Questo nuovo interessamento per il tema ha portato gli studiosi a concentrarsi su di un problema in particolare, in parte già trattato in precedenti lavori (si pensi ai lavori dell’Harrison e del Bradeen, o a quello più recente della Bettolini), allo scopo di ridiscuterlo alla luce di una prospettiva fortemente arricchita dalla documentazione archeologica: si tratta del problema delle origini dei Calcidesi di Tracia la cui euboicità si è pensato di poter mettere nuovamente in discussione. Il discorso sui Calcidesi di Tracia chiama però inevitabilmente in causa altre più generali questioni, non sempre prese in considerazione, sul significato, sui tempi e sui modi dell’insediamento euboico nella regione, questioni che, soprattutto in seguito alle sollecitazioni emerse nel corso del convegno sull’Eubea e la presenza euboica in Calcidica ed in Occidente, tenutosi a Napoli nel 1996, dovevano essere affrontate allo scopo di tracciare un quadro più ampio e completo in relazione al quale leggere ed interpretare quanto la tradizione letteraria da un lato ed i nuovi dati archeologici dall’altro ci dicono sulla presenza euboica nell’Egeo settentrionale. L’attualità del problema è del resto ancora evidente qualora si consideri quello che emerge dai recentissimi lavori pubblicati dall’Australian Archaeological Institute at Athens su Torone 1, nei quali la discussione sulla più antica storia 1 Mi riferisco in particolare al volume Torone I. the excavations of 1975, 1976 and 1978 , pubblicato nel 2001 ad Atene a Iron Age Cemetery at Torone , vol. The literary, documentary and epigraphical testimonia , Athens 2004. 5 della città è di nuovo posta in termini di euboicità o non euboicità dell’insediamento, di adattabilità o non adattabilità del dato archeologico con le fonti letterarie, in un quadro che in generale nega che i Calcidesi di Tracia possano essere collegati a Calcide in Eubea ed interpreta la continuità che caratterizza dal punto di vista della cultura materiale la storia dell’insediamento come riflesso della mancanza di un momento di “fondazione” greca. Rispetto all’impostazione dominante in questi studi più recenti ci è sembrato opportuno riprendere la discussione sulla colonizzazione euboica nella Calcidica in una prospettiva più ampia. Liberandosi di una impostazione della discussione del problema che appare spesso “limitata” dalla volontà di far coincidere a tutti i costi tradizione letteraria e dati archeologici, si cercherà di affrontare l’argomento attraverso la valutazione di più aspetti quali: la continuità che si rivela nella storia dei rapporti tra l’Eubea ed il nord dell’Egeo; il ruolo svolto dall’interesse per le risorse locali; il rapporto con gli indigeni (sulla base di quanto si può cogliere non solo da quanto in generale emerge dalle tradizioni relative alla creazione di insediamenti in area tracia, ma anche più specificatamente da quanto si riflette nelle tradizioni mitiche che si riferiscono ai centri euboici); le forme politiche sulla base delle quali si organizzano le comunità euboiche. Insomma, lo scopo di questo lavoro è quello di ricostruire la storia più antica della presenza euboica nella regione, della quale si cerca di definire tempi e caratteristiche 2 all’interno del quadro più generale delle navigazioni e delle esperienze insediative euboiche d’età arcaica. Il problema del rapporto tra tradizione letteraria e dati archeologici che è stato più volte richiamato negli studi recenti 3 sull’attività insediativa euboica lungo 2 Si tratta di una impostazione diversa, sostanzialmente più generale, rispetto a quella sviluppata nell’unica monografia (se si eccettua il lavoro della Psoma- PSOMA 2001- che affronta principalmente questioni numismatiche) finora dedicata agli Eubei nella Calcidica, quella dello Zahrnt (ZAHRNT 1978), che in verità si concentra,ancora una volta, sui Calcidesi di Tracia e sulla storia della Lega calcidica, in una prospettiva che non è certo quella di un discorso su una vicenda di colonizzazione (che tra l’altro lo studioso esclude, riconoscendo nei Calcidesi di Tracia un locale ethnos greco senza alcun rapporto con l’Eubea). 3 Si pensi ad esempio ai lavori di Hammond e dello Snodgrass (HAMMOND 1995; SNODGRASS 1994) e, soprattutto, ai numerosi interventi del Papadopoulos che ha molto ridimensionato il valore 6 la costa tracia deve essere rivisto anche tenendo conto di quanto sta emergendo dalle riflessioni più recenti sulla colonizzazione arcaica. Appare particolarmente sentita infatti per il caso della Calcidica la necessità di evitare l’applicazione di modelli interpretativi troppo rigidi alla luce del carattere complesso, dinamico e variegato degli aspetti e degli esiti delle esperienze insediative greche di epoca arcaica. Si tratta di una prospettiva che, come si è detto, viene emergendo ultimamente negli studi sui fatti coloniali della Grecia antica e che ha portato fino a interpretazioni radicali come quella dell’Osborne 4 il quale non solo avanza forti dubbi sulla possibilità di ricostruire la colonizzazione di VIII-VII sec. a partire da fonti letterarie molto più tarde rispetto agli eventi che raccontano, ma propone anche di sostituire al modello basato sul rapporto metropolis-apoikia , un modello che fa scaturire le fondazioni gerche d’occidente da iniziative private di individui e gruppi che si stabiliscono in regioni presentanti condizioni favorevoli all’insediamento convivendo, almeno in un primo momento, con le popolazioni locali. Questa troppo radicale interpretazione è il riflesso del bisogno di tener conto del carattere articolato delle più antiche fasi dell’insediamento greco d’oltremare (sebbene a questo bisogno l’Osborne risponda comunque con una rappresentazione del fenomeno coloniale arcaico ugualmente appiattita e generalizzante). Tale bisogno è certo molto sentito soprattutto, ma non solo, in quegli studi che si rivolgono ad aree “periferiche” del mondo coloniale (anche questi divenuti più frequenti negli ultimi decenni), come la Tracia ed il Ponto 5, dove particolarmente problematica diventa la definizione di fenomeni insediativi segnati da una forte dimensione emporica e da una evidente complessità dei rapporti con gli indigeni (ed al mondo indigeno, alle dinamiche di relazione con i Greci, si dedica oggi una più forte attenzione anche per le colonie del Mediterraneo).     ARCHAIC ERETRIA This book presents for the first time a history of Eretria during the Archaic Era, the city’s most notable period of political importance. Keith Walker examines all the major elements of the city’s success. One of the key factors explored is Eretria’s role as a pioneer coloniser in both the Levant and the West— its early Aegean ‘island empire’ anticipates that of Athens by more than a century, and Eretrian shipping and trade was similarly widespread. We are shown how the strength of the navy conferred thalassocratic status on the city between 506 and 490 BC, and that the importance of its rowers (Eretria means ‘the rowing city’) probably explains the appearance of its democratic constitution. Walker dates this to the last decade of the sixth century; given the presence of Athenian political exiles there, this may well have provided a model for the later reforms of Kleisthenes in Athens. Eretria’s major, indeed dominant, role in the events of central Greece in the last half of the sixth century, and in the events of the Ionian Revolt to 490, is clearly demonstrated, and the tyranny of Diagoras (c. 538–509), perhaps the golden age of the city, is fully examined. Full documentation of literary, epigraphic and archaeological sources (most of which have previously been inaccessible to an English-speaking audience) is provided, creating a fascinating history and a valuable resource for the Greek historian. To Zeus and Nemea I owe a gift of gratitude, nymph, sacred blood of the sibling gods, our victory song […] of horses. Zeus and Nemea appear as the receivers of Callimachus’ gift because of their connection with the Nemean games: the myth of the Victoria Berenices narrates the killing of the Nemean lion but memorializes the creation by Heracles of the wreath that Nemean victors received as a prize. The mythic part of the poem concludes with a sacrifice to Zeus performed jointly by Heracles and Molorcus (fr.60c.8–10). The frame mirrors, in this regard, the actions of the myth: Heracles offers a sacrifice to his divine father with the assistance of his host, Molorcus; Berenice consecrates the elegy to Zeus, the divine progenitor of 1 I cite the edition of A.     Divine Riddles: A Sourcebook for Greek and Roman Mythology March, 2014 E. Edward Garvin, Editor What follows is a collection of excerpts from Greek literary sources in translation. The intent is to give students an overview of Greek mythology as expressed by the Greeks themselves. But any such collection is inherently flawed: the process of selection and abridgement produces a falsehood because both the narrative and meta-narrative are destroyed when the continuity of the composition is interrupted. Nevertheless, this seems the most expedient way to expose students to a wide range of primary source information. I have tried to keep my voice out of it as much as possible and will intervene as editor (in this Times New Roman font) only to give background or exegesis to the text. All of the texts in Goudy Old Style are excerpts from Greek or Latin texts (primary sources) that have been translated into English. Ancient Texts In the field of Classics, we refer to texts by Author, name of the book, book number, chapter number and line number.1 Every text, regardless of language, uses the same numbering system. Homer’s Iliad, for example, is divided into 24 books and the lines in each book are numbered. Hesiod’s Theogony is much shorter so no book divisions are necessary but the lines are numbered. Below is an example from Homer’s Iliad, Book One, showing the English translation on the left and the Greek original on the right. When citing this text we might say that Achilles is first mentioned by Homer in Iliad 1.7 (i.7 is also acceptable).

    War and the Warrior: Functions of Ares in Literature and Cult Alexander T. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 Abstract This dissertation presents a new interpretative synthesis of the sources relating to the cults, identities, and functions of the god Ares, focusing on the Archaic and Classic periods. An apparent dichotomy is identified: in many respects, the evidence suggests that Ares must have been a very important god throughout much of the Greek world throughout the Archaic and Classic periods (and beyond), but in other respects the evidence suggests that he was not. I argue that this dichotomy does not derive from changes in the popularity, relevance, or nature of the god, as has been proposed. Instead, I argue that the elements of Ares’ cults and representations which suggest that Ares was unpopular or unimportant derive from those which made him important and continually relevant. I argue that because Ares was identified with war, attitudes towards the god directly reflect Greek attitudes towards war. War’s importance as an element of Greek life, and the god’s power as a causal force with it, led to deep respect for Ares, reflected by widespread cult, and a place among the great Olympians. But the wild, destructive, and unpredictable nature of war, which Ares represented, meant that he was not a regular recipient of large-scale celebratory cult.

    Two Is Company, Three Is A Crowd: An analysis of the relationships between Herakles, Hera & Zeus in Apollodoros’ Bibliotheke Jessica Casbolt A thesis submitted to Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirement for the degree of Master of Arts in Classical Studies 2013 School of Art History, Classics and Religious Studies 1 Abstract This thesis examines the relationships between Herakles, Hera and Zeus in five mythic episodes in the Bibliotheke: the punishment of Hera; the Gigantomachy; Herakles’ birth and early life; the madness of Herakles; and his death, apotheosis and marriage to Hebe. These episodes display a variety of interactions between the figures across the life of Herakles. From his birth to his death and apotheosis, his relationship with Hera is of a contentious nature. Zeus’ involvement in the life of Herakles is often absent during crucial points. Apollodoros’ Bibliotheke is a survey of myth composed by an author who evidently had considerable literary resources to hand. What this means for the work is that the options available to Apollodoros were vast; thus we must attribute a great deal of choice to him in his compilations of the myths. As a result, when viewing the relationships between the three figures, we can investigate Apollodoros’ adjustments to the myths and attempt to uncover how he wished to portray the figures of Herakles, Hera and Zeus. As well as displaying information in the text, Apollodoros’ strict structuring method also presents us with more information. The genealogical structure forms the backbone of the work; it is in the deliberate placements of certain myths, however, such as the Punishment of Hera (Bib 1.3.5; 2.7.1) and the Gigantomachy (1.6.1; 2.7.1), that we see the effect of his conscious decisions in regard to the structure of the Bibliotheke.

Scholars suggest Etruscan, Umbrian or even Celtic descent by examining the linguistic or ethnic markers of the region. Analysis of his name has led to beliefs that he descended from earlier Roman colonists. Modern speculation ultimately is not supported by narrative evidence either from his own writings or his later biographers. Etymological fancy has noted that his cognomen MARO shares its letters anagrammatically with the twin themes of his epic: AMOR (love) and ROMA (Rome). Legend also has it that Virgil received his first education when he was 5 years old and that he later went to Rome to study rhetoric, medicine, and astronomy, which he soon abandoned for philosophy; also that in this period, while in the school of Siro the Epicurean, he began to write poetry. A group of small works attributed to the youthful Virgil survive, but are largely considered spurious. One, the Catalepton, consists of fourteen short poems, some of which may be Virgil's, and another, a short narrative poem titled the Culex ("The Gnat"), was attributed to Virgil as early as the 1st century CE. These dubious poems are sometimes referred to as the Appendix Vergiliana. During the civil strife that killed the Roman Republic, when Julius Caesar had been assassinated in 44 BCE, the army led by his assassins Brutus and Cassius met defeat by Caesar's faction, including his chief lieutenant Mark Antony and his newly adopted son Octavian Caesar in 42 BCE in Greece near Philippi.
