Se analizó y comparó la información de conglomerados del Inventario Nacional Forestal y de Suelos (2004-2009); 95 en masas con manejo y 27 sin manejo. Se determinó la estructura vertical por medio de la regeneración natural, pisos de altura de los árboles y posición sociológica. Las especies con distribución continua, desde el piso inferior de la regeneración hasta el piso arbóreo superior en el bosque con manejo fueron: Pinus durangensis, P. arizonica, P. ayacahuite, P. herrerae y P.engelmannii; mientras que, en el bosque sin manejo se registraron: P. durangensis y P. arizonica. Las principales diferencias entre los bosques estudiados correspondieron al promedio de altura en el piso arbóreo superior; en los bosques con manejo fue de 30.16 m y en los sin manejo, su valor fue de 21.86 m; además, se observó una mayor regeneración de P. durangensis en los primeros. Respecto a la diversidad de especies, no hubo diferencia significativa entre ambos tipos de bosque (P>0.05). Por lo anterior, se concluye que, de acuerdo con la información analizada, la regulación del aprovechamiento maderable con el MMOBI permite mantener la diversidad estructural y de especies, similar a la de un bosque natural sin manejo. -

Ivory-Billed Woodpecker Fact Sheet Common Name: Ivory-Billed Woodpecker Scientific Name: Campephilus principalis Wild Status: Critically Endangered - heavily believed to be extinct Habitat: Pine Forests, thick hardwood swamp areas Country: Southeastern United States, and a subspecies native to Cuba Shelter: Trees Life Span: Unknown - some speculate up to 20 years or more Size: Weighs about 1 pound on average, total length roughly 20 inches, with a typical 30 inch wingspan Details The Ivory-Billed Woodpecker is a very rare bird, native to the Southeast of the United States. They are one of the largest woodpeckers in the world, and noticeable by their distinct black and white pattern and red plumage near their head. Primarily due to habitat loss, as well as hunting to a lesser extent, the Ivory-Billed Woodpecker is classified as critically endangered. However, many associations and biologists believe the species to be functionally extinct, as true sightings and evidence of living specimens has not been published in over 10 years. The Ivory-Billed Woodpecker is believed to mate for life like many birds, and both parents would work together to create a nest for the young. Much of the woodpecker's diet consists of larvae and insects, as well as seeds and fruit. Cool Facts • They are sexually dimorphic - only the males have the red plumage on their head. • Four distinct vocal calls were noted in literature, and two of these calls were recorded in the 1930s. • While many unconfirmed reports still come in, this species was assessed as extinct in 1994. However, this was later altered to critically endangered on the belief that the species might have relocated from their native habitat. -

ABSTRACT Background. Mexico is one of the most floristically rich countries in the world. Despite significant contributions made on the understanding of its unique flora, the knowledge on its diversity, geographic distribution and human uses, is still largely fragmented. Unfortunately, deforestation is heavily impacting this country and native tree species are under threat. The loss of trees has a direct impact on vital ecosystem services, affecting the natural capital of Mexico and people's livelihoods. Given the importance of trees in Mexico for many aspects of human well-being, it is critical to have a more complete understanding of their diversity, distribution, traditional uses and conservation status. We aimed to produce the most comprehensive database and catalogue on native trees of Mexico by filling those gaps, to support their in situ and ex situ conservation, promote their sustainable use, and inform reforestation and livelihoods programmes. Methods. A database with all the tree species reported for Mexico was prepared by compiling information from herbaria and reviewing the available floras. The productive potential, developed seeds, upper and lower infertile ovules, and aborted ovules during the first and second year of seed formation were determined. X-ray scanning was used to determine the percentage of seeds that were filled, emptied, malformed, or damaged by insects. Seed production efficiency was also determined. Speed, value and percentage of germination were determined under laboratory conditions. -

Wingbeats are another type of periodic and transient motion of large woodpeckers. A model for the fap rate in cruising fight is applied to the Pileated Woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus) and the Ivory-billed Woodpecker (Campephilus principalis). During a brief transient just after taking of, the wing motion and fap rate of a large woodpecker may not be the same as in cruising fight. These concepts are relevant to videos that contain evidence for the persistence of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker. Drumming and wingbeats are two types of periodic motion of large woodpeckers. Tis paper discusses these behaviors and related transient motions that occur in evidence for the persistence of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker (Campephilus principalis)1–3. Most woodpeckers signal by drumming, which consists of a rapid series of blows with the bill. Audio S1 contains four drumming events by nearby and distant Pileated Woodpeckers (Dryocopus pileatus). Some members of the Campephilus genus do not engage in this type of drumming but instead signal with double knocks. -

Permite comparar el comportamiento de tres taxa de Pinus en los años 2013 y 2015. Se realizó la caracterización de sus conos a partir de sus dimensiones en ambos años, y se compararon los incrementos o decrementos en diámetro y longitud. Pinus engelmannii presentó un aumento en longitud de 17 mm y en diámetro de 19 mm; Pinus durangensis decreció 20 mm en longitud y aumentó 23 mm en diámetro. Pinus cooperi ganó 4 mm en longitud y 13 mm en diámetro. El tamaño del cono se relaciona con el potencial biológico y la producción de semilla (semillas desarrolladas, SD). En Pinus engelmannii el potencial biológico fue más alto en ambos años; Pinus durangensis y P. cooperi registraron un incremento de 2013 a 2015. Respecto a la producción de semillas (semillas desarrolladas, SD), no hubo diferencia significativa entre años Pinus engelmannii; Pinus cooperi y P. durangensis si se obtuvieron. La comparación de la producción de semilla en el género Pinus ayuda a conocer si existen diferencias significativas entre años de producción, áreas y especies, y así determinar que factores influyen en esa variación y como reducen la viabilidad y cantidad de semilla en los bosques. -

In part this is probablydue to the reluctanceto use highly adaptivefea- tures in phylogeneticstudies becauseof the likelihood of convergent evolution. Bock (1967) and othershave pointedout that adaptivehess in itself doesnot rule out taxonomicusefulness, and that the highly adaptivefeatures will probablybe the oneshaving conspicuous anatomical modifications,and Bock emphasizesthe need for detailedstudies of func- tion beforeusing featuresin studiesof phylogeny.Although valuable, functionalconclusions are often basedon inferencesnot backed up by experimentaldata. As any similaritybetween species is possiblydue to functionalconvergence, I believewhat is neededmost is detailedstudy of a numberof featuresin order to distinguishbetween similarities re- sultingfrom convergenceand thosebased on phylogenticrelationship. Simplestructures are not necessarilymore primitive and morphological trendsare reversible,as Mayr (1955) has pointedout. Individual varia- tion may occur and various investigatorsmay interpret structuresdif- ferently. Despite these limitations,speculation concerning phylogeny will continuein the future,and I believethat it shouldbe basedon more, rather than fewer anatomical studies. The root causes and required solutions will also be addressed in a general sense for all the major problems. The presentation will build on “Humanity’s Footprint,” a recent book on global environmental issues by Dr. Dodds. The talk will bring out points based on sound scientific facts, and issues that humanity should not ignore if they are to at least sustain current lifestyles, and certainly if we are to improve living conditions for all people. MALAYSIA: The ASIA Introtour A Tropical Birding Set Departure June 23-30, 2018 Guide: Ken Behrens All photos by Ken Behrens TOUR SUMMARY Any birder who has browsed through a southeast Asian bird book realizes that a huge set of lowland forest birds is found in the southern part of the peninsula, from southern Myanmar and Thailand south. Peninsular Malaysia is at the heart of this Sundaland biome, sharing a rich lowland avifauna with Sumatra, Java, and Borneo. Peninsular Malaysia also has tall mountains with a very different mix of birds – pseudo-Himalayan species, local endemics, and species shared with the mountains of the Greater Sunda islands. This tour is built around these two biomes. It is short and affordable, and provides a great introduction both to Asian birding in general, and more specifically to birding in the southern part of southeast Asia. One of the great things about this trip is its simplicity; three nights are spent at two locations: Fraser’s Hill (montane forest) and Taman Negara (lowland forest). The mangrove site of Kuala Selangor is also visited on the way to Fraser’s Hill, adding a nice suite of mangrove and scrubby forest species to the trip tally. Malaysia has excellent infrastructure, including great roads and luxurious lodging. The people are friendly and hospitable, and the excellent food is enriched by a mix of Chinese, Indian, and Malay influences. For those who want a longer sojourn in Sundaland, this short tour can be combined with the longer Tropical Birding Borneo tour that immediately follows it. Malaysia: The Asia Introtour June 23-30, 2018 In one week of birding, we recorded 243 species of birds. -
