The Making Of Star Fox Welcome to my first Newshounds article of 2019-2020! It’s that time once again of a new school year, which means a whole new batch of articles to publish! There’s a bunch of great articles that I’ve planned for this year, so before we dive into this article, let’s recap which articles I published last year! We started off the previous year with a Q&A about myself, where students could give me questions to answer! Let’s say there were some interesting ones in there! Christmas was approaching at a rapid pace and before the big day arrived, we delved into the history of Apple’s iPhone and we realised how far technology has come since the late 2000’s. After that, we entered the construction site to delve into the deepest blueprints of Blackpool Pleasure Beach’s latest rollercoaster ICON! Finally, we all came as one to choose which article to be published next. We ended up taking look at the history of Sonic The Hedgehog at Alton Towers, which covered over a quarter of a century to produce! Anyways enough rambling on, let’s get the ball rolling! Nowadays, gaming has come an extremely long way since its inception, but back in the ‘90’s we were restricted in technology compared to what we have today. Then, as adults, we were told to either be really good at our jobs or really good at caring for our family, but we couldn’t be both. Straddling the Great Divide: Intersections in Gameplay and Narrative in Contemporary Japanese Role-Playing Games by Sarah Michelle Helland A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in THE COLLEGE OF GRADUATE STUDIES (Interdisciplinary Graduate Studies) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Okanagan) August 2013 © Sarah Michelle Helland, 2013 Abstract This project explores questions concerning whether digital games should be studied in terms of narrative, ludology (gameplay), or both. The project begins by discussing the current state of Game Studies and the ‘narrative vs. ludology’ debate. The author provides a brief outline of contemporary theory surrounding the debate before asserting her central thesis that both gameplay and narrative are integral components of player experience and that both must be acknowledged. The author then outlines her research methodology, which includes textual analyses of two popular Japanese role-playing games. By examining the ways in which morality is depicted in both games, the author posits that the functions of both gameplay and narrative in constructing player experience will become evident. A brief discussion of what constitutes a role-playing game is provided, followed by a discussion of the ways in which digital role-playing games are cultural products. The author includes an analysis of narrative conventions in contemporary Japanese role-playing games in order to resist Eurocentric readings of the two games to be examined. The textual analyses begin with an examination of gameplay in Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. An analysis of the game’s narrative elements such as plot, characterization, and theme follows. Through this analysis, the author observes a marked focus upon collectivist morality, which is clearly observable in both the gameplay and narrative elements of the game. -

The Gamer Symphony Orchestra at The University of Maryland umd.gamersymphony.org Fall 2011 Concert Saturday, December 3, 2011, 2:00 pm Dekelboum Concert Hall Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center Kira Levitzky, Conductress About the Gamer Symphony Orchestra and Chorus In the fall of 2005, student violist Michelle Eng sought to create an orchestral group that played video game music. With a half-dozen others from the University of Maryland Repertoire Orchestra, she founded GSO to achieve that dream. By the time of the ensemble’s first public performance in spring 2006, its size had quadrupled. Today GSO provides a musical and social outlet to 120 members. It is the world’s first college-level ensemble to draw its repertoire exclusively from the soundtracks of video games. The ensemble is entirely student run, which includes conducting and musical arranging. In February GSO had a special role at the Video Games Live performances at the Strathmore in Bethesda, Md. The National Philharmonic performed GSO’s arrangement of “Korobeiniki” from Tetris to two sold-out houses. Aside from its concerts, GSO also holds the “Deathmatch for Char- ity” every spring. All proceeds from this video game tournament benefit Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. GSO has also fostered the creation of two similar high school-level ensembles in Rockville, Md., and Damascus, Md. The Magruder High School GSO was founded late in 2008 and the Damascus High School GSO began rehearsals this February.
