A Message from the Rabbi

From the Palais des Festivals de Cannes on the French Riveria to Carnegie Hall on the Isle of Manhattan to fan packed stadiums throughout America and Europe legendary Grammy nominated artist Ben Sidran has graced many prominent stages.

Ben has recorded, produced, and played with some of today’s greatest musicians including , , Carole King, , , , and Dr. John.

I am proud to announce a Temple Sinai exclusive. On Friday June 30, 2017 after the conclusion of our 7:30 p.m. services, around 8:15 p.m., we will welcome Ben Sidran (declared by Downbeat Magazine the “voice of his generation”) to Hampton Roads for a wonderful talk with piano stylings on his latest work “Jews, Music and the American Dream”.

For over 4 decades Sidran has been showered with acclaim and awards as a performer, producer, journalist, broadcaster, teacher and writer for such prominent outlets as PBS, NPR, and VH1. Dr. Sidran holds a Ph.D. in American Studies and is the author of four books including Talking Jazz.

I first had the privilege of meeting Ben in St. Louis when I hosted him as part of a musical series in partnership with public radio. He was just in the final stages of completing his delightful book which surveyed the music scene from Tin Pan Alley and Irving Berlin to Bob Dylan and beyond. It was an unforgettable musical evening.

I know that all our friends and family at Temple Sinai and music lovers in the community at large will be delighted. So please spread the good news. For parents, don’t worry, we have arranged for childcare so you can step out that night.

I would like to acknowledge the kind support we received from the UJCVP Endowment. Our thanks also go to Natalie Joseph of the Daily Press for being part of this special program.

I can’t wait to see you there!

B’Shalom, Rabbi Severine Sokol
