The industry comprises around three hundred entities. These are both large companies, with decades of experience in production, and also smaller enterprises established over the last decade, including many promising startups. Enterprises with high growth potential prevail, and over 60% revenues of these companies come from exports. 4 According to data of the Statistics Poland, exports of medical equipment from Poland are growing rapidly. In 2018, their value amounted to nearly EUR 2.2 billion, as compared to EUR 1.8 billion in the previous year. The Ministry of Entrepreneurship and Technology supports the development of the medical devices and equipment industry in Poland, and provides support for entrepreneurs in their internationalization and foreign expansion. The programs currently implemented support companies in promoting their brands with a potential to become recognizable on international markets. Thanks to our support, a growing group of Polish entrepreneurs present their product innovations around the world and develop export activities. Considering the international importance of MEDICA and last year’s success of the Polish national stand at this fair, the Ministry of Entrepreneurship and Technology decided again to organize a large exhibition space to promote the Polish medical equipment industry. The 2018 edition of MEDICA was visited by over 130.000 people from all over the world. On this occasion, the achievements of more than 140 Polish companies were promoted at the Polish stand, and over nine hundred B2B meetings were held there. We invite you to visit the Polish stand – a place for meetings and presentation of the Polish potential in the medical devices and equipment industry. I wish you many fruitful meetings at MEDICA this year! 5 Małgorzata Oleszczuk President of the Polish Agency for Enterprise Development The export of medical devices from Poland, to developed and developing markets alike, is growing year by year. Last year we broke another record, having exported equipment worth EUR 2.18 billion. Growth of exports is no surprise. Devices made in Poland have been gaining appreciation, largely resulting from consistent product improvements, investments in research and development as well as industrial design. Polish manufacturers of medical equipment have extensive experience in making high quality products and selling them at affordable prices. Increased international recognition of Polish medical companies can, among other factors, be attributed to their effective promotion activities, including attending the most important industry trade fairs in the world. Polish medical devices are well appreciated in countries such as Germany, USA, Denmark, United Kingdom, as well as in China, Kazakhstan or Turkey. Some domestic manufacturers already enjoy the status of global companies. The international 6 character of Polish manufacturers of medical equipment is further confirmed by the fact that on average 60% of their sales are exports. It is our goal to increase the number of such internationally recognized Polish companies. The government has been involved in promotion of the Polish medical industry for several years. The Polish Agency for Enterprise Development (PARP) is one of the entities which carry out promotion activities on its behalf, being responsible for the organisation of national stands at leading international medical trade fairs, such as MEDICA. In 2017 the Polish Agency for Enterprise Development organised the national stand at MEDICA in Düsseldorf for the first time. Our B2B area served to Polish entrepreneurs as the space for over a hundred business meetings with foreign partners. The high praise that the stand received from Polish companies, as well as their expectation that it becomes a staple of future editions of the fair, further strengthened our belief that the decision to become involved in the promotion of the Polish medical devices industry was not only right, but necessary. The experience we gained at MEDICA 2017 resulted in the great success of the national stand in the following year. Polish entrepreneurs attended approximately one thousand business meetings held at the national stand organised by PARP in 2018. The total space of 240 square metres made it a comfortable exhibition area and meeting venue for Polish companies and their partners. In 2019 the Polish Agency for Enterprise Development has a privilege to organise the Polish national stand at MEDICA for the third time. We are honoured that the Ministry of Entrepreneurship and Technology entrusted this task to us again, and we are certain that this initiative will contribute to many new business contacts of Polish companies. 7 Growing innovation of Polish enterprises Poland joined the European Union in 2004. Many enterprises made use of EU funds for research and development, as well as to modernize and develop their factories. Apart from that, they were now able to freely compete on the Community market – exports to the EU currently account for 59% of all medical devices and equipment exports from Poland. Many Polish enterprises in the sector have modern production sites, equipped with the highest quality means of production as well as state-of-the-art laboratory and research equipment. According to the Statistics Poland (Główny Urząd Statystyczny), in the years 2013-17 the expenses of enterprises on modernisation and R&D increased by around EUR 1.5 billion, from EUR 3.6 billion to EUR 5.1 billion. This allows Polish manufacturers to present a customised and flexible offer to their international partners, as well as highest quality products at attractive prices. Adherence to high European standards has translated into raising the international prestige of Polish medical devices and equipment, both within Europe and beyond. 9 Any Polish manufacturer wishing to sell its goods to other EU countries is obliged to obtain the CE mark confirming their compliance with quality and safety requirements. This makes it easier for domestic manufacturers to adhere to the standards required when having devices and equipment approved for use in markets outside the EU, e.g. in countries such as Russia or the United States where more and more Polish companies receive certification from the FDA (US Food and Drug Administration).
