“Notes on the Yuezhi - Kushan Relationship and Kushan Chronology”, by Hans Loeschner Notes on the Yuezhi – Kushan Relationship and Kushan Chronology By Hans Loeschner Professor Michael Fedorov provided a rejoinder1 with respect to several statements in the article2 “A new Oesho/Shiva image of Sasanian ‘Peroz’ taking power in the northern part of the Kushan empire”. In the rejoinder Michael Fedorov states: “The Chinese chronicles are quite unequivocal and explicit: Bactria was conquered by the Ta-Yüeh-chih! And it were the Ta-Yüeh-chih who split the booty between five hsi-hou or rather five Ta-Yüeh-chih tribes ruled by those hsi-hou (yabgus) who created five yabguates with capitals in Ho-mo, Shuang-mi, Hu-tsao, Po-mo, Kao-fu”. He concludes the rejoinder with words of W.W. Tarn3: “The new theory, which makes the five Yüeh- chih princes (the Kushan chief being one) five Saka princes of Bactria conquered by the Yüeh- chih, throws the plain account of the Hou Han shu overboard. The theory is one more unhappy offshoot of the elementary blunder which started the belief in a Saka conquest of Greek Bactria”.1 With respect to the ethnical allocation of the five hsi-hou Laszlo Torday provides an analysis with a result which is in contrast to the statement of Michael Fedorov: “As to the kings of K’ang- chü or Ta Yüeh-shih, those chiefs of foreign tribes who acknowledged their supremacy were described in the Han Shu as “lesser kings” or hsi-hou. … The hsi-hou (and their fellow tribespeople) were ethnically as different from the Yüeh-shih and K’ang-chü as were the hou… from the Han. -

'T GLOBAL CONTACTS: THE OPENING 25 OF THE SILK ROAD During the early Han dynasty (206 B.cE.-220 CE.) Chinese emperors began to send large amounts of silk-for both diplomatic and commercial reasons-to the nomads of Central Asia, especially the Xiongnu. Within a short time some of this silk found its way, by means of a type of relay trade, to Rome. Modern scholars refer to the East- West routes on which the fabric, and other commodities, moved as the Silk Road. By 100 CE. the land routes linking China to Rome also had a maritime counterpart. Seaborne commerce flourished between Rome and India via the Red Sea and the Ara- bian Sea. Other routes farther east, connected Indian ports with harbors in Southeast Asia and China. A great Afro-Eurasian commercial network had now come into being. Silk from China (the only country that produced it until after 500 CE.), pepper and jewels from India, and incense from Arabia were sent to the Mediterranean region on routes that ter- minated in Roman cities such as Alexandria, Gaza, Antioch, and Ephesus. In exchange for the precious commodities, the Romans sent large amounts of silver and gold east- ward to destinations in Asia. Because the long-distance trade of the classical period was mainly in luxuries rather than in articles of daily use, its overall economic impact was probably limited. Most present-day historians think that the Rome-India-China trade was significant pri- marily because of its role in promoting the spread of religions, styles of art, technologies, and epidemic diseases. -

Fairbank and S. Y. Journal of Asian Civilizations -1- From Northern Afghanistan to Xinjiang, Hellenistic influences in the history of a Yuezhi-Kushan burial Gianni Dubbini Abstract: In this essay an object in particular, that is the golden clasp with two Macedonian warriors from the Kushan site of Tillya Tepe, burial n° 3, will be discussed as a case-study. Using a comparative method, this artefact becomes clearly an example of cultural interaction with other sites, histories and objects along the Bactrian side of the Silk Road, till China. The Hellenistic, Central Asiatic, “nomadic”, and Chinese artistic and historical influences, will be here analysed in relation with a particular geographic area that is the Oxus Region between the conquests of Alexander the Great (4th c. B.C) and the early Kushan kingdom (1st c. A.D.). The area of Bactria, that has the river Oxus (Amu Darya) as a natural landmark and way of communication, saw during the period taken in consideration, an incredible and unique process of cultural assimilation and syncretism. This artistic syncretism of the ancient world clearly trespassed the traditional geographical and cultural barriers. I. The historical background of Tillya Tepe: the legacy of Alexander the Great in the Oxus region, and the city of Ai Khanoum until the Kushans (334 B.C- 1st century. A. D) Although it is a well studied subject (Briant 2010: 156-157), it is still interesting to summarize the history of the events that preceded the formation of the Kushan dominions of Northern Afghanistan in the area of Tillya Tepe (fig. 1). I will concentrate here the attention on the Greek military and cultural penetration into a specific region of Central Asia: Bactria. -

Genre and Empire: Historical Romance and Sixteenth-Century Chinese Cultural Fantasies Abstract Chinese historical romance blossomed and matured in the sixteenth century when the Ming empire was increasingly vulnerable at its borders and its people increasingly curious about exotic cultures. The project analyzes three types of historical romances, i.e., military romances Romance of Northern Song and Romance of the Yang Family Generals on northern Song's campaigns with the Khitans, magic-travel romance Journey to the West about Tang monk Xuanzang's pilgrimage to India, and a hybrid romance Eunuch Sanbao's Voyages on the Indian Ocean relating to Zheng He's maritime journeys and Japanese piracy. The project focuses on the trope of exogamous desire of foreign princesses and undomestic women to marry Chinese and social elite men, and the trope of cannibalism to discuss how the expansionist and fluid imagined community created by the fiction shared between the narrator and the reader convey sentiments of proto-nationalism, imperialism, and pleasure. -

Imagining Wu in the Han Aaron Zhao A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts University of Washington 2020 Committee: Patricia Ebrey Ping Wang Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Jackson School of International Studies ©Copyright 2020 Aaron Zhao 1 University of Washington Abstract Imagining Wu in the Han Aaron Zhao Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Patricia Ebrey Department of History This master’s thesis attempts to analyze the perception and understanding of the concept of wu 武 in the Han dynasty by exploring the relevant literary sources. It is divided into four subsections. In the “Institutional Promotions of Wu,” I explain how the Qin-Han legacy of military organization of the society makes wu a superior and desirable value. The order of honor by military merits, superiority of military offices in the governmental systems and even naming of certain offices using military terms reflect such promotion of the wu value. In the “Military Aristocratic Lineages” section, I demonstrate by tracing information scattered throughout various biographical records in the dynastic histories that some aristocratic lineages advanced or maintained their status mainly through military services. The “Martial Individualism” section explores the relationship between the individual and the state via their negotiation and struggle of power in using violence. This section is inspired and influenced by Sanctioned Violence in Early China. But one of the differences is that I note the possibility of a non-violent manifestation of wu. Lastly, the “Wu of Women” section analyzes two examples of women who display qualities of wu in the dynastic histories and 2 their significance. -

I certify that the intellectual content of this thesis is the product of my own work and that all the assistance received in preparing this thesis and sources has been acknowledged. 1 Abstract: The Kushans and the Emergence of the Early Silk Roads The Kushans were a major historical power on the ancient Silk Roads, although their influence has been greatly overshadowed by that of China, Rome and Parthia. That the Kushans are so little known raises many questions about the empire they built and the role they played in the political and cultural dynamics of the period, particularly the emerging Silk Roads network. Despite building an empire to rival any in the ancient world, conventional accounts have often portrayed the Kushans as outsiders, and judged them merely in the context of neighbouring ‘superior’ powers. By examining the materials from a uniquely Kushan perspective, new light will be cast on this key Central Asian society, the empire they constructed and the impact they had across the region. Previous studies have tended to focus, often in isolation, on either the archaeological evidence available or the historical literary sources, whereas this thesis will combine understanding and assessments from both fields to produce a fuller, more deeply considered, profile.
