Judges Ulrikka Gernes (Denmark), Marek Kazmierski Srikanth Reddy (USA), and Kim Maltman (Canada) each read 510 books of Jo Shapcott poetry, from 32 countries, including 37 translations. The term has been used by literary critics and anthologists to categorize works of poetry that combine formal techniques and practices from opposing traditions of literary history, but within cultural, postcolonial, and Asian American studies, it has served as an important term that designates sites of resistance within cross-cultural contexts of uneven power dynamics. This discrepancy in uses of the term hybrid serves as the basis for my critical investigation of experimental poetry by Cathy Park Hong, Craig Santos Perez, Don Mee Choi, and Monica Ong. This dissertation presents an interdisciplinary reassessment of the concept of hybridity that applies it to both formal experimentation and cultural content by examining the innovative ways in which Asian American and Pacific Islander poets use hybrid forms to represent hybrid identities and the particular social, political, and colonial contexts within which they emerge. While the term in relation to ethnic American poetry has primarily pertained to multilingual features, my study widens the scope of hybridity to not only include verbal expression but also visual forms of representation (such as photographs, illustrations, and digital renderings of images). -

ALTA41 promises to be another outstanding conference, with an almost around-the-clock series of panels, readings, and special events that underscore this year’s themes: Performance, Props, and Platforms. This year’s conference features 67 panels, 229 presenters, and 91 bilingual readers, not to mention the yet-to be- Wdiscovered talent among us that will shine at the always-amazing Declamación! Let me draw special attention to the theater events we have planned, and to the cross-disciplinary nature of the conference. We welcome renowned playwright, translator, and educator Caridad Svich, recipient of an Obie Award for Lifetime Achievement, as our keynote speaker. Two staged readings are planned, one cosponsored by IU’s renowned Department of Theatre, Drama, and Contemporary Dance, and another in collaboration with Cardinal Stage. Of particular note as well are the sessions “Translanguaging in ASL Embodied Poetry Performance: A Marriage of Words and Hands” (featuring the Flying Words Project, Deaf American Sign Language poet Peter Cook and collaborator Kenny Lerner), and the Translation Centre Stage Workshop. Endless thanks are due to this year’s conference planning committee. 2018 has been another busy year for our organization. Earlier in the spring, we signed an affiliation agreement with the University of Arizona, and effective January 1, 2019, ALTA will have its central office on the UA campus in Tucson. -

A C T A K O R ANA VOL. 20, NO. 2, DECEMBER 2017: 625–651 BOOK REVIEWS My Korea: 40 Years Without a Horsehair Hat. By Kevin O’Rourke. Folkestone, Kent, England: Renaissance Books, 2013. 314 pp. (ISBN: 9781898823094) For anyone who may wonder what South Korea was like before “the birth of Korean cool” (a review by this writer of Euny Hong’s book so titled appears in the previous issue of Acta Koreana), My Korea is an excellent resource. If you’ve ever read traditional Korean literature in English translation, you’ll know Kevin O’Rourke as our finest all-around translator—prose and poetry, past and present—as well as a gifted poet in his own right. The subtitle refers to the gauzelike headgear that no Korean gentleman in olden times would be caught without. And O’Rourke is being modest—he’s actually logged fifty years in the Land of the Morning Calm, albeit spending summers on the southeast shore of his native Ireland. That O’Rourke lacked the horsehair hat may suggest at first glance that he felt like a stranger in a strange land. In fact he “discovered very early that Korea gets in the blood.” And the lifeblood of this literary memoir is poetry—poems by O’Rourke himself and numerous translations he’s done over the decades, of vernacular lyrics as well as poetry in Chinese written by Koreans (hansi) spanning 1500 years—by my count well over 200 works, more than enough to justify the inclusion of My Korea among assigned texts for any university course involving Korean literature, culture, or civilization. -

They each received C$65,000 in prize money. Robin Robertson Colm Tóibín The Griffin Poetry Prize was founded in 2000 to encourage and celebrate excellence in poetry. The prize is for first edition books of poetry written in, or translated into, English and submitted from anywhere in the world. The awards ceremony, attended by some 320 invited guests, was held in the Fermenting Cellar in The Distillery Historic District. Scott Griffin, founder of the prize, and trustees Mark Doty, Carolyn Forché, Marek Kazmierski, Jo Shapcott, Karen Solie, Ian Williams and David Young hosted the event where the guests enjoyed readings by Nicole Brossard, The Griffin Trust For Excellence In Poetry’s 2019 Lifetime Recognition Award recipient, and a recitation of the poem “Star Gazer” by Dominique Christina, by Catricia Hiebert, a 2019 national winner of Poetry In Voice/Les voix de la poésie. The judges for the 2019 Griffin Poetry Prize are Ulrikka Gernes (Denmark), Kim Maltman (Canada) and Srikanth Reddy (US).
