Concept

"In many languages we use the same word to say" red "and" colorful ". As a color par excellence, red is always ambivalent. It is the color of life, because it is the color of blood, but pouring it leads to death. It is the color of eroticism and love, but sometimes leads to passion and all the excesses of sin, lust and prostitution. It is the color of the divine love, but it is also the red of the Devil and the torment of the flames of Hell ... In the West, it is the color of the temporal and spiritual power: but its excess causes still the danger leads to the revolutions, red blood shed by the people revolted and massacred under the flag, always red, which by extension becomes that of the "Reds", communists, soviets, then Chinese ...

In her book "The Taste of the Red" (Mercure de ), Pascale Lismonde offers an astonishing journey in the many facets of this color from texts by Charles Baudelaire, , Nathaniel Hawthorne, Michel Tournier, Arthur Rimbaud, Shakespeare, Barbey d'Aurevilly, Aragon, Leila Sebbar, Matisse, Proust, Jean-Christophe Rufin, Tracy Chevalier and many others. "... From the book "The Taste of the Red", by Pascale Lismonde (Mercure de France), 2013

With the intention of continuing this debate, we are delighted to be able to present you a new artistic extract of the red color, through artistic points of view of Antonio Temporao, Maria A. Listur, Mauro Mejiaz and Sami Korhonen.

A great opportunity to discover their approach using the color that is such a present and diversified color in our daily lives and so important in contemporary art.

Antonio Temporao (Brazil)

Autoportrait Antonio Temporao

(1937 - 2011)

"If we look at contemporary life, it's like a river running towards its estuary, gradually taking possession of places ..." (Antonio Temporão)

In big cities, today's life treats the man with a lot of aggressiveness, transforming everything on its way into a gigantic gray mass that darkens us and projects us on a trajectory strewn with pitfalls where we live under the permanent threat of new cities that are constantly emerging and spreading, irreversibly, becoming little by little huge "stone jungles".

3

The man of the cities gradually sees the fear settle down and lives in the terror of the unknown.

But does life offer us an antidote against urban aggression, against this frightening mirror bristling with spikes that pierce us tirelessly, without our knowing how to face the defilements, the pain, all the sufferings inflicted on us by The contemporary world ? Where does this aggression come from, which made us forget tenderness and deprived us of the freedom to embrace what is eternal?

The series Aggressiveness and Sweetness of Antonio Temporão, denounces this trap almost without issue, represented by barbed wire points and by the red blood of the suffering which flows in the streets, in these difficult times.

But in this series of photographic metaphors, Temporão does not just ask questions, he also gives us the answers, he invites us to live a life lighter and softer. With his natural tissues, soaked with this red blood symbol of life, he tries to prove to us that beyond death, there is life, even if both are represented by the same color.

Bathed in a palette of carmine reds, this series, which manages the ambiguous feelings with a master hand, shows us the power of change that can be acquired thanks to two great antidotes of transformation: the awareness and the urban ethics.

It is by using his great experience that Antonio Temporão, born in 1937, presents us with this perfect metaphor through which he shows us, with great control of thought and expression, that it is possible to change the to be human through an awareness that is manifested by the beauty of the blood red, symbol of life, running through our veins and beating very hard in our hearts.

Mauro Mejiaz (Venezuela)

Alain Bosquet and Mauro Mejia. Paris, 1979 Photo archives Alain Bosquet

Surrealist Inspirations based on the subconscious and from his own beliefs on cosmic creation, Mauro Mejiaz (1930-2000) paintings are a science-fiction world of fantastic colors.

His oil on canvas paintings, provide a superb example of why Mejiaz is considered one of the premier Venezuelan colorists in Latin America History.

The paintings of Venezuelan artist and teacher, Mauro Mejiaz capture the essence of his own version of surrealism. Major critics and historians, such as Pierre Restany and Alain Bosquet, have credited him as one of the most influential artist in Latin America.

11

Encouraged by Braulio Salazar, Mejiaz enrolled at the Fine Arts School in Valencia, Venezuela and graduated in 4 years instead of the typical 5. In 1952, he put on his first solo show at Hotel Carabobo and participated at the Caracas Fine Arts School’s ‘XIII Salón Oficial Anual de Arte Venezolano’ exhibition. That same year he was awarded the Prize of Painting and Sculpture of the Lion’s Club in the X Salón Arturo Michelena in the Ateneo, Valencia. After his second solo show at the Ateneo, Valencia, Mejiaz won Valencia’s ”Herrera Toro“ award for his painting, ‘Transmutación’. Equal to his passion for painting was his love of teaching, Mejiaz served as the director-founder at fine arts schools in Barinas and Barcelona, Venezuela. Since the 1950s, Mejiaz’s work has been seen throughout the world and is included in many public collections, including, Museum of Contemporary Art, Madrid, Spain; Museum of Modern Art in Paris, France; and Galería de Arte Nacional, Caracas, Venezuela.

Mejiaz and his works have remained historically relevant after his passing in 2000.

He was the subject of a 2004 retrospective, ‘Ceremonia Imaginaria’ in the Sala de Exposición Centro Cultural Eladio Alemán Sucre in Valencia, Venezuela.
