Warriors Leading Warriors

Katherine (K.C.) Luke Cureton the head golf coach for Sterling. As a player for the Warriors, Cureton started contributing his freshman year and improved every consecutive season. After his final year of eligibility, Cureton was named Honorable Mention All-KCAC.

In 2003, Cureton graduated from Sterling with a bachelor of science in business administration. Cureton then attended in Wichita, Kansas and obtained a master of education in sport administration in 2008. Luke married his wife Erin on Cureton and Erin reside in Sterling. May 31, 2008. Head Coach - Lonnie Kruse (31st Season)

Lonnie Kruse has completed 30 seasons as head coach of the Sterling College women’s basketball program. Under Kruse’s direction, the Lady Warrior basketball program has had 29 straight winning seasons, and has become one of the strongest women’s collegiate basketball programs in the state of Kansas and in the NAIA. Kruse has been named KCAC “Coach of the Year” eleven times: 1988- 89, 1992-93, 1994-95, 1995-96, 1996-97, 1998-99, 2001-02, 2003-04, 2007-08, 2009-10, and 2010-11.

The Lady Warriors have posted twenty 21+ win seasons, won the KCAC regular season title twelve times and have qualified fifteen times for the NAIA national tournament while under Kruse’s leadership. The women have also maintained a high in the top ten in career victories and winning national ranking, ending fourteen of the last percentage among current coaches in the seventeen seasons in the top twenty-five NAIA. Kruse is also the All-Time Winningest nationally. Women’s College Basketball Coach in Kansas History. Assistant Coach - Steve Crandall (27th Season)

Steve Crandall begins his 27th season as an assistant coach for the Sterling College Lady Warriors. In his tenure with the Lady Warriors, Crandall has served as the defensive mastermind for Sterling.

In the past seven seasons, Crandall’s defense has finished in the nation’s top 30 five times in Scoring Defense and and has finished in the top 10 in the same category twice.

Prior to coming to Sterling, Steve was the head basketball coach at South Barber High School in Kiowa, Kansas.

Assistant Coach - Katherine “K.C.” Bassett (4th Season)

K.C. Bassett enters her fourth season as head junior varsity coach, assistant varsity coach, and recruiting coordinator for the Sterling College women’s basketball program.

Before joining the coaching staff, she was a four-year starter and twice captain on Sterling College teams that finished with a combined record of 99-28 [78%], and won two conference championships and one KCAC tournament championship. Her teams made three trips to the NAIA National Tournament where they finished in the Sweet Sixteen twice and Elite Eight once.

K.C. began her playing career in 2003-2004 as KCAC Freshman of the Year and honorable mention All-Conference, and ended her senior campaign [2006-2007] as the KCAC’s Player of the Year and a third-team NAIA All-American. During her Sterling career, she was named to three KCAC All- Conference First Teams and earned NAIA Academic All-American honors, twice. K.C. is Sterling College women’s basketball’s all- time leader [549] and eighth all-time leading scorer [1,374].

K.C. resides in Sterling and, in addition to coaching, works as an instructor of exercise science for Sterling College.

#11 Julie Penner - 5’6” - Guard Whitewater, Kan. Julie Penner is a 5-6 senior guard out of Whitewater, Kansas.

During her junior campaign, Penner played in nine games, scoring a total of four points on the season. Penner also pulled down four rebounds and had three steals.

This season, expect Penner to play a limited role coming off the bench as a guard for the Lady Warriors.

Penner will wear #11 in both home and away uniforms this season.

#12 Kelly Curtis - 5’6” - Guard Great Bend, Kan. Kelly Curtis is a 5-6 senior guard out of Great Bend, Kansas.

As a sophomore, Curtis played in 31 games for Sterling College. On the season, Curtis averaged 1.6 points per game and 1.2 rebounds per game.

During her junior season, Curtis played in 30 games for the Lady Warriors. Curtis averaged 1.9 points per game and 1.1 rebounds per game for SC. Kelly had a breakout year for the Lady Warriors from the line, shooting 0.800 from behind the stripe.

Curtis is slated to be the starting point guard for the Lady Warriors in 2011-2012. Look for Curtis to control play on the floor, handling the ball in most situations for Sterling. As a starter, Curtis will have the opportunity to score more and should continue to be an effective rebounder for SC.

#35 Megan Patrick - 6’0” - Forward Hutchinson, Kan. Megan Patrick is a 6-0 senior forward out of Hutchinson, Kansas.

Patrick stepped right in as a freshman, playing in 33 games. During the season, Patrick averaged 9.9 points per game and 4.0 rebounds per game while shooting 0.386 from three-point range. Patrick was named All-KCAC Honorable Mention and was also a member of the KCAC All- Freshmen Team.

During her sophomore campaign, Patrick would have a historic year scoring the basketball by racking up 549 points, seventh most for a single season in Sterling history. Patrick averaged 17.2 points and 4.9 rebounds per game on her way to being named All-KCAC First Team.

#40 Jessica Todd - 5’6” - Guard/Forward Leavenworth, Kan. Jessica “Jess” Todd is a 5-6 senior guard/ forward out of Leavenworth, Kansas.

Todd has been a junior varsity player at Sterling and last season helped coach the junior varsity program.

At the conclusion of last season, Todd decided to strap the shoes back on to help with numbers on the junior varsity squad. After a summer of hard preparation however, Todd finds herself on the varsity squad this year.

Todd will come off of the bench for the Lady Warriors during the 2011-2012 season. Look for Todd to provide breaks for the SC guards and to provide senior leadership on and off the court.

Todd will wear #40 in both home and away uniforms this season.

Head Coach - Dean Jaderston (6th Season)

Head Men’s Basketball Coach Dean Jaderston begins his 6th season at Sterling. During his tenure at Sterling, the Warriors have finished no lower than 5th in the final season standings.

The 2011 Warriors used a late season run to win the KCAC Regular Season Championship and KCAC Tournament Championship, earning a trip to the NAIA National Tournament. This Warrior team was the first from Sterling to win both men’s basketball championships in the same season.

In 2009 the Warriors raised the bar, setting a single season school record with 21 wins and earning the KCAC regular season championship for the first time since 1995. The Warriors earned their 3rd trip to the NAIA national tournament in the last 8 years and were ranked as high as 17th in the nation during that stretch.

Coach Jaderston attended Crown College in St. Bonifacius, Minn. where he earned a double major in secondary history education and Bible and theology. Assistant Coach - Luke Cureton (4th Season)

Luke Cureton begins his fourth season as assistant coach for the Warrior basketball program.

Cureton is a former player with the Warriors, having played under former coach Tommy Desalme

After his playing career with the Warriors was over, Cureton went to Wichita State University where he earned is masters of education in sport administration.

Luke returned to Sterling where he took over head golf coach duties as well as being an assistant coach for the men’s basketball team.

Luke and his wife, Erin, reside in Sterling. Assistant Coach - Cecil Smart (3rd Season)

Cecil Smart enters his third season as an assistant coach for the SC Warriors men’s basketball program.

A former player under Coach Jaderston, Smart brings a charasmatic energy to the program as a coach and recruiter.

For the past two seasons, Smart has been the head coach of the junior varsity program but will pass off those duties this year to focus more on the varsity squad.

Cecil and his wife, Dee, reside in Sterling. Assistant Coach - Zach Goodrich (1st Season)

Zach Goodrich is a first year coach for the Warriors and will take over as the head junior varsity coach this season.

Goodrich will bring a wealth of knowledge about guard play to the Warriors as a former point guard under Coach Jaderston. Zach graduated from Sterling College in 2011.

While playing for the Warriors, Zach was a three time All-KCAC First Team member and was the 2011 KCAC Player of the Year. His senior year, Goodrich was also named to the NAIA All-America Second Team. Goodrich finished his career as the Warriors career leader in assists.

Zach resides in Sterling.

#11 Trent Stutzman - 6’0” - 160 lbs - Guard Hutchinson, Kan. Trent Stutzman is a 6-0, 160 lbs senior guard out of Hutchinson, Kansas.

Stutzman made an impact for the Warriors right away in his career, playing 31 games as a freshman and scoring 234 points that season. His freshman campaign, Stutzman averaged 7.5 points per game and shot 0.405 from behind the three point line. Trent was named to the KCAC All- Freshman team.

During his sophomore campagin, Stutzman increased his scoring output by scoring 257 points in 29 games for an average of 8.9 points per game. Stutzman would hit 59 shots from behind the three point arc as a sophomore.

As a junior, Stutzman had a historic year shooting the basketball. With 88 three point baskets on the season, Trent set the Sterling College single season mark for Randall C. #21 Cody Brazelton - 6’6” - 220 lbs - Forward Tuttle, Okla. Cody Brazelton is a 6-6, 220 lbs senior forward out of Tuttle, Oklahoma.

As a freshman, Brazelton played in 29 games, averaging 6.2 points and 3.4 rebounds per game. Cody was named to the KCAC All-Freshman Team.

His sophomore year, Brazelton played in 25 games, scoring 263 points for an average of 10.5 per game. Brazelton was able to increase his rebounding as well during his sophomore year, averaging 5.6 rebounds per game.

After missing a season, Brazelton returned for his junior year in 2010-2011. During that season, Brazelton was named to the All- KCAC First Team and an NAIA Third Team All-American. During the season, Cody averaged 14.7 points and 6.8 rebounds per game as the Warriors were both KCAC Regular Season and Tournament Champions.

Look for Brazelton to continue to be a matchup problem for defenders this season. With his 6-6 frame and strength, it will be nearly impossible to keep Brazelton from finding his way to the basket.
