Justin Townes Earle Returns with Kids in the Street
JUSTIN TOWNES EARLE RETURNS WITH KIDS IN THE STREET MAY 26th, 2017 VIA NEW WEST RECORDS BILLBOARD PREMIERES “MAYBE A MOMENT” VIDEO TODAY TO APPEAR AT STAGECOACH FESTIVAL THIS WEEKEND SPRING TOUR DATES WITH THE SADIES AS HIS BACKING & SUPPORT BAND ANNOUNCED “Justin Townes Earle’s Kids In The Street is his finest album to date.” UPROXX Justin Townes Earle is set to release his New West Records debut Kids In The Street on May 26th. The 12-song set was produced by Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, First Aid Kit) at his ARC Studios, and is the first time in his career that Earle has worked with an outside producer. Kids In The Street marks a decade into Earle’s recording career and follows his acclaimed companion albums Single Mothers (2014) and Absent Fathers (2015). The deeply soulful set is both emotionally riveting and effortlessly uplifting. Now embracing sobriety, marriage, and impending fatherhood, Earle is enthusiastically looking to the future. “Life has changed a lot for me in the last few years,” Earle reflects. “I got married and am getting ready to become a father, and this is the first record that I’ve written since I’ve been married. There’s definitely an uplifting aspect to this record in a lot of ways, because I’m feeling pretty positive.” He continues, “When I wrote songs in the past, I was looking in on what I was feeling, but this record’s more about looking outward on what’s happening, and writing about subjects like gentrification and inner city strife. -
Journal of Academic Perspectives
Journal of Academic Perspectives Religion, Politics, and Public Discourse: Bruce Springsteen and the Public Church of Roll Frederick L. Downing, Professor of Philosophy & Religious Studies, Valdosta State University and Jonathan W. Downing, Co-Director, Screaming Shih-Tzu Productions Abstract The thesis of this paper is that Bruce Springsteen’s art participates in a musical public square in which the outsider can come up close and overhear a dialogue that has been going on for centuries. Following the work of Robert Detweiler on religion and public life, this paper starts from the premise that the bard’s music, like literature, creates a type of public square or a form of public discourse where urgent matters of human survival, like the nature and nurture of a just state, are expressed, a call for social justice can be heard, and faith and hope for the future can be assimilated. Using the theory of Martin Marty on religion and civic life, the paper further describes Springsteen’s work as the creation of a “public church” beyond sectarian demand which is open to all and approximates, in his language, a true “land of hopes and dreams.” The paper uses the theory of Walter Brueggemann on the ancient church idea to demonstrate the nature and dimension of Springsteen’s “public church.” Using Brueggemann’s theory, Springsteen’s Wrecking Ball album is shown to have both a prophetic and priestly function. As a writer and performer, Springsteen demonstrates on this album and on the Wrecking Ball tour that he not only speaks truth to power, but attempts to create a sense of alternative vision and alternative community to the unjust status quo. -
Martin Cloonan Introduction an Attack on the Idea of America
MUSICAL RESPONSES TO SEPTEMBER 11TH: FROM CONSERVATIVE PATRIOTISM TO RADICALISM Martin Cloonan Introduction I want to propose something very simple in this paper: that the attacks which took place on 11 September 2001 were attacks on the very idea of America. This is not a new idea. It was cited by the New York Times soon after the attack and subsequently by the cultural critic Greil Marcus (2002). But what I want to add is that as time went on it became clear that the mu- sical responses which were made were defences of America. However, there were not uniform responses, but diverse ones and that is partly be- cause the idea of America is not settled, but is open to contestation. So what I want to do in the rest of this paper is to first examine notion that the attacks on 11 September were an attack on the idea of America, look briefly at the importance of identity within popular music, chart initial musical reactions to the events and then look at longer term reactions. An attack on the idea of America The attacks on 11 September were strategically chosen to hit the symbols of America as well as the reality of it. The Twin Towers symbolised American economic power, the Pentagon its military might. This was an attack on the psyche of America as well as its buildings and people. Both the targets were attacked for propaganda purposes as much as military ones. What more devastating way could have been found to show rejection of America and all it stands for? But the point I want to note here is that America itself is a contested notion. -

I remember holdin' on to you All them long and lonely nights I put you through Somewhere in there I'm sure I made you cry But I can't remember if we said goodbye. But I recall all of them nights down in Mexico One place I may never go in my life again Was I just off somewhere or just too high But I can't remember if we said goodbye. I only miss you every now and then Like the soft breeze blowin' up from the Caribbean Most Novembers I break down and cry Cause I can't remember if we said goodbye. I See Hawks in L.A. Release Their Tenth Album, on Our Way, New Directions Spun from Strange Times, Set for August 27 Release
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 26, 2021 I SEE HAWKS IN L.A. RELEASE THEIR TENTH ALBUM, ON OUR WAY, NEW DIRECTIONS SPUN FROM STRANGE TIMES, SET FOR AUGUST 27 RELEASE LOS ANGELES, Calif. — “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times” has earned its hoary immortality in Memeville. That’s how it was from February 2020 onward. That’s how it hit I See Hawks in L.A., who played their final live show at Ben Vaughn’s Wonder Valley Festival. The evening was charged, Ben and the Hawks (as ISHILA is otherwise known) pushing against the unknown at the edge of the desert night. I See Hawks in L.A. — who will release their first post-pandemic album, On Our Way, on August 27, 2021 — tell the rest of story in their own words: And then, well you know. Le lockdown. For I See Hawks in L.A., it was disruptive, but we’re drawn to disruption, we create disruption, it’s a creative source, and here it was handed to us writ large by global fate. How do little old us ride this floodwave? We dove in, digitally. Without ever playing music in the same room. As was near universal for musicians, reality was the all-embracing screen, cyber images that sang and played drums and guitar. Rob and Paul went on an uncharacteristically locked-in songwriting schedule, every Friday facetiming it at the crack of 4 p.m., quite a challenge (you can't play guitars at the same time) — but also an oasis from chaos. -

August 25, 2021 – Two incredible acts are teaming up for a fantastic night of music at Sweetland Amphitheatre Saturday, August 28th - Steve Earle & the Dukes and Los Lobos. Steve Earle & the Dukes Steve Earle is one of the most acclaimed singer-songwriters of his generation. A protégé of legendary songwriters Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark, he quickly became a master storyteller in his own right, with his songs being recorded by Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Joan Baez, Emmylou Harris, The Pretenders, and countless others. 1986 saw the release of his debut record, Guitar Town, which shot to number one on the country charts and is now regarded as a classic of the Americana genre. Subsequent releases like The Revolution Starts...Now (2004), Washington Square Serenade (2007), and TOWNES (2009) received consecutive GRAMMY® Awards. Los Lobos The journey of Los Lobos began in 1973, as the band earned their stripes playing revved-up versions of Mexican folk music in restaurants and at parties. The band evolved in the 1980s as it tapped into L.A.’s burgeoning punk and college rock scenes. Early on, Los Lobos enjoyed critical success, winning the Grammy® for Best Mexican-American Performance for “Anselma” from its 1983 EP And a Time to Dance. In 1987 with the release of the Ritchie Valens biopic, La Bamba, the quintet’s cover of Valens’ signature song topped the charts in the U.S. -
