South Africa's Exclusive Schools
THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN INTERNATIONAL EDUCATIONAL TOURISM AND GLOBAL LEARNING IN SOUTH AFRICAN HIGH SCHOOL LEARNERS by CHRISTINE ANNE McGLADDERY Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree PhD in Tourism Management in the FACULTY OF ECONOMIC AND MANAGEMENT SCIENCES UNIVERSITY OF PRETORIA Supervisor: Professor Berendien Anna Lubbe Co-Supervisor: Professor Jarkko Saarinen August 2016 - i - © University of Pretoria - ii - © University of Pretoria ABSTRACT There is a growing demand in the literature for rigorous empirical research to test the underpinning assumption of international education theory, namely that global learning occurs as a consequence of international travel. Through the application of a global learning survey instrument to 1152 Grade 11 learners in 16 South African exclusive independent high schools, evidence is provided to indicate that significant global learning only occurs when the international travel experience is facilitated to encourage learning, when there is a desire by learners to engage with cultural differences at their travel destination, and when learners feel comfortable expressing their opinions within their tour group. Furthermore, some types of international educational tourism are more conducive to global learning than others. Additionally, a conceptual, process-driven model of international educational tourism is proposed based on the synthesis of educational tourism, international education, experiential education and global learning theories. The model is tested and refined through analysis of the data collected from the questionnaire. By conceptualising educational tourism as a process it overcomes the limitations associated with segment- based definitions and in doing so demonstrates the potential for hybridising educational tourism with other sectors of the industry. Finally, owing to the expense involved with international travel, non-travel related factors are identified which encourage global learning in high school children. -

We're Still Celebrating!
We're Still Celebrating! Over the past few months, there have been many articles written about how people around the world have experienced an enormous sense of loss due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As we put this issue of the Herzlia Headlines together I can't help but feel this too. We were all looking so forward to 2020. A year ago, we commenced preparations and plans for our 80th birthday celebrations. What a programme we had. We started with the Kolhakolot Carnival, which was really the old fashioned Herzlia fete, but on steroids. Less than two weeks later we shut the schools down. The long weekend in August was going to be the primary focus for the remainder of our celebrations with Shabbat services and brochas in all our shuls, school parties where we would have invited alumni, past teachers and parents, alumni reunions at our schools, talks and debates, old boys sports matches and the highlight: Feel the Beat at the CTICC. Due to our 'New Normal', we have had to re-look what we are doing and how we are doing it. It is important that everyone is part of our celebrations. Feel the Beat is going ahead, but in a different format. We will be using the technology available to us to produce a musical Herzlia journey. Because it will not be a live performance it has allowed us to feature our overseas alumni together with our pupils. So SAVET HE DATE! On Sunday 25 October 2020 we will be showcasing Celebrating 80 -The Musical Movie. -
The Herzlia Alumni Association Newsletter I November 2019
THE HERZLIA ALUMNI ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER I NOVEMBER 2019 I It's hard to believe that 2019 is almost at an end. We have continued to engage and connect with as many of you as possible in order to provide you with relevant and up to date information about HERZLIA 80 LOGO EXPLAINED the Herzlia of today. Next year,2020, United Herzlia Schools celebrates 80 Years #HERZLIA80 CAMPAIGN LAUNCH of Excellence. HAA has approximately 7000 alumni world wide, of which more than 45% live abroad. In many institutions around the world, alumni provide major contributions to the ALUMNI REUNIONS organisations'ongoing sustainabilityand at times their continued existence.Jews worldwide havefound themselves in a different situation once they leave their 'motherland'; whilst they visit ABSA JEWISH ACHIEVERS AWARDS on holidays, they are inclined to invest in their newly adopted community. This investmentcomes when you send your children to the local Jewish Day School, support your local synagogue, ALUMNI NEWS old age home and social services. So much pressure is put on individuals to support their new community that the old ones fade into a distant memory. SIGN UP WITH MYSCHOOL CARD Our alumni play a crucial role in the sustainability of Herzlia. As alumni you can appreciate that a Herzlia education is a privilege that not all Jewish parents can afford. HFT is incredibly proud that hundreds of Jewish children over the last 80 years have been the beneficiary of committed and magnanimous donors who donate to our Bursary Fund. -
South Africa
South Africa National Affairs N<I OTWITHSTANDING A DECREASING budget deficit, growing ex- ports, and progress in housing, schooling, health clinics, and other social programs, the government, led by the African National Congress (ANC), faced growing criticism. Complaints focused on its handling of the cri- sis in Zimbabwe, its floundering HIV/AIDS policy, apparent irregulari- ties in arms dealings, and the slow pace of economic privatization. Taking into consideration the global economic slowdown and the ef- fects of the terrorist attacks in the U.S., the economy performed well, growing at nearly 2 percent. However, the value of the currency declined precipitously in the last three months of the year, with the rand falling by 25 percent against the U.S. dollar, ending the year 37 percent down, as inflation increased to 10 percent. The sudden, massive decline in the value of the rand sparked accusations of "sinister practices'' from the head of the South African Chamber of Business, Kevin Wakeford. A Commission of Inquiry into the Rapid Depreciation of the Exchange Rate of the Rand and Related Matters, under John Myburgh, was es- tablished in December to determine what caused the free fall. President Thabo Mbeki devoted considerable energy to regional prob- lems, including ongoing instability in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Burundi, and Zimbabwe. Within the framework of the Afri- can Renaissance—a high-priority project of President Mbeki—the New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD) was established, its ex- ecutive headquarters to be located in South Africa. NEPAD was to make the international community aware of world poverty and of the need to reform multilateral institutions so as to deal with it. -
