A message from HARLAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Harlan Husky Families,

This week seemed to go by fast and these shorter periods of daylight are not helping. I hope that all of the kids transitioned back from the break easily. I personally found that it was harder for all three of my kids to transition back to school mode from this break. I truly appreciate all of the effort the kids, parents and teachers are making to keep it positive. However, think that it is important to acknowledge that this whole situation is difficult, but to remind my kids (and myself) that they can do hard things! Our Huskies sure have proven that they can and I am proud of them! I hope that you all enjoy the weekend!

Sincerely,

Alex

MATERIAL PREPARATION FOR STUDENTS

We have had a few requests for teachers to prepare materials weeks in advance for a variety of different reasons for students. Please know that this is often not feasible to do so far in advance due the many nuances involved in teaching. Teachers often make changes throughout a week as to what content will be covered or how it will be covered based upon student response and performance. Being able to predict weeks in advance with certainty as to what materials are to be used is challenging. Teachers will continue to plan and provide materials on a weekly or biweekly basis. We appreciate your understanding.

CHROMEBOOK DISTRIBUTION ***If you are picking up for a neighbor, friend, or pod, you MUST have a printed out copy of the confirmation email that was received by the other parent. You will not receive the Chromebook for another child(ren) without it.*** Just a reminder to let you know that Harlan staff will be conducting a drive thru pick up of the new technology on Monday, December 7th. We are using this opportunity to distribute Chromebooks only in order to keep the line moving quickly as possible. We are asking families to keep their previous school issue devices at this time. We can set up a different time to have devices brought to school if you prefer to not have multiple school issued devices. We are asking families to try and come during the time slot that correlates with the first letter of the student’s last name. This is simply to prevent long lines. If you are unable to attend during your assigned time slot, you may attend another.

I-M 10:00-11:00am E-H 11:00am-12:00pm

A-D 12:00-1:00pm

Drive thru pick up will also be available from 7:00-8:00am for any families that are unable to attend their assigned time slot. Please remember to do the following:

 Cars should turn right as they enter the parking lot, pass the main entrance to the school and pull around to Door #9 on the south side of the building (this is the door just past the library at school).  Post a sign with the first and last name of your child(ren) clearly in passenger side window.  Please print out the confirmation email that you should have received once you completed the Elementary Chromebook User Agreement Form found at this link. You will not recieve a Chromebook until this form is completed for each child in the .  If you are picking up for a neighbor, friend, or pod, you must have a printed out copy of the confirmation email that was received by the other parent. You will not receive the Chromebook for another child(ren) without it.  We will bring the device(s) to your car and you are cleared to leave once you have the device(s) in hand.

HALF DAY School will not be in session for our elementary students on Wednesday December 9th in the AM due to Professional Development for staff. Please have your student attend their PM classes 12:40 – 3:50 PM for BVA students and 1:20 – 3:50 PM for Hybrid students. Any classes prior to that time will not have any live Zooms or asynchronous work. The change was made to ensure the PM hybrid students were receiving the same amount of time with teachers as their AM counterparts.

MATERIAL PICK UP – PLEASE USE THE CODE Classroom teachers will be communicating with parents as to when materials will be available for pick-up in the vestibule. The vestibule should be accessed using the code provided by the teacher Monday – Wednesday 7 AM to 3 PM as well as Thursday and Friday from 7 AM to 7 PM. Please be prepared to use the code and not the doorbell when entering the building.

GLEE CLUB – 4TH & 5TH GRADE Calling all 4th and 5th graders! The Harlan Club will begin meeting in January because as they say…the show must go on! Please click here to see information about meetings, and instructions for signing up!

REPORT CARDS By now, all families should have received communication on how to access their child(ren)’s report card through the Power School Parent Portal. Just as a reminder, the elementary standards-based report card will only be visible to you when you log into the Power School Parent Portal using a web browser, such as Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Safari, and others. If you wish to access the card on a cell phone, you will need to do that through a web browser and not the PowerSchool app. Secondary families are able to use a mobile app to view grades and report cards, but this function of the app is not available for standards-based report cards. The report cards will be visible at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, December 7 through 7:00 a.m. on Monday, December 21.

DISTRICT NEWS INTRODUCING BPS GIVING WEEK: DECEMBER 7-11 A collaborative initiative throughout BPS, Giving Week offers all of us an opportunity to give back to our community, as we are each able, during this holiday season. Classrooms, families, and/or groups of friends can work together or contribute individually to support a wide range of organizations this holiday season. Click on the links or read the attached file for much more information. Then choose the project that speaks most to you:

 Schools Offer Support Family Gift Giving Drive – support 15 BPS families this holiday season. Gifts can be dropped off at any BPS school from now until December 11 and will be delivered to families on December 21. Visit the Sign Up Genius page to donate: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/409044eaeab2ba31- schools. Look for the bin marked SOS/Snack Pax in the Harlan vestibule to drop off items.

 Snack Pax for Detroit – We are collecting breakfast bars, fruit cups, apple sauce, fruit drink box or pouch, raisins (1oz boxes), plastic spoons, paper napkins, and #4 size lunch bags for children in need in the Detroit area. Drop off items in the vestibule at Harlan. Look for the box marked SOS/Snack Pax.  Moonbeams for Sweet Dreams – Follow the link to send both a virtual sweet dream message to kids at Beaumont Children’s Hospital, and to donate to their Moonbeams program. The virtual sweet dream message costs nothing! https://www.beaumont.org/health-wellness/moonbeams Since gathering in person with flashlights to send moonbeams cannot happen this year, Beaumont will be putting together gift bags for the children staying at the hospital over this holiday season. You can donate online or stop by Adventures in Toys in downtown Birmingham to purchase a gift for hospitalized children. Adventures in Toys can also manage your purchase over the phone at (248) 646-5550.  FLAG (Front Line Appreciation Group) – Support our local health heroes over this holiday season with your donation to FLAG’s meal program. Add BPS in the company name when making your donation, and our collective donation will provide a meal to health care workers at Beaumont Hospital-Royal Oak. https://www.flagmetrodetroit.org/  Letters for Seniors – join with BPS students from across the district in making the holidays a little less lonely for our seniors. Write a letter to our seniors at NEXT, Arden Court, The Baldwin House, or the Sheridan. Or draw a picture! These can be dropped off at Harlan or with your child's teacher. You may also send them directly to the center of your choice.

Thank you for supporting our BPS Giving Week initiative. Please contact Angie Righter, Harlan CSO, with any questions at [email protected] or (248) 203-3284.
