Summertime is the perfect time for relaxing with family and friends. For many Quincy Public School students, it is also the perfect time for learning. Whatever your child’s interests, there is a program that can make their summer a special time of learning AND fun.

We are pleased to offer the innovative summer programs highlighted in this brochure. If you have questions about selecting a course for your child, please talk with their teacher or guidance counselor.

2 Title I Summer Program: Bridge to Reading and Math

Bridge to Reading and Math is a four-week summer literacy and math program for identified students entering Grades 1—5. The program is focused around a structured literacy model including increasing phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension skills. Foundational math skills using hands on lessons and manipulatives to increase fluency and number sense are also a focus of the program. Students learn how to read actively, pose questions, listen, and respond to others effectively in discussion.

This program is by invitation only (no registrations accepted). Transportation will be provided from designated school sites. Snacks are provided for all students.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION Quincy Public Schools will again be running a summer program for English Learners called SWELL (Speaking and Writing for ELLs) Academy. The program will offer current middle school English Learners the opportunity to participate in learning activities that incorporate teaching explicit English Language Development with a focus on language production (speaking and writing) through content, specifically Social Studies and Science.

Students will participate in hands-on field experiences that enhance their learning in the classroom. Our goal is for the students to improve their ability to speak and write in the English language.

SCHEDULE SWELL Academy will be based at Central Middle School on Monday through Thursday each week from 8:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

6 Camp Can Do English Learners in Grades k-2

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION This is a 4-week summer program for elementary English Learners called Camp Can Do. The program will offer current students in grades k-2 a program that focuses on English language development in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

The instruction will match the students’ interests, bridging academic achievement and connecting the students’ motivation to learning.

Quincy Public Schools publishes annual Suggested Summer Reading Lists, containing a wide range of books for up-and-coming (ages 5-7), growing (ages 7-10) and sophisticated (ages 10 and up) readers. Lists are compiled to guide students in selecting the very best books by both classic and contemporary writers. We encourage students to read widely and add to their reading list with books of their choice.

This one week session combines math with growth mindset and physical activities. The students will split their time between open ended math tasks and math themed gross motor activities. Team building and cooperation are addressed as many of the activities have the students working in teams to complete the challenges.

In this one week session, students will have the opportunity

to reinforce understanding and build number sense through a variety of hands-on activities. The lessons will focus on priority standards and use concrete and pictorial representations so students can strengthen their knowledge and build mastery of math concepts.

Knowledge Quest is a 2 week program designed for students that are looking for a summer challenge. This is an opportunity for high ability learners that want to expand their learning. Knowledge Quest will foster the individual interests of students and support these interests through project-based learning. Teachers will facilitate all facets of 21st century skills with students...supporting the process of planning,researching, critical thinking, reasoning and creativity, and strengthening students’ communication skills.

The Bright from the Start Transitions program will focus on skills and concepts that students will need as they move to the following grade level. This will make transitioning to the next grade a smoother process. Skills will include those needed for content areas, like ELA and math, but will also include various social and emotional skills that are needed for a classroom environment. Common expectations for classroom behaviors and routines will be practiced as well.

Super Summer Civics is for students that are interested in government and civics. They will immerse themselves in civic learning by exploring the foundations of local and national government. They will also learn about how to be a civic learner right within their own classroom. Activities will include inquiry exercises with primary sources, interactively exploring congress and civic engagement, as well as participating in mock trial mini-units.

Rather Be Reading is a virtual book club for students who want to engage in remote book talks during the summer. There will also be an optional opportunity for students to meet at the Thomas Crane Public Library to obtain their TCPL library card and check out books. Students will use the QPS Summer Reading List and resources from the Thomas Crane Public Library Kids Page to read and discuss favorite book titles and authors. Instructions will be given on how to sign up for a library card and log in to access free print and audio books. Lessons on text features and narrative story elements will be discussed.

Summer Program for Middle School Students Quincy Public Schools will be hosting an in-person Middle School Summer Learning program for eligible students entering grades 6, 7 and 8. The program is designed to boost academic learning while building perseverance and self-confidence. Instruction will be focused on core academic areas (Language Arts, Reading, Math, Science and Engineering) with the intention of activating and accelerating learning directly aligned to essential grade-level prerequisite standards. Students will also enjoy “electives” in visual or performing arts, journaling, health and wellness, civics, and social emotional learning. Our goal is to activate and reinforce learning so that students can perform at a higher level of proficiency in the classroom during the 2021-2022 school year.

The program will be Monday through Thursday each week from 8:30 a.m. – 11:30 p.m. starting July 6 (Tuesday) until July 29, 2021. Location to be determined soon.

Students will receive invitations from their home school. Parents and Guardians interested in this program should contact their building Principal.

A mid-morning snack will be provided and transportation will be available to and from a student’s home school, if needed.

Dear Students, Parents and Guardians,

Quincy Public Schools will be hosting two Remote Advanced Summer Sessions for students entering grades 6, 7 and 8. The program is designed for students who participated in the Grade 5 Advanced Placement Program (APP), the Advanced Placement Center (APC) or advanced coursework at any of our middle schools. Students who are interested in cultivating their math thinking and science skills are encouraged to register. Our teachers will help students hone their critical thinking and problem solving skills and prepare them to soar into their next grade level. Prerequisite content standards, necessary for success in the next grade-level, as well as challenging course work will be integrated throughout the program.

We understand that school closures have complicated our students’ ability to maintain important peer relationships and academic engagement. Therefore, our instructors will provide opportunities for peer interaction and collaboration, through games, trivia, and moderated discussions throughout the program.

Quincy Public School’s staff will provide the instruction for the program remotely using Summer Google Classrooms. Teachers will provide LIVE interactive learning experiences each day of the program. The expectation is that students engage with their remote learning, Monday through Thursday from 9:30 – 11:30 AM and that students abide by the guidelines for online participation, provided by the Remote Summer Program Staff.

Quincy Public Schools Ladders 2 Success

QPS Ladders 2 Success is a seven week program for incoming freshmen that will support their transition, while teaching them valuable life skills. Students will participate in career readiness activities, financial literacy education, and employability skills. They will complete a fundraising project for a local non-profit organization. Throughout the program, students will create a portfolio of their experiences. They will also present a capstone project in August, focusing on what they have learned throughout the seven week program. Twenty-five eligible 8th grade students, selected by their principal, will have the opportunity to participate in this program. Selected students will be notified, and must complete the application process prior to the start of the program.

Are you looking for academic continuity between 8th and 9th grade? Want to avoid “summer slide”? Bridge to High School Summer Institute is just for you! All current 8th grade students attending Quincy or North Quincy High School in the fall are eligible and encouraged to enroll.

High School teachers from Quincy and North Quincy High School will facilitate and teach these in-person learning sessions. Over this three week program, courses will review middle school prerequisite content standards as set by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Bridge to High School Summer Institute will provide support for students allowing them to feel comfortable and confident for their high school transition in the fall!

20 SUMMER PATHWAYS: CAREER VOCATIONAL and TECHNICAL EDUCATION (Current Grade 10 and 11 Students)

Quincy Public Schools Career Vocational and Technical Education (CVTE) is offering 10th and 11th grade students, currently enrolled in a Career Pathway, the opportunity to continue to obtain the necessary skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the workplace. Students will learn the importance of their CVTE Pathway, as well as the valuable applications of math, science, and communications skills.

Automotive Technology Students will be re-building an engine. Come and learn how NASCAR engines are born. Students will continue learning about the automotive industry and will be able to focus on one major project.

Business Technology Just about everybody loves sports! Whether its baseball, football, hockey or soccer, audiences are captivated by the highlights on TV, scores, statistics, and the roars from the fans cheering in the spirit of competition. What sports fans don’t get to see is what happens behind the scenes. In the DREAM TEAM, you will get this opportunity by starting, creating, and owning your own professional sports team.

In the DREAM TEAM, you will take on the role of a MS Office Sports Marketing Specialist to start your own professional sports franchise team. From creating a team name and logo to designing VIP passes for your new stadium, you will learn first-hand what it’s like behind the scenes of professional sports.

Carpentry Technology Quincy High School is building a Tiny House. Come and be a part of this amazing adventure. Students will be a part of the preparing the site for construction, learning and incorporating construction skills A Tiny House is a full-fledged dwelling on a small scale. It is complete with a kitchen, bath, bedroom, and living room. Come and be a part of this amazing adventure.

Plumbing Technology This class will be a focused on plumbing industry staples. Staples like toilet, kitchen faucet, lavatory faucet, and water heater assembly and installation. As well as continuing to work on important plumbing skilling. Skills like soldering, brazing, and other joining methods. 21 Culinary Arts Discover and learn about Foods from around the world. Students will explore cultures and food from French Cuisine to the Mediterranean. Students will explore and create 12 dishes from a variety of cultures. Our theme will be Around The World in Twelve Dishes.

Fashion Technology Fashion Technology students will produce a fashion show. Creating a theme, commentary, music. The show will be recorded. The show will consist of Eco Friendly garments as well as student designed collections.

Film and Television Technology The Film and Television Production class will focus on our new studio equipment. We have a Tricaster that we use to switch between our new studio cameras. This can also add effects and virtual sets, which we will learn how to set up. We have a new lighting grid with DMX lights and lighting board. We will use this equipment, as well as our portable cameras and

editors, to create a magazine format show.

Information Technology Students will explore and learn JavaScript. This is a state of the art programming language that allows the user to implement complex features on their websites. Learn to add action to your website with HTML 5, CSS and JavaScript. This will be Web Programming brought to another level.

Metal Fabrication and Joiner Technology Let’s have our Summer ideas become reality, as we start to build custom made items that remind us of summer. Students will explore and make tailgate grills, flowers, welcome signs, fire pits, bird houses, lanterns and more!

Quincy's Summer YouthWorks Program is a state-funded youth career exploration and employment program that helps young adults (age 16-21) obtain the skills, knowledge, and experience needed to find and maintain jobs. Participants will receive training in core soft skills so they can practice professional behaviors and learn how to relate to supervisors and co-workers at their worksites. Summer YouthWorks integrates the Signal Success curriculum to assist young people learn and practice the skills that matter at work, at school, and in life.
