On October 18, 2006, a workshop was held in Vancouver, WA, with the title “Managing for wildlife habitat in Westside production forests.” The purpose of the workshop was to provide prescriptions and guidelines for people who manage Westside forests (those west of the Cascade Mountains’ crest) primarily for wood produc- tion, but because of mandate or personal preference, want to integrate wildlife values. The audience included over 150 professionals from forest industry, consulting firms, and public and tribal forest and wildlife manage- ment agencies. This proceedings includes ten papers based on oral presentations at the workshop plus a synthe- sis paper summarizing workshop themes, discussions, and related information. Topics include a history of wildlife management research in the Pacific Northwest, elements of habitat and how to manage for them, the challenges of appropriately implementing ecosystem management, and economic implications to private forest- land owners. Managing for Wildlife Habitat in Westside Production Forests CHANGING PERCEPTIONS OF THE ROLE OF MANAGED FORESTS AS WILDLIFE HABITAT IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST Keith B. Aubry1 ABSTRACT Forest management objectives and the perceived role of managed forests as wildlife habitat in the Pacific Northwest changed in many significant ways during the 20th century. Before 1900, wildlife was generally considered something to be exploited or exterminated, not managed or protected. This perspective began to change in the early 1900s when Theodore Roosevelt promoted the doctrine of “conservation through wise use,” and Aldo Leopold established the science and practice of wildlife management with the publication of his seminal textbook, Game Management. However, the most revolutionary changes in public and professional perceptions regarding forest management for wildlife objectives occurred in the latter part of the 20th century. Many of these changes began during the 1970s, after the environmental movement of the 1960s resulted in the enactment of federal legislation designed to minimize environmental degradation, perpetuate biological diversity, and protect endangered species. In this paper, I argue that changing perceptions about the role of managed forests as wildlife habitat were associated primarily with the following four key conceptual turning points that were strongly influ- enced by these legislative mandates and the ground-breaking research and landmark publications of various scientists and resource professionals in this region: (1) for which species should forests be managed? (2) at what spatial or ecological scales should forests be managed? (3) which riparian zones should be managed? (4) can old-growth attributes be created in managed forests? They are one of the largest woodpeckers in the world, and noticeable by their distinct black and white pattern and red plumage near their head. Primarily due to habitat loss, as well as hunting to a lesser extent, the Ivory-Billed Woodpecker is classified as critically endangered. However, many associations and biologists believe the species to be functionally extinct, as true sightings and evidence of living specimens has not been published in over 10 years. The Ivory-Billed Woodpecker is believed to mate for life like many birds, and both parents would work together to create a nest for the young. Much of the woodpecker's diet consists of larvae and insects, as well as seeds and fruit. Cool Facts • They are sexually dimorphic - only the males have the red plumage on their head. • Four distinct vocal calls were noted in literature, and two of these calls were recorded in the 1930s. • While many unconfirmed reports still come in, this species was assessed as extinct in 1994. However, this was later altered to critically endangered on the belief that the species might have relocated from their native habitat.

These concepts are relevant to videos that contain evidence for the persistence of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker. Drumming and wingbeats are two types of periodic motion of large woodpeckers. Tis paper discusses these behaviors and related transient motions that occur in evidence for the persistence of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker (Campephilus principalis)1–3. Most woodpeckers signal by drumming, which consists of a rapid series of blows with the bill. Audio S1 contains four drumming events by nearby and distant Pileated Woodpeckers (Dryocopus pileatus). Some members of the Campephilus genus do not engage in this type of drumming but instead signal with double knocks.

    IVORY-BILLED WOODPECKER Campephilus principalis E/Ex4 The North American population of this large, low-density woodpecker is very probably extinct, and the most recent evidence suggests that there is almost as little hope for the Cuban form, which was last reported in 1987 or 1988 with glimpses in 1991, despite much intensive searching in the Sierra de Moa, the area to which it finally retreated in the course of this century; destruction of its virgin forest habitat, of which each pair evidently needed very large amounts, is chiefly to blame for the loss of the species. DISTRIBUTION The Ivory-billed Woodpecker formerly occurred throughout the south-east U.S.A. (nominate principalis) and Cuba (race bairdii; see Remarks 1), but is now virtually or actually extinct in both countries, although evidence for its survival in Cuba is far more recent; for this reason, the following account principally treats the Cuban form, the North American race being judged probably extinct and not to be covered in detail here. U.S.A. Ivory-bills once ranged through the south-east of the country from south-east North Carolina, southern Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas and Oklahoma to the coast of the Gulf of Mexico and the Florida peninsula, with populations disappearing (as a result of forest destruction, but compounded by commercial collecting, which eliminated certain populations) from the northern and western extremities of its range before 1885, from most of Missouri, Arkansas, Mississippi and Alabama between 1885 and 1900, and from most of Florida, eastern Texas and Louisiana by 1930 (King 1978-1979).

An unusual observation of the Atlantic Forest endemic Robust Woodpecker Campephilus robustus dew-bathing socially is reported from Paraguay and discussion of its significance follows. Dew-bathing has been reported for a small number of New World bird families and has often been linked to a shortage of water, but has never been previously reported in New World Picidae. Given the environmental conditions in this humid habitat it is considered that dew-bathing in this family is related to structure and ecological constraints and not to limited access to water. Picids are highly arboreal birds with structural modifications for arboreality that make them awkward and thus potentially vulnerable when on the ground. A propensity for dew-bathing in forest canopies at sunrise may be a factor in the rarity of such observations and contribute to the lack of published reports.

On 21 May 2005, we detected a bird that we identified as an Ivory-billed Woodpecker in the mature swamp forest along the Choctawhatchee River in the panhandle of Florida. During a subsequent year of research, members of our small search team observed birds that we identified as Ivory-billed Woodpeckers on 14 occasions. We heard sounds that matched descriptions of Ivory-billed Woodpecker acoustic signals on 41 occasions. We recorded 99 putative double knocks and 210 putative kent calls. We located cavities in the size range reported for Ivory-billed Woodpeckers and larger than those of Pileated Woodpeckers (Dryocopus pileatus) that have been reported in the literature or that we measured in Alabama. We documented unique foraging signs consistent with the feeding behavior of Ivory-billed Woodpeckers.
