  • The Effects of Digital Music Distribution" (2012)
Southern Illinois University Carbondale OpenSIUC Research Papers Graduate School Spring 4-5-2012 The ffecE ts of Digital Music Distribution Rama A. Dechsakda [email protected] Follow this and additional works at: http://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/gs_rp The er search paper was a study of how digital music distribution has affected the music industry by researching different views and aspects. I believe this topic was vital to research because it give us insight on were the music industry is headed in the future. Two main research questions proposed were; “How is digital music distribution affecting the music industry?” and “In what way does the piracy industry affect the digital music industry?” The methodology used for this research was performing case studies, researching prospective and retrospective data, and analyzing sales figures and graphs. Case studies were performed on one independent artist and two major artists whom changed the digital music industry in different ways. Another pair of case studies were performed on an independent label and a major label on how changes of the digital music industry effected their business model and how piracy effected those new business models as well. I analyzed sales figures and graphs of digital music sales and physical sales to show the differences in the formats. I researched prospective data on how consumers adjusted to the digital music advancements and how piracy industry has affected them. Last I concluded all the data found during this research to show that digital music distribution is growing and could possibly be the dominant format for obtaining music, and the battle with piracy will be an ongoing process that will be hard to end anytime soon.

  • Beth Hart Press Release
Beth Hart “Better Than Home” PRD 7451 BETH HART’S NEW ALBUM, BETTER THAN HOME, IS BETH-ER THAN EVER Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter, Beth Hart, has never sounded better (musically and spiritually) than she does on her new album, Better Than Home. When she sings clocks stop, hearts dance and neck-hair tingles…it’s that compelling! A Planetmosh critic said, “I was just blown away by Beth’s voice!” and American Songwriter proclaimed, “Beth’s tough, throaty voice…she uses that powerful instrument to best effect on dramatic, arena filling ballads.” Beth’s incredible voice is what moved guitar legends Jeff Beck, Slash, Joe Bonamassa and Buddy Guy to perform with her on records and in concert. She reached national attention with the hit single, L.A. Song (Out Of This Town), the single reached #6 in the Billboard Modern AC chart and #7 in the Adult Top 40 chart; subsequent album, Bang Bang Boom Boom, made it to #3 in the Billboard Top Blues Album chart and shortly thereafter, Beth was nominated for a Blues Music Award. Album collaborations with Joe Bonamassa, Seesaw and Don’t Explain, made it to the top (#1 and #3) of the Billboard Blues Albums Chart, to #8 and #22 on the Billboard Top Independent Albums Chart and into the Billboard 200. International audiences fell in love with her and rewarded her with two #1 singles in Denmark from albums Leave The Light On and 37 Days (recorded live). Her greatest validation as one of the defining voices of our time, came when her tribute (alongside Jeff Beck) to Buddy Guy on The Kennedy Center Honors special, received one of the only 2 standing ovations of the evening, led by President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle.

  • Patty Griffin Is Among the Most Consequential Singer-Songwriters Of
Patty Griffin is among the most consequential singer-songwriters of her generation, a quintessentially American artist whose wide-ranging canon incisively explores the intimate moments and universal emotions that bind us together. Over the course of two decades, the 2x GRAMMY® Award winner – and 7x nominee – has crafted a remarkable body of work in progress that prompted the New York Times to hail her for “[writing] cameo-carved songs that create complete emotional portraits of specific people…[her] songs have independent lives that continue in your head when the music ends.” 2019 saw the acclaimed release of the renowned artist’s GRAMMY® Award-winning 10th studio recording, PATTY GRIFFIN, on her own PGM Recordings label via Thirty Tigers. An extraordinary new chapter and one of the most deeply personal recordings of Griffin’s remarkable two-decade career, the album collects songs written during and in the aftermath of profound personal crisis, several years in which she battled - and ultimately defeated - cancer just as a similar and equally insidious disease metastasized into the American body politic. As always, Griffin’s power lies in how, as writer Holly Gleason observed in Martha’s Vineyard Gazette, “her songs seem to freeze life and truth in amber.” Griffin’s first-ever eponymous LP, PATTY GRIFFIN made a top 5 debut on Billboard’s “Independent Albums” chart amidst unprecedented worldwide acclaim – and later, a prestigious GRAMMY® Award for “Best Folk Album,” Griffin’s first win and second consecutive nomination in that category following 2015’s SERVANT OF LOVE. “A master class in vivid, empathetic roots music that’s both about taking responsibility for the choices we’ve made and surrendering to those made for us,” raved Entertainment Weekly.

1 I Heard It Through the Grapevine: The Effects of Online Word of Mouth on Music Sales By Elaine Chang An honors thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Science Undergraduate College Leonard N. Stern School of Business New York University May 2007 Professor Marti G. Subrahmanyam Professor Vasant Dhar Faculty Advisor Thesis Advisor 2 Abstract: Word of mouth (WOM) has always been one of the most credible and influential sources of information for a consumer. With the advent of the Internet, new mediums of communication, such as blogs and social networking sites, have opened up, allowing more consumers to gather WOM information more easily than ever before. In this study, I examine the usefulness of online WOM, particularly from blogs and social networking sites, in predicting sales in the music industry. I track the changes in online WOM for a sample of 108 albums for four weeks before and after their release dates, and use a linear regression and regression tree to examine the relative significance of online WOM variables on their observation date in predicting album unit sales two weeks after that date. I find that the volume of blog posts about an album is the most consistently significant measure, with each additional blog post corresponding to higher album sales. In addition, I found that greater increases in an artist’s Myspace friends week over week and higher average consumer ratings also corresponded to higher sales. Although evidence supports my hypothesis that online word of mouth can be an important predictor of sales, my study also found that traditional factors are still relevant – albums released by major labels and albums with a number of reviews from mainstream sources like Rolling Stone also tended to have higher sales.

  • Surviving the Charts a Research on the Influence of Label Size on Album Performances
Surviving the charts A research on the influence of label size on album performances. Wouter Derksen 10075070 Thesis Seminar Business Studies Academic year: 2013-2014 Supervisor: Frederik Situmeang Semester 2, Block 3 Abstract The music industry faced a lot of changes in the past ten years. Physical album sales extremely decreased and online album sales and streaming services increased extensively. The way we buy and listen to our favourite music has altered, affecting the influences labels have on album sales. It is important for labels to adapt their ways of making an album sell. During this research a combination of data on album lifespan and discography information per artist is used, acquired by using the Billboard Top 200 Charts and datasets from Rovi. We assessed the influence major labels have on album performances and how genre changes affect this relationship, by conducting regression analysis. As a result we found that as an artist it is more beneficial to be released through a major label since this leads to a longer album lifespan, higher peak rank and higher debut rank in the Billboard Charts. Genre changes in the new released product compared to the rest of the discography seem to lead to a higher peak and debut rank. I would like to thank Caroline Benelux for giving me the opportunity to do an internship at their office in Amsterdam and giving me insights in the music industry. Also many thanks to Michele Piazzai for supporting me with advice and helping me obtain the data used in this paper. 2 University of Amsterdam Introduction Every year over 30.000 albums are being released, just a few of these albums make it to the charts and sell successfully.

  • What Tune Does the Bluebird Sing? a Cross-Genre Examination of Twitter Usage
Wesley T. A’Harrah What Tune Does the Bluebird Sing? A Cross-Genre Examination of Twitter Usage Berklee College of Music, Valencia Campus 26 June, 2015 What Tune Does the Bluebird Sing? 2 ABSTRACT The music industry is home to some of the most famous people, groups and institutions in the world. As the evolution of mass media and social media continue to drive changes in the landscape of interpersonal interaction, musicians continually adopt new media in order to maintain social relevance, influence and dominance over competing media forces and, indeed, other musicians. Using Twitter data on 1000 musicians, cleaned from an initial web-scrape data pool of 3500 musicians, and summary online social metrics collected from Next Big Sound, this study seeks to identify trends and opportunities for musicians and music acts of different genres. Examining data on musicians from all Billboard- identified genres, representing several hundred music acts, the researcher critically discuss concepts of promotional differentiation through social media, relevance of social media to target market segments and demographics in light of several music act/musician case studies. Trends have been identified through the production of various data visualizations and methods of regression analysis. Notable findings include the 89.5% absence of classical musicians on Twitter accounts and an average following of Keywords: classical music, digital marketing, marketing, media, music business, musicians, new media, online social media, social media, Twitter What Tune Does the Bluebird Sing? 3 0.0 DEFINITIONS By the author General: Music act: an individual or group that performs under one name Musician: any member of a music act Reach: in the context of Twitter, the number of possible “impressions” (visible in Twitter Analytics) attainable within a given timeframe.
