9 September – 8 December 2017 PROFESSIONAL DANCE

classes residencies workshops dancebase.co.uk WELCOME Autumn Term 2017 Welcome to our always surprising and inspiring professional programme – full of newly embodied ideas and opportunities for the dancers and makers of the nation. This term we have a true legend coming to visit and personally the first and so possibly the most influential guru of mine: The great Lindsay Kemp will be in the house in October. Lindsay was mentor to many including Kate Bush and David Bowie – the latter even came to stay at the mad and glorious basement flat in Drummond Street here in whilst writing his album Hunky Dory. I was scullery maid and gin pourer but also a devoted student of Lindsay’s. His shows were like something from another fabulous, glittering, over-made-up planet. A planet I’ve been visiting regularly ever since! As well as this amazing news, we will be welcoming our new DEBS (graduate dancers) who will be mentored by Al Seed, one of our great Scottish artists of physical theatre. Add to this up to two free classes a week for professionals and countless residency showings on Fridays, and it all starts to add up to a pretty awesome Autumn. As always, I’ll remind you that our Friday afternoon showings by companies in residence are open to all and free to attend. I hope to see you there, as well as |at the Lindsay Kemp-led autumn showcase and our Youth Dance showcase at the Traverse in November.

It is a privilege to welcome the legendary Lindsay Kemp to Dance Base. Much has been said about his influence on seminal artists such as Bowie and Bush but we also acknowledge Lindsay’s ground-breaking work over the decades. Works that have radically, glamorously and intensely changed ways of seeing theatre, dance, art, life and gender. It was in the same Grassmarket that is now home to Dance Base that the exquisite and high camp classics such as Flowers, The Maids and the Turquoise Pantomime were premiered, in the first wild manifestation of the . Morag’s life was changed as a 15 year-old dance student at the Theatre School of Dance and Drama in the West End run by William Mowat Thomson, when Lindsay flew into the studio accompanied by dancer The Incredible Orlando (aka Jack Birkett), filling it with charisma, visceral life and colour and outrageous behaviour. Morag was invited to be part of that most outrageous and innovative company, and now, several decades later, Lindsay’s homecoming is rightly here at Dance Base, and now you can spend an entire week with the man Kate Bush dedicated the song Moving to. She said of him “It was incredible, I’d never seen anything like it, I really hadn’t. And I felt if it was possible to combine that strength of movement with the voice, then maybe it would work, and that’s what I’ve tried to do.” Brian Eno – “Lindsay was, is and always has been extraordinary.” Sir Alec Guinness stated “Lindsay Kemp is a great, repeat, great artist.” Lindsay is joined in the studio by the Italian ballet dancer Daniela Maccari, who will embody some of Lindsay’s vision during the week and is essential to the process. More details of both artists can be found on the website.

To Apply Participants must have more than three years’ professional experience in physical theatre or dance. The project will take place from Monday 9 to Saturday 14 October at Dance Base, 14–16 Grassmarket, Edinburgh EH1 2JU with a public performance of the work on Saturday 14 at 20.00. The project is FREE of charge and is part of Dance Base’s continued Professional Development Programme. Interested applicants must submit a CV and personal statement about why you would like to take part in the project to [email protected] and thereafter we will send to Lindsay Kemp for the final decision. RESIDENCY 11 – 15 SEPTEMBER Tides Lisa Fannen, Katsura Isobe, Jer Reid, Natasha Swingler, Solène Weinachter

As a collective we’ll be researching the interplay of projected film, dance/movement, live music & sampled sound, including spoken words. We’ll be using improvisation as a vital component of explorations that involves both social and political comment about, and a meditation on/celebration of water – its beauty and power, current related environmental destruction, and violence to indigenous people’s land/water/communities. We want to develop understandings of the relationship between different elements: what is it, for example, to move with/to/against film? What is it to dance with/to/against words; responding to both the sonic affect/pulse/pitch and the actual political/emotional content? The investigation will layer these elements and variables and examine them through structured scores. Company class I Tuesday 12 September I 10.00 – 11.30 The function and movement language of the fluid systems of the body. Short scores for improvisation with live music and video projection. Company showing I Friday 15 September I 16.00

Roberta Jean | mysteryskin

Roberta is developing new work for both digital and live performance spaces. Across these contexts, she’s looking at both similarities and differences between the experience of the performer and the audience. She says, “In my choreographic practice, I’m trying to explore and sculpt somatic experience and the poetic body whilst also trying to be conscious of how work is received. I would like to further explore the inner process of the dancer, sensations, biomechanics, emotion, as well as the audience’s perspective, how work translates, dramaturgy, the reading/engagement experience of the audience. Overall, I’d like to be more empathetic towards both performers and audiences and look at how this understanding affects my choreographic practice.”

As a Palestinian born in Al Yarmouk refugee camp in Syria, who now lives in Scotland and considers herself a citizen of the world, choreographer Farah Saleh feels the urge to tackle the refugee crisis taking place in Europe, and most recently in the US, through unearthing recent and past latent stories of refugeehood using the body as archive. During the residency she will start a physical research with two dancer refugees and herself, intertwining archive material, testimonies and imagination to re-enact, transform and deform the gestures of refugees and their latent stories. The research will result in an interactive performance lecture to experiment innovative ways of transmitting the archived gestures and stories into the bodies of the audience. Company class I Thursday 23 & Tuesday 28 November I 10.00 – 11.30 The class "Connect to expand and express" will explore the pelvis articulations, connections and movement initiations. We will start from small somatic exercises, then move to bigger and dynamic ones, to finish with a dance phrase that integrates the learnt connections, while adding physical states to each movement. Company showing I Friday 1 December I 16.00 Supported by: Creative Scotland (pending) Farah Saleh is a Dance Base Associate Artist

20 dancebase.co.uk RESIDENCY Image: Robbie Synge 20 NOVEMBER – 1 DECEMBER Ensemble (working title) Lucy Boyes and Robbie Synge

Lucy Boyes and Robbie Synge re-unite with performers Judy Adams, Damian Killeen and Christine Thynne. In this new phase, the group will be continuing to develop a series of performance actions representing or relating in some way to a rich catalogue of specific experiences and anecdotes from the past, and to aspirations or predictions for the future. With several years of working together as a tight group, this project reflects both an important shared time together, and strong individuality. Working time will principally involve developing already existing choreography, generating new material and exploring opportunities for performative approaches that allow a heightened liveness of encounter for the viewer. Company class I Tuesday 21 & Thursday 30 November I 10.00 – 11.30 With a focus on fluidity, function and ease of movement. Exercises and sequencing from company class will lead into improvisational movement scores, guided by themes of the work. Company showing I Friday 1 December I 17.00 Robbie Synge is Dance Base Associate Artist

Image: Daniela Rettore RESIDENCY 4 – 8 DECEMBER Himalaya C.ia Chiara Frigo

Himalaya is a solo work that stands for my comeback onstage after a long while. It is like coming back home, coming back to movement research and at the same time it is a way to explore new practices. I would like to investigate the concept of mountain as a fact, with its opposites: the airy top and the earthly base. Himalaya is inspired by the ‘Mountain’ as a universal archetype of what is sacred. Ever since the most ancient shamanic traditions, it has been the axis that sets directions in the organised space and connects the three worlds: divine, human, and the underworld. The climb to the top is the heart of every undertaking, and the connection between the base and the top is like closing the loop. This work will investigate how a choreography can turn into a ritual, using music scores by composers of the 20th century. Company class I Tuesday 5 December I 10.00 – 11.30 After a short warm-up session and the transfer of choreographic excerpts from the piece, the participants will be guided into their individual creative journey, setting off from the themes of the solo piece. The class is open to everyone who is experienced with movement work. Company showing I Friday 8 December I 16.00 Supported by: Zebra Cultural Zoo, A.C. Scenario Pubblico Compagnia Zappalà Danza, Centro Nazionale di Produzione della Danza (Catania) / CSC Centro per la Scena Contemporanea, Bassano del Grappa

0131 225 5525 21 RESIDENCY 4 – 8 DECEMBER Image: Mark Alesky Untitled Colin Poole

This residency is led by choreographer Colin Poole in collaboration with dance artist Charlie Morrissey. Together we are exploring ideas around identity and trauma. This research comes at a time of political uncertainty, Brexit, Trump, the refugee crisis and fears with regard to the 'Other'. Situated within this context we will explore how dance making sits within these concerns. We will investigate the nature of our responsibilities as artists and whether art has something unique to contribute to the wider conversation.

Company class I Thursday 7 December I 10.00 – 11.30 This company class is open to all levels of experience and draws on the Feldenkrais Method and contact improvisation to explore ways of moving into the unfamiliar and unknown. Company showing I Friday 8 December I 17.00 Supported by: The Place Choreodrome, Dance South East

Image: Luke Pell and Kitty Fedorec RESIDENCY 11 – 14 DECEMBER Associate Artist Research Luke Pell and Kitty Fedorec

Selkie Was a Sea Witch (or another dance from a white cis male, why bother?) Selkie was a Sea Witch. His fleece was white as snow. A couple of queers getting themselves in a fankle with sticky, slippery questions about going solo, oppression, authorship, autonomy, autism, ableism and choreography. From tall tales to tool use and tall tool users Luke Pell and long term collaborator Kitty Fedorec are at the beginning of something yet to take its shape. In a shame shed use of alliteration, nursery rhyme and nonsense poetry, myths and magics, folklore and science fictions, enchantment and entanglements, hybridity and hydrologic they will spend a small spell of daze, breaking binaries, teetering into transformations, skin steeling, soft lovings, the casual and causality. Muse the rider – rather than the ridden – and their poet writhe about with messy bodies and the wet stuff that lets us know we are alive.

Company class I Thursday 14 December I 10.00 – 11.30 Join us in an open playful space for a series of morning exercises that prepare us to listen, touch, move. Company showing I Thursday 14 December I 17.00 Luke Pell is Dance Base Associate Artist

22 dancebase.co.uk Dream Time Residency Image: Paul Michael Henry RESIDENCY 6 – 10 NOVEMBER

Stained and Staining Paul Michael Henry and Penny Chivas

A dance on film exploratory residency by Paul Michael Henry and Penny Chivas. This residency follows an initial film project by Paul and Penny entitled The Distance between my Eyes and the Back of My Head, made in 2016 and recently selected for Perth Dance Festival (Screen Awards). This was a collaboration between Paul, Penny, their bodies, the environment on location at a disused farmhouse, and film technology. We were excited by what we started to discover during it (even though it was done over one day and improvised on minimum budget), and we’re using the Dream Time residency to properly research the possibilities for collaboration into dance on film. Company class I Thursday 9 November I 10.00 – 11.30 Paul and Penny will draw upon and blend their somatic, yoga and Noguchi Taiso knowledge to offer a class that allows us to drop deeply into our body, awaken the senses and become aware of our movement possibilities for the day before opening out into some (hopefully outdoor) movement explorations taking our centred approach with us. Company showing I Friday 10 November I 16.00

New Work Al Seed

Al will use this residency to build a physical character which will then form the foundation for a future, full-length work of dance-theatre. Al's inroad into this character is the figure of the outcast-giant, a figure common to mythology and fairytales as well as popular culture. Al will explore how motifs of gigantism and being ‘out of scale/place’ play out in reference to his own physicality and movement vocabularies, and in relation to a variety of source materials. Company class I Thursday 23 November I 10.00 – 11.30 In keeping with the nature of the work Al will be conducting for his Dream Time residency, this class will blur the distinctions between dance and movement technique, devising skills, and improvisation. The class has two aims: to be fun; and to provide participants of all levels and backgrounds with a clear and simple set of tools with which to devise physical performance of all kinds. Key areas of focus will include: ‘listening’ as a fundamental performance tool, performance as game, spatial dynamics, and the physical mechanics of group movement. Company showing I Friday 24 November I 17.00
