Dutton Abstract Pirates are literally getting away with murder. Modern pirates are attacking vessels, hijacking ships at gunpoint, taking hostages, and injuring and killing crew members.1 They are doing so with increasing frequency. According to the International Maritime Bureau (“IMB”) Piracy Reporting Center’s 2009 Annual Report, there were 406 pirate attacks in 2009—a number that has not been reached since 2003. Yet, in most instances, a culture of impunity reigns whereby nations are not holding pirates accountable for the violent crimes they commit. Only a small portion of those people committing piracy are actually captured and brought to trial, as opposed to captured and released. For example, in September 2008, a Danish warship captured ten Somali pirates, but then later released them on a Somali beach, even though the pirates were found with assault weapons and notes stating how they would split their piracy proceeds with warlords on land. Britain’s Royal Navy has been accused of releasing suspected pirates,7 as have Canadian naval forces. Only very recently, Russia released captured Somali pirates—after a high-seas shootout between Russian marines and pirates that had attacked a tanker carrying twenty-three crew and US$52 million worth of oil.9 In May 2010, the United States released ten captured pirates it had been holding for weeks after concluding that its search for a nation to prosecute them was futile.

    Steve Earle Townes Biography Steve Earle had two reasons for coming out with this long-planned tribute to Townes Van Zandt now. The first reason is practical. Earle is currently pushing himself to finish a years-in-the-making novel, and he wants to see it in print before the publishing business goes belly up. The second is a more personal concern. Like all artists worthy of the name, Steve Earle loves the truth, and in the case of Van Zandt, he sees that the waters are muddying before his eyes. Very often over periods of years, the truth first becomes myth and myth later becomes truth. In regards to his teacher, hero and friend Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle was not about to let that happen. “I’m very thankful that when I got out of jail I started meeting people like Jay Farrar and other people his age that knew Townes chapter and verse,” he says. “I’ve always been very thankful for that. But a lot of what powered that is a take on roots music that comes from alternative music, and the crowd that kind of attached itself to Townes was the same kind of people that have White Light / White Heat in the front of their record collection so everybody knows how intense they are when they have a party. I love that record, but I don’t think I’ve listened to it all the way through since I bought it.” “I’m tryin’ not to kill myself,” he laughs.     TEN Wildness, Eschatology, and Enclosure in the Songs of Townes Van Zandt Michael B. MacDonald INTRODUCTION Loss and tragedy were present in the earliest days of American country music in part because it emerged from the great urbanization of America. This was a time of massive relocation when American life quickly and violently became city life. Country music, like folk music before it, was born from the shock of urbanization. Lola Scobey, in the liner notes of Van Zandt' s 1978 release Flyin' Shoes, remarked: "Townes carries the terror and the sorrow of a deeply sensitive man who has looked into the abyss and seen... the abyss." But this is too romantic; there is no abyss. Van Zandt looked at the folk on Main Street and wrote about it; however, this makes it sound too obvious, perhaps too na1ve. Van Zandt is anything but naive. His observations cut to the bone and reverberate upon the fractured psyche of America gone wrong, an America suffering from loss. I would contend that he wrote about the dark side of the American dream, or, perhaps, that he wrote mini-docu­ mentaries of the American dream becoming nightmare. However, sloppy words such as these do Van Zandt an injustice. These are the words of platitude and marketing, of Hallmark sentimentality. Van Zandt does not choose these words; instead, he strikes out against marketing corpora­ tions and entertainment companies who ingest romanticism and replace history with an imaginary vision of an ideal past. Culwell The Ben Gray Lumpkin Collection of Colorado Folklore Professor Ben Gray Lumpkin, who retired from the University of Colorado in June of 1969, spent more than twenty years of his academic career amassing a large collection of folksongs in the state of Colorado. At my request, Profes- sor Lumpkin provided the following information concerning his life and career: Son of John Moorman and Harriet Gray Lumpkin, I was born De- cember 25, 1901, in Marshall County, Mississippi, on a farm about seven miles north of Holly Springs. Grandpa was a Methodist cir- cuit rider, but had to farm to eke out a living because his hill-coun- try churches were too poor to support his family. Because we lived too far from the Hudsonville school for me to walk, I began schooling under my mother until I was old enough to ride a gentle mare and take care of her at school—at the age of 8. When my father bought a farm in Lowndes County, Mississippi, my brother Joe and sister Martha and I went to Penn Station and Crawford elementary schools. Having finished what was called the ninth grade, I went to live with my Aunt Olena Ford, and fin- ished Tupelo High School in 1921, then BA, University of Missis- sippi, 1925. I worked as the secretary and clerk in the Mississippi State Department of Archives and History (September 1925 to March 1929) and in the Mississippi Division office of Southern Bell Telephone Company (March 1929 to August 1930). I taught English and other subjects in Vina, Alabama, High School (August 1930 through January 1932).

    Susanna Clark March 11, 1939-June 27, 2012 Susanna Talley Clark’s talents transcended songwriting. She was a hit songwriter, an accomplished painter, and an extraordinary muse to many celebrated artists. During the 1970s, 80s, and 90s, Susanna hosted an artist salon in Nashville, where important characters of the growing Americana music movement gathered to share ideas and swap songs. In addition to her husband Guy Clark, Susanna inspired music luminaries Townes Van Zandt, Rodney Crowell, Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, Lyle Lovett, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Vince Gill, Carlene Carter, Jerry Jeff Walker and countless other writers and artists. Born in Atlanta, Texas in 1939, Susanna met songwriters Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt in the late 1960s. She moved to Houston with Guy in 1970. Later that year, Susanna and Guy moved to Los Angeles together and then to Nashville when Guy got his first publishing deal in 1971. Van Zandt came to Nashville to be the best man when Guy and Susanna married in 1972. He lived with them for the first eight months of their marriage. Guy and Susanna were married. Guy and Townes were best friends. Susanna and Townes were soulmates. Although Guy got most of the credit, it was Susanna who dreamed up and began writing the timeless songs “Black Haired Boy,” (about Townes), “Old Friends,” and “The Cape.” She brought lyrics and simple chords to Guy and he helped her finish them. Susanna and Townes co-wrote “Heavenly Houseboat Blues” and Townes recorded it on The Late Great Townes Van ​ Zandt. Susanna became the hit songwriter in Clark family when she wrote “I’ll Be Your San ​ Antone Rose and Texas artist Dottsy took the song to the Billboard Top 10 in 1975.
