VICTORIAN DRAMA By jOHN A. DEGEN MosT HISTORIANS OF Victorian life and art have not given sustained and serious attention to the drama and the theatrical environn1ent in which it was produced. The theatre as a social pheno1nenon is forgotten in the wake of other, more pressing concerns-the growth of industry, labor legislation, public health, and political enfranchisetnent-while the drama written during the bulk of the century is generally looked upon as the black sheep of Victorian literature. Indeed, even historians of theatrical art tend to treat the nineteenth-century Eng lish theatre with overtones of derision, while most sur ve ys of British dra1na seem to suggest that the genre underwent a nearly total eclipse between the plays of Sheridan and Shaw. Yet the Victorian theatre was one of the most vitally active in the long history of dramatic art. Particularly after the well-reported attendance of the newly ascended Queen Victoria made it unquestionably respectable, the theatre was a part of the lives of London ers of all classes. And since the theatre was patronized by such a broad spectrum of the population, the study of the types of dramatic entertainment which were demanded and made available cannot help but be revealing of the society of the time. As a repository for the resources for such a study, the Lilly Library is as richly endowed with materials relating to the nineteenth-century British theatre as it is in the street literature and other aspects of Victorian popular culture. Victorian Literature
Victorian Literature Defining Victorian literature in any satisfactory and comprehensive manner has proven troublesome for critics ever since the nineteenth century came to a close. The movement roughly comprises the years from 1830 to 1900, though there is ample disagreement regarding even this simple point. The name given to the period is borrowed from the royal matriarch of England, Queen Victoria, who sat on throne from 1837 to 1901. One has difficulty determining with any accuracy where the Romantic Movement of the early nineteenth century leaves off and the Victorian Period begins because these traditions have so many aspects in common. Likewise, identifying the point where Victorianism gives way completely to Modernism is no easy task. Literary periods are never the discrete, self- contained realms which the anthologies so suggest. Rather, a literary period more closely resembles a rope that is frayed at both ends. Many threads make up the rope and work together to form the whole artistic and cultural milieu. The Victorian writers exhibited some well-established habits from previous eras, while at the same time pushing arts and letters in new and interesting directions. Indeed, some of the later Victorian novelists and poets are nearly indistinguishable from the Modernists who followed shortly thereafter. In spite of the uncertainty of terminology, there are some concrete statements that one can make regarding the nature of Victorian literature, and the intellectual world which nurtured that literature. If there is one transcending aspect to Victorian England life and society, that aspect is change – or, more accurately, upheaval. Everything that the previous centuries had held as sacred and indisputable truth came under assault during the middle and latter parts of the nineteenth century. -

Introduction to Victorian and Twentieth-Century Literature Heesok Chang Unlike the preceding three volumes in this Companion to British Literature – the Medieval, Early Modern, and Long Eighteenth Century – the current one attempts to cover at least two distinct periods: the Victorian and the Twentieth Century. To make matters more difficult, the second of these hardly counts as a single period; it is less an epoch than a placeholder. In terms of periodization, the Victorian era is succeeded – or some might say, overthrown – by the Modern. But modernism is not capacious enough to encompass the various kinds of literary art that emerged in Britain following World War II, the postmodern and the postcolonial, for example. We could follow the lead of recent scholars and expand the modernist period beyond the “high” to include the “late” and arguably the “post” as well. But this conceptual as well as temporal expansion does not take in the vital British literature written from the 1970s onward, an historical era distinct from the “postwar” that critics refer to, for now, as the “contemporary” (see English 2006). Of course, all periods are designated after they have finished, including the Victo- rian, which was very much a modernist creation. Yet it is unlikely we will come to call the period stretching from the middle of the last century to the early decades of the new millennium, from the breakup of Britain’s empire to the devolution of Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, “Elizabethan.” And this despite the Victo- rian longevity of the Windsor monarch’s reign. The queen is one and the same, but the national culture is anything but. -

Socialism and Education in Britain 1883 -1902 by Kevin Manton A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (PhD) Institute of Education University of London September 1998 (i.omcN) 1 ABSTRACT This thesis examines the policies of the socialist movement in the last two decades of the nineteenth century with regard to the education of children. This study is used to both reassess the nature of these education policies and to criticise the validity of the historiographical models of the movement employed by others. This study is thematic and examines the whole socialist movement of the period, rather than a party or an individual and as such draws out the common policies and positions shared across the movement. The most central of these was a belief that progress in what was called the 'moral' and the 'material' must occur simultaneously. Neither the ethical transformation of individuals, nor, the material reformation of society alone would give real progress. Children, for example, needed to be fed as well as educated if the socialist belief in the power of education and the innate goodness of humanity was to be realised. This belief in the unity of moral and material reform effected all socialist policies studied here, such as those towards the family, teachers, and the content of the curriculum. The socialist programme was also heavily centred on the direct democratic control of the education system, the ideal type of which actually existed in this period in the form of school boards. The socialist programme was thus not a utopian wish list but rather was capable of realisation through the forms of the state education machinery that were present in the period. -

Fact, fiction and method in the early history of social research: Clementina Black and Margaret Harkness as case-studies Ann Oakley Professor Ann Oakley Social Science Research Unit UCL Institute of Education 18 Woburn Square London WC1H ONR 0207 612 6380 [email protected] 1 Abstract The development of social science research methods by women reformers in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries is a largely buried history. This article examines the work of Clementina Black and Margaret Harkness, two British reformers who conducted many social investigations using a wide range of research methods. They also crossed genres in writing fiction, which was an accepted method at the time for putting forward new ideas about social conditions. Black and Harness were part of a vibrant network of women activists, thinkers and writers in late nineteenth century London, who together contributed much to the growing discipline of social science and to imaginative forms of writing about social issues. Keywords Social science; research methods; social reform; fiction. 2 Introduction Standard histories of sociology in both Europe and North America privilege the development of theory by men in academic institutions.1 This ‘origin myth’ eclipses empirical social science work done in community settings, an area of activity in which women reformers and researchers excelled in the decades around the beginning of the twentieth century. Historical narratives also pay little attention to fiction as a vehicle for transmitting accounts of social conditions, a tradition which flourished alongside the early development of social science. This article examines the use of fact and fiction and the development of social research methodology in the work of two women reformers, Clementina Black and Margaret Harkness, who both undertook and published social research and also wrote fiction in the period from the late 1870s through to the 1920s. -

Fabian Socialism - Oxford Companion to Australian Politics Entry Fabian socialism owes its inception to the revulsion and agony of conscience over poverty in late Victorian England. The Fabian Society was formed in London in 1884. Its best-known members have included Sidney and Beatrice Webb, Bernard Shaw, H.G.Wells and G.D.H. and Margaret Cole. Sidney Webb endowed the Fabians with his commitment to parliamentary reform and the encapsulation of their guiding principle as ‘the inevitability of gradualness’. Shaw summarised the society’s method of working for change no less memorably, in the slogan ‘Educate. Agitate. Organise’. The society was instrumental in bringing about the foundation of the British Labour Party, and remains an affiliate of the party, with representation at the party conference. Every leader of the party has belonged to the society, and in most cases served as a member of its Executive Committee. Margaret Cole describes the new party platform – Labour and the New Social Order - which Sidney Webb and the party secretary Arthur Henderson drafted in 1918 as representing ‘as nearly as possible the purest milk of the Fabian word’. The wife of a newly elected Labor MP in Attlee’s 1945 Labour government was heard to remark following the delivery of the King’s Speech ‘It’s just like a Fabian Summer School – all the same faces’. The society’s first Australian member was the prominent Melbourne statistician, senior public servant and barrister, William H. Archer, who joined in 1890. The first of numerous overseas Fabian societies was in Australia, where an expatriate London Fabian, the Reverend Charles Marson, established the Fabian Society of South Australia in 1891 – narrowly preceding the foundation of India’s Bombay Fabian Society in 1892 - and a Melbourne Fabian Society was established in 1894 by a second expatriate, Henry Hyde Champion, who also had been instrumental in bringing about the foundation of the London society, but had not joined it. -

tripleC 18 (2): 685-700, 2020 http://www.triple-c.at The Socialist Macro-Sect in the ‘Digital Age’: The Victorian Socialists’ Strategy for Assembling a Counterpublic By Ian Anderson RMIT, Melbourne, Australia, [email protected], jetpack.zoob.net Abstract: The Victorian Socialists (VicSocialists) are a socialist electoral organisation in Aus- tralia which has had some electoral success as a regional fourth party behind the Greens. This article seeks to address what kind of organisation the VicSocialists are, what communi- cative techniques the organisation employs in assembling a counterpublic or constituency, and what this case study illustrates in terms of the broader formation of counterpublics in the ‘digital age’. This article characterises the VicSocialists as a “macro-sect”, a new organisa- tional form. The macro-sect is something more than a socialist micro-sect and less than a mass party, while optimistically conceiving of itself as a proto-mass party. The macro-sect strategy is distinct from another 21st-century party-form, the digital party. Unlike the digital parties, which tend to fetishise digital media, the VicSocialists treat digital media soberly as just one tool in the formation and mobilisation of counterpublics, a tool with serious limita- tions. Additionally, digital media is complementary with face-to-face communication (such as doorknocking) in important ways. A study of a parallel US macro-sect, the DSA, similarly found that activists were ambivalent about digital media, yet strongly used it for promotion. This commonality with the DSA suggests the international emergence of a new organisation- al form, with a distinct communicative strategy for forming counterpublics in the so-called ‘digital age’ – one which necessarily uses digital media, yet does not fetishise it. -
