Jones who stood firm in marking contests and Riley Helmore who was a relentless tackler and proved hard for the opposition to grab. Our last game against Cobden saw us a little underpowered; Jayden Gullery was effective on the wing and seemed to be everywhere the ball was. Kane Leishman and Corey Jolly were quiet in the forward line but always met the ball full on when it went that way. Jack Helmore provided a lot of options from kick outs and flew in the packs.

I'd like to thank all the lads for competing in such fine spirit, they were cold and wet but had smiles all around. We will definitely be a force to be reckoned with over the next few years and getting a spot on the team might prove a challenge!
