We thank everyone for their support. 4 5 4 Messages Message from the EBC Welcome to “Ready For A New Partnership”, the 2018 Report of the European Business Council in Japan (EBC). Just as previous years have been exciting so has 2018 in regards to the Europe-Japan relations. This was the year when the EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) was finally signed. Europe has now two distinct agreements with Japan: the Switzerland-Japan Free Trade Agreement and the EU-Japan EPA. The importance of the EPA to both EU and Japanese business is enormous. From an EU perspective, it promises to boost exports in sectors such as food products, clothing and shoes, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, vehicles and machinery. The result will be increased growth and more jobs, not only in companies that already have a presence in Japan but also in those entering this market for the first time thanks to the EPA. The benefits will be felt

Premier Grand Cru Classe in 1855 & in 1973 Website http://www.chateau-mouton-rothschild.com/ General Info Château Mouton Rothschild, owned by Baroness Philippine de Rothschild and her children, is regarded as one of the world’s greatest wines. The story of Mouton Rothschild is that of a magical combination of soil, climate and devotion of one man, Baron Philippe de Rothschild (1902-1988), Baroness Philippine’s father. In 1853, Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, from the English branch of the family, bought Château Brane-Mouton and immediately renamed it in Mouton Rothschild. Baron Philippe de Rothschild, when he took over the estate in 1922, decided to devote his life to it and to make Mouton unique, producing the very best wine. In 1924, he was the first to introduce entire chateau bottling. In 1926, he built the majestic 100-metre barrel hall. In 1945, to celebrate the liberation of France, he had the idea of crowning the label of that year’s vintage with a V for Victory. Since then, a different label is created for each vintage by famous painters. In 1962, he opened the Museum of Wine in Art. In 1973, he obtained the revision of the 1855 classification so that Mouton would be officially recognized as a First Growth. Winemaker Philippe Dhalluin Vintage In 2016, there were two main trends in the weather as we experienced it in Pauillac: – a very wet winter and spring: more than half of the annual rainfall came in the first four months of the year, including a record 240 mm in January; – an extremely dry summer and autumn without any significant rainfall, resulting in a water deficit at the end of the year.

    The Rothschild Bibliography Caroline Shaw of The Rothschild Archive describes her attempts to chart the family’s countless ventures into print The ‘Dunottar Castle’ from the cover of Three weeks in South Africa by Ferdinand de Rothschild Has there ever been such a family as the Rothschilds for getting into print? For me, after working on this project for two years, the question is coloured by a mixture of wonder and exasperation. Will they never stop publishing? Of course, one hopes not; but is there to be no rest for the bibliographer? It has been a long-standing goal of The Rothschild Archive to compile a bibliography of publications by members of the Rothschild family and now, 1,840 entries by fifty-one individuals further on, we are perhaps ready to acknowledge that critical mass has been reached whilst accepting that completion may never be achieved. The initial motivation for producing The Rothschild bibliography was a desire to bring some kind of intellectual order to this not insignificant aspect of the activities of the Rothschild family. It has been a mapping of a wide and diverse terrain and revealed some previously uncharted areas. Beyond this, and the greater insight allowed into the lives and interests of many members of the family, the bibliography has brought some other benefits to the Archive. New acquisitions have followed from our greater knowledge and awareness of the publications; and the ever-expanding database of references has also built up into a guide for locating material, whether held at the Archive or at another institution.

    Cherry Blossom in the Yoshiwara by Yoshikazu PICTURES OF THE FLOATING WORLD An exploration of the world of the Yoshiwara, 吉原 PICTURES OF THE FLOATING WORLD In the nightless city Floating free from life’s cares Picture memories Haiku Keith Oram INTRODUCTION Japanese woodblock prints that recorded the Ukiyo, the ‘Floating World’ of the Yoshiwara of Edo city were so numerous that during the nineteenth century they were used to wrap ceramics exported to Europe. This practice provided some European artists with their first proper encounter with these beautifully created images. The impact on western art of their bold colours and sensuous line was quite significant influencing many artists of the avant gard. The story of those prints, however, began much earlier in the seventeenth century. First a little background history. The battle of Sekigahara in 1600 and the fall of Osaka in 1615 allowed Tokugawa Ieyasu to gain complete control of Japan. He had been made Shogun, supreme military leader, in 1603, but the fall of Osaka was the final action that gave him complete control. Almost his first act was to move the capital from Kyoto, the realm of the Emperor, to Edo, now Tokyo. This backwater town, now the new capital, grew very quickly into a large town. Tokugawa Iemitsu, Shogun 1623-51, required the daimyo of Japan, local rulers and warlords, to remain in Edo every other year, but when they returned to their fiefs he made them leave their families in the capital. This ‘hostage’ style management, sankin tokai, helped to maintain the peace. The other affect was that the daimyo needed to build large homes in Edo for their families.

    ` We are delighted to present to you a first-rate selection of wines, our aim is to ensure that whatever your personal taste and favourite style, every wine featured will be of the highest quality. The Five Arrows Hotel was built in 1887 as part of the Waddesdon Estate by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild, due to this close connection to the Rothschild family, a large proportion of our wine list comes from Rothschild vineyards from around the world. However, just because much of our wine carries the Rothschild name, it does not mean that it all comes at a high price, we have developed a list that we believe also represents good value. The Rothschild’s have been associated with the world’s greatest wines for almost a century and a half. I was sorry to lose the beautiful lake view, but I found it necessary to remove to the northern quarter of the city, into a very quiet Street behind the mouldering castle. My new home is a katchiu-yashiki, the ancient residence of some samurai of high rank. It is shut off from the street, or rather roadway, skirting the castle moat by a long, high wall coped with tiles. One ascends to the gateway, which is almost as large as that of a temple court, by a low broad flight of stone steps; and projecting from the wall, to the right of the gate, is a look-out window, heavily barred, like a big wooden cage. Thence, in feudal days, armed retainers kept keen watch on all who passed by—invisible watch, for the bars are set so closely that a face behind them cannot be seen from the roadway.
