    Major Thomas Livingstone Mitchell and Australia Felix Rod Bird Red Gum Festival, Cavendish 14 April 2018 1 Cavendish Red Gum Festival (13-15 April 2018) Anthony Watt, a committee member for the festival, asked me if I would provide an introduction to the forum by presenting Major Thomas Livingstone Mitchell and his exploration of Australia Felix. Anthony expressed a wish for me to deal with the River Red Gum in SW Victoria and the Major’s journey of exploration in 1836. He was clearly also interested in a theatrical presentation, assuring me that he would be able to borrow a suitable costume for the occasion from the Harrow Sound and Light Show! This short discourse is not the theatrical performance at Cavendish on the 14th of April 2018, where a major part was an impression of the good Major through a variety of sources, including his second-in- command Granville Stapylton, and the presentation of images of some of our majestic River Red Gum giants. It is a rather more sober (but hardly in-depth) presentation of the man and his explorations in eastern Australia – it is simply an introduction to the man and the legend for those who know little of him and his accomplishments. I have also presented here photographs of many of the plants that Mitchell saw and collected on his journey through south-west Victoria. Lastly, in this article I draw attention to the nature of the ‘soft’ and wet landscapes through which Mitchell’s bullocks toiled with their heavy drays – and how that has changed following settlement.

    Great South Coast Infrastructure Victoria is investigating infrastructure investment in regional Victoria that builds on the economic strengths of a region, or that reduces disadvantage, primarily through providing greater access to services and economic opportunities. This fact sheet is focussed on reducing disadvantage, and should be read in conjunction with the accompanying framework for reducing disadvantage through infrastructure. The purpose of this fact sheet is to provide evidence that will inform the problem definition for each of Victoria’s nine regions through consultation with stakeholders. The project has a specific focus on areas that experience relatively high levels of disadvantage (ranked in the bottom 30% of the index of Socio-Economic Disadvantage, SEIFA) and this fact sheet provides indicators showing poor outcomes for key demographic groups living in these areas. Infrastructure Victoria invites key stakeholders and service providers to make submissions that provide evidence on which infrastructure could make a difference in reducing disadvantage for the region. Other Names:Lawrence Islands, Ile Du Dragono (formerly); The Gannets(by fishermenlocally). Status: A Wildlife Reserve under the manage- ment of the Fisheriesand Wildlife Division with- in the ConseryationMinistry of Victoria. "e Description: Lawrence Rocks consist of two islands,the larger about 6.8 ha and the smaller 1.5 ha; they are separatedby a channelsome 50 m wide through which the sea runs hard, par- ticularly in rough weather. The main island is crescent-shapedand concave to the south-west, the direction from which the prevailing winds and wave action have extensively eroded the rock-face to create a complex indented outline. The shelterednorth-east face is a relatively uni form crescentprofile. The main island has a base centre-linelength of about 800 m and an average width of some 90 m with the highestpoint about 30 m above mean sea level. The smaller island is rouglly oval in shape, and about 180 m by 90 m witl the highest point about 10 m above E.s.l.; it lies oft the western tip of the main island. J. A.
