Religious Extremism and Sectarianism in Pakistan: JRSP, Vol. 58, No 2 (April-June 2021) Samina Yasmeen1 Fozia Umar2 Religious Extremism and Sectarianism in Pakistan: An Appraisal Abstract Pakistan, which was created on the basis of religion have had to face sectarian violence and religious intolerance from the very beginning. This article offers an in-depth analysis of sectarianism and religious intolerance and their direct role in the current chaotic state of Pakistan. This article revolves around the two main research questions including the role of religion in the state of Pakistan as well as the evidences depicting sectarian violence in Pakistan. The main objective is to analyze the future situation of the rampant sectarian condition in the society and to study the role of Pakistan’s government so far. Qualitative methodology using primary as well as secondary sources are used to gather the data. Post-dictatorship era, after 2007, is being analyzed in this article, keeping in view the history of sectarian violence, future and stability of the state. Last comments lead to the recommendations and ways to tackle the sectarian divide and religious extremism. The researchers conclude that religion is core at the Pakistan’s nationalism however, religious extremism weakens national and social cohesion and also divides loyalties. There is a need for strict blasphemy laws, banning hate speeches which incites the violence and most importantly, eradicating poverty and unemployment, so no foreign elements can bribe anyone for sectarian terror within the state. Introduction Pakistan was a country that was created on the basis of religion, its main goal was to provide a homeland for Muslims where they will live in freedom and harmony and it was established that it will be governed according to the principles set by Islam.

  • Sectarian Conflict in Pakistan: Some Lessons from the Irish Experience 51
50 IPRI Journal X, no.1 (Winter 2010): 50-76 Moonis Ahmar SECTARIAN CONFLICT IN PAKISTAN: SOME LESSONS FROM ∗ THE IRISH EXPERIENCE Moonis Ahmar** Abstract This paper attempts to examine the dynamics of sectarian conflict in Pakistan in the context of lessons that may be learned from the Irish experience. The application of conflict resolution (CR) in the context of Pakistan and Northern Ireland raises two arguments: First, in both cases, the resolution of conflict is yet to take place and second, pending issues seem to be impeding the final settlement. The CR process in case of Pakistan is more complicated as unlike Northern Ireleand, where a substantive agreement in the shape of Good Friday Agreement (GFA) mediated by the then US President Bill Clinton in April 1998 exists, no substantive effort has been made to establish a mechanism for durable peace between the Shi’a and Sunni communities. Case studies of the conflicts in the two countries can provide a conceptual framework for the application of conflict management (CM) as a viable approach for disengaging the conflicting parties and allowing them a cooling off period pending a final settlement. The lessons learned from the management of the Irish conflict can be of great help to those who are involved in seeking a better understanding of the sectarian conflict in Pakistan. These lessons are: first the conflicting parties have the political will to sit down and talk, second, adoption of a moderate approach by the Irish Republican Army and the Unionist party and third, readiness to accept third party mediation.

Beyond the Sipahs, Jaishs and Lashkars Sectarian Violence in Pakistan as Reproduction of Exclusivist Sectarian Discourse Katja RIIKONEN Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Peace Studies University of Bradford 2012 ABSTRACT Katja Riikonen Beyond the Sipahs, Jaishs and Lashkars - Sectarian violence in Pakistan as reproduction of exclusivist Sectarian Discourse Keywords: Pakistan, sectarianism, sectarian violence, identity politics, sectarian discourse, religious violence This research project examines sectarianism and sectarian violence in Pakistan between 1996-2005. It represents a departure from the security- focused research on sectarianism and provides contemporary analysis of sectarian violence by contextualising it. This thesis distinguishes sectarianism as an analytical concept from sectarianism as a phenomenon in Pakistan. The existing literature on sectarianism and sectarianism in the Pakistani context is critically examined, and this research is located within that body of knowledge. In this thesis, sectarian violence is understood as being conducted to reproduce and reinforce exclusivist sectarian discourse. This premise is analysed through the framework of identity formation and identity politics, and spatial understandings of identities. The study examines the locations of sectarian violence in Pakistan, and analyses the spaces where sectarian identity discourse is enforced and maintained through violence. Consequently, the concept of sacred space and sacred time are analysed as locations of sectarian violence.
