Zur Anlage oder Revision der im Grundbuch (terrier) eingetragenen Ver­ bindlichkeiten bedurfte es einer besonderen Genehmigung der königlichen Kanzlei, die gegen entsprechende Gebühren, sogenannte «lettres de ter­ rier» ausstellte. Nach deren Vorlage übertrug der örtliche Richter einer Vertrauensperson, meist einem Notar, die Vornahme der beantragten Arbeiten. Der so Beauftragte hieß commissaire cl terrier. (Patoux, Le faux, 141/142, n.) 2 Galoppe d'Armancourt geht auf das Angebot ein, läßt es aber, da er von M. de Moutonvillers erfährt, dieser habe auch nicht mehr be­ zahlt, bei den 300 livres Honorar bewenden. (Advielle, I, 523/524) 3 Der Taufschein der Pfarrei Saint-Nicaise in Saint-Quentin trägt das Datum des 24. November 1760. Außer dem Priester Museux unter­ zeichnen als Taufpaten der Gärtner Quentin Graux und Margueritte Divers, die anstelle ihrer Unterschrift ein Kreuzchen setzt. (Advielle, I, 1/2) 4 Morellys Code de la nature ou le veritable esprit de ses lois de tous temps neglige ou meconnu erschien anonym 1755 und galt all­ gemein als ein Werk Diderots. (Guerrier, Mably, 51) 5 Der Trauschein vom 13. November 1782 gibt Babeufs Alter mit 21 Jahren 11 Monaten an und das seiner Braut mit 25 Jahren 8 Monaten. Marie Langlet hatte damit die majorite parfaite, was ihr nach dem Gewohnheitsrecht der Picardie ermöglichte, ohne elterlichen Konsens zu heiraten. (Advielle, I, 14/15; Marion, Dictionnaire, 360) 6 Das von Urbain Domergue gegründete Journal de la Langue fran­ <;aise erschien seit 1784 in Lyon. 7 Einige der Wortschöpfungen Babeufs sind - trotz Fleurys gegen­ teiliger Ansicht - in der Umgangssprache lebendig geblieben. Dazu ge­ hören: prehension, subjugation, depopulation,egorgerie und terrorisme. Andere wie foudroyade, amoncelage, furorisme oder Eigenschaftswörter wie populicide und nationicide vermochten sich dagegen nicht zu behaup­ ten. (Fleury, Babceuf, 27) 8 In seinem Erstlingswerk La famille vertueuse (1767) bedient sich Restif einer Schreibweise, die der Aussprache der Worte möglichst nahe zu kommen sucht. In dem vermutlich 1785 entstandenen Glossographe nimmt er diese Gedankengänge auf und entwickelt seine Auffassungen 493 über eine Reform der Sprache und insbesondere der Rechtschreibung. (Restif de la Bretonne, Le Village, introd. de Funck-Brentano, p. 26, 29) 9 Der Ausdruck ist festzuhalten. Er zeigt ganz klar, daß Babeuf bereits entschlossen ist, den Schritt von der Theorie zur Praxis zu tun und zu versuchen, den Kommunismus aus der Utopie in die Wirklichkeit seiner Zeit zu übertragen. (Dommanget, Pages eh., 61, n; Thomson, The Babeuf plot, 7) 10 Der gleiche Gedanke findet sich acht Jahre später in Babeufs Brief an Charles Germain vom 28. Juli 1795. (Dommanget, Pages eh., 215) 11 Babeuf spricht aus eigener Erfahrung. Sein Arbeitgeber, der comte de Castt§ja, verweist ihn unmißverständlich an den Tisch für das gehobene Hauspersonal und putzt ihn, als er aufbegehrt, gehörig herunter. Babeuf scheint aus dieser Lektion nichts gelernt zu haben, denn die gleichen Schwierigkeiten ergeben sich für ihn im Umgang mit den Offizianten des marquis de Soyecourt. Zweimal, im Januar 1794 und im September 1795, muß er beim Distrikt Montdidier vorstellig werden, um die ihm geschul­ deten Gebühren zu erhalten. (Estienne, Inventaire sommaire ... t. 11, col. 351, 353) 13 Die Loge führte die Bezeichnung L'Heureuse rencontre. Es gab außerdem noch eine weitere Loge in Roye, den Temple du Silenee, deren Sitzungen in einem Flügel des Stadtschlosses stattfanden. (Les Nuits de Paris, 245) Die gleiche Beobachtung hatte Mably im Mai 1775 gemacht, als er feststellte, das Pack zeige bei seinen Ausbrüchen eher Fröhlichkeit als Wut. (Du com­ meree des grains, Coll. compl., t. XIII, 245) 17 Am 17. Juni 1789 hatte sich der dritte Stand der Etats generaux zur Nationalversammlung erklärt und am 29. Als er einmal seiner Frau eine hölzerne Sdmupftabaksdose schickt, fügt er hinzu: «Du hättest sicher lieber eine aus Silber gehabt; aber eine silberne Dose hätte mehr als 7 bis 494 8 Francs gekostet, und was das bedeutet, weißt Du, wenn man mit Schuldnern wie den Maury, Broglie und Soyecourt zu tun hat.» (Ad­ vielle, I, 64) 11 In seinem der Republik Genf gewidmeten Discours sur l'origine et les fondemens de l'inegalite parmi les hommes (1755) hatte Rousseau geschrieben: «J'aurais voulu naitre dans un pais ou le Souverain et le Peuple ne pussent avoir qu'un seul et m€:me inter€:t, afin que tous les mouvemens de la machine ne tendissent jamais qu'au bonheur commun.lO 10 Ein Artikel sieht vor, daß der «mit der Redaktion beauftragte sieur Babeuf» nichts ohne vorherige Absprache mit Audiffred und dessen vorgängige Billigung in das Buch hineinbringen darf. Historians, political commentators, and world leaders alike have advanced their own interpretations of the events of spring since the last shots were fired. What precisely ex- Communards believed this idea to be, however, has never been clear. This book addresses itself to this question. Through an exploration of the nature and content of French revolutionary thought from the years immediately following the Commune’s fall, it demonstrates that this idea was not a specific policy or doctrine. Rather, by extensively redefining familiar concepts and using their circumstances creatively, it was the idea of a distinct, united, and politically viable French revolutionary movement that activists sought to preserve. The relative success of these efforts, further- more, has significant implications for the ways in which scholars under- stand both the founding years of the French Third Republic and the nature of the modern revolutionary tradition. In the small hours of March , troops from the French Army marched into Paris. Their objective was the removal of a number of cannons that had formed part of the capital’s defence during the four- month-long Siege of Paris that brought to an end the Franco-Prussian War. News of the soldiers’ early morning arrival spread quickly through the working-class districts of Belleville, Buttes-Chaumont, and Montmartre where the artillery was being stored.

Au Moyen Âge, la ri- che abbaye de Saint-Germain-des-Prés dicte sa loi tandis que les étudiants se battent au Pré-aux-Clers. Pendant les guerres de religion, le premier synode national des Protestants se tient rue des Marais. Mais à la fin de la Renaissance, le faubourg Saint-Germain n’est encore que « l’égout et la sentine du royaume tout entier. Impies, libertins, athées, tout ce qu’il y a de plus mauvais semble avoir conspiré à y établir son domicile » (Théophile Lavallée, Histoire de Paris, 1853). 3 Il faut attendre les deux épouses d’Henri IV, Marguerite de Valois et Marie de Médicis, pour assister à la construction des premiers palais. Quant à celui des Tuileries, il va nécessiter un bac sur la Seine pour le charroi des matériaux. Une longue voie qui y mène en prend le nom et devient en 1722 l’artère vitale du quartier. Mais l’austère faubourg précède le noble faubourg, les monastères, les résidences patriciennes. Dans cet endroit dont la salubrité tranche sur le reste de la capitale, la Contre-Réforme place d’innombrables couvents tout au long du règne de Louis XIII.

    Public Opinion and Foreign Policy: British and French Relations with the Netherlands, 1785-1815 Graeme Edward Callister PhD University of York Department of History September 2013 ABSTRACT This thesis examines the interplay of public opinion, national identity and foreign policy during the period 1785-1815, focusing on three consistently interconnected countries: the Netherlands, France and Great Britain. The Netherlands provides the centrepiece to the study, which considers how the Dutch were perceived as a nation, a people and as a political entity, at both governmental and popular levels, in the three countries throughout the period. Public opinion is theorised as a two-part phenomenon. Active public opinion represents the collated thoughts and responses of a certain public to an event or set of circumstances. Latent public opinion represents the sum of generally-accepted underlying social norms, stereotypes or preconceptions; the perceptions and representations latently present in unconscious mentalités. The thesis examines how perceptions and representations of the Netherlands in all three countries fed into public opinion and, ultimately, into national identity either of the self or the ‘other’. It then investigates the extent to which the triangular policies of Britain, France and the various incarnations of the Dutch state were shaped by popular perceptions, identities and opinion. While active opinion is shown to have generally been of negligible importance to the policy-making process, it is argued that the underlying themes of latent opinion often provided the conceptual background that politicians from all three countries used to make policy. The influence of latent opinion was often as much unconscious as deliberate.

I declare that my thesis consists of 99,843 words. 2 ABSTRACT The thesis discusses the trajectory of the Belgian socialist thinker and activist Hendrik de Man (1885-1953) between 1914 and 1936 ca, with particular attention to his endeavours to renew Western European social democracy after the Great War. The first half of the thesis deals with de Man’s theoretical evolution. Having become convinced of the inadequacy of orthodox Marxism as a conceptual framework for the Left while serving as soldier and diplomat during WWI, de Man sought to overcome the split between reformism and revolutionary socialism by developing an ethical conception of socialism outlined in the book Zur Psychologie des Sozialismus (1926) and, subsequently, by elaborating planism, a democratic socialist ideology supposedly more in tune with the socio-economic conditions of the 1930s.
