The Effects of Digital Music Distribution" (2012)

Dechsakda [email protected] Follow this and additional works at: http://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/gs_rp The er search paper was a study of how digital music distribution has affected the music industry by researching different views and aspects. I believe this topic was vital to research because it give us insight on were the music industry is headed in the future. Two main research questions proposed were; “How is digital music distribution affecting the music industry?” and “In what way does the piracy industry affect the digital music industry?” The methodology used for this research was performing case studies, researching prospective and retrospective data, and analyzing sales figures and graphs. Case studies were performed on one independent artist and two major artists whom changed the digital music industry in different ways. Another pair of case studies were performed on an independent label and a major label on how changes of the digital music industry effected their business model and how piracy effected those new business models as well. I analyzed sales figures and graphs of digital music sales and physical sales to show the differences in the formats. I researched prospective data on how consumers adjusted to the digital music advancements and how piracy industry has affected them. Last I concluded all the data found during this research to show that digital music distribution is growing and could possibly be the dominant format for obtaining music, and the battle with piracy will be an ongoing process that will be hard to end anytime soon. -
Years and Years
Years and Years Years & Years are a three-piece synthpop band, founded in London. Years & Years’ music has been described as electropop, mixing R&B and 1990s house elements. The band’s first studio album,Communion , debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart in July 2015 and was the fastest-selling debut album of the year from a UK signed band. Their biggest hit single King reached number one in the UK Singles Chart in March 2015, and peaked within the top ten of the charts in Australia, Austria, Bulgaria, Denmark, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Ireland and Switzerland. Martha Kinn of Machine Management reflects on how Momentum made a difference to the rapid success of Years & Years. We were at a point where we’d reached the end of the line in terms of what we could do with our own resources. We had a real vision. We had a bit of a fan-base forming; they started to write amazing songs. We wanted to keep going independently. I remember the question (in the Momentum form) “where do you see the band in 3 years time”? We achieved that and more… Momentum funding enabled the band – then unsigned - to go on tour and campaign to further build their audience and profile. The vision was: To have a top ten single and album; to be commercially and creatively credible. We wanted to sell out Brixton. We ended up doing Brixton twice. Martha sees Momentum funding as giving the band additional space and time to develop – its sound, audience and profile – before being signed by a label: The funding gave us an extended life of independence. -
Art to Commerce: the Trajectory of Popular Music Criticism
Art to Commerce: The Trajectory of Popular Music Criticism Thomas Conner and Steve Jones University of Illinois at Chicago [email protected] / [email protected] Abstract This article reports the results of a content and textual analysis of popular music criticism from the 1960s to the 2000s to discern the extent to which criticism has shifted focus from matters of music to matters of business. In part, we believe such a shift to be due likely to increased awareness among journalists and fans of the industrial nature of popular music production, distribution and consumption, and to the disruption of the music industry that began in the late 1990s with the widespread use of the Internet for file sharing. Searching and sorting the Rock’s Backpages database of over 22,000 pieces of music journalism for keywords associated with the business, economics and commercial aspects of popular music, we found several periods during which popular music criticism’s focus on business-related concerns seemed to have increased. The article discusses possible reasons for the increases as well as methods for analyzing a large corpus of popular music criticism texts. Keywords: music journalism, popular music criticism, rock criticism, Rock’s Backpages Though scant scholarship directly addresses this subject, music journalists and bloggers have identified a trend in recent years toward commerce-specific framing when writing about artists, recording and performance. Most music journalists, according to Willoughby (2011), “are writing quasi shareholder reports that chart the movements of artists’ commercial careers” instead of artistic criticism. While there may be many reasons for such a trend, such as the Internet’s rise to prominence not only as a medium for distribution of music but also as a medium for distribution of information about music, might it be possible to discern such a trend? Our goal with the research reported here was an attempt to empirically determine whether such a trend exists and, if so, the extent to which it does. -

As rock journalism evolved in the 1960s and 1970s, so did two dismissive and misogynistic stereotypes about female fans: groupies and teenyboppers (Coates, 2003). While groupies were scorned in rock circles for their perceived hypersexuality, teenyboppers, who we can consider an umbrella term including boy band fanbases, were defined by a lack of sexuality and viewed as shallow, immature and prone to hysteria, and ridiculed as hall markers of bad taste, despite being driving forces in commercial markets (Ewens, 2020; Sherman, 2020). Similarly, boy bands have been disdained for their perceived femininity and viewed as inauthentic compared to “real” artists— namely, hypermasculine male rock artists. While the boy band genre has evolved and experienced different eras, depictions of both the bands and their fans have stagnated in media, relying on these old stereotypes (Duffett, 2012). This paper aimed to investigate to what extent modern boy bands are portrayed differently from non-boy bands in music journalism through a quantitative content analysis coding articles for certain tropes and themes. -

Subrahmanyam Professor Vasant Dhar Faculty Advisor Thesis Advisor 2 Abstract: Word of mouth (WOM) has always been one of the most credible and influential sources of information for a consumer. With the advent of the Internet, new mediums of communication, such as blogs and social networking sites, have opened up, allowing more consumers to gather WOM information more easily than ever before. In this study, I examine the usefulness of online WOM, particularly from blogs and social networking sites, in predicting sales in the music industry. I track the changes in online WOM for a sample of 108 albums for four weeks before and after their release dates, and use a linear regression and regression tree to examine the relative significance of online WOM variables on their observation date in predicting album unit sales two weeks after that date. I find that the volume of blog posts about an album is the most consistently significant measure, with each additional blog post corresponding to higher album sales. In addition, I found that greater increases in an artist’s Myspace friends week over week and higher average consumer ratings also corresponded to higher sales. Although evidence supports my hypothesis that online word of mouth can be an important predictor of sales, my study also found that traditional factors are still relevant – albums released by major labels and albums with a number of reviews from mainstream sources like Rolling Stone also tended to have higher sales.
