Study Smarter

This School Year s children across the country trade in their beach ba0gs for backpacks, Kumon—the world’s largest after-school math and reading program—wants A parents to know that the way their children study is just as important as the amount of work they study. That’s why Kumon doesn’t just help develop a solid foundation in math and reading. It also helps children learn how to learn. The individualized program cultivates important work and study skills necessary to succeed in today’s world. The objective of Kumon is to instill in students the skills and mindset for self- learning. Through daily practice, students increase confidence, improve con- centration and develop better study skills. It’s important to remember that a child doesn’t necessarily need to study harder or for longer hours. Instead, children just need to study smarter. Devel- oping study habits that go beyond what is done in the classroom goes a long way to ensuring academic success. Here are practical tips that will help your children study more effectively this school year.

Back-to-school is the perfect time to advance your children’s academic skills. To make the transition from vacation to classroom a smooth one, the eleven Kumon Math and Reading Centers of Las Vegas and Henderson offer a free, no-obligation placement test for children age 3 through high school. Founded in 1958, Kumon celebrates over 60 years of serving children worldwide. Kumon has over four million students enrolled at nearly 25,000 learning centers in 50 countries and regions. SHPS_ParentsGuideofLasVegas_Aug19_3.625x4.625.inddParentsGuideLV.com 1 7/15/19 9:49 AM August 2019 13 ummer break is a great time for most kids and families. It is packed full of adventures, fun, vacations, limited Sdemands, pool days, parks and late nights. Just as you and your child have adjusted to this way of life, summer comes to an end and it’s time to get into a new schedule and the demands of school. There are sev- eral things that you could do to prepare your family for the School transition back to school such as: 1. Beginning afternoon or early evening “study” times to practice the homework routine. 2. Creating goals for the school year. Prep 3. Scheduling a time to get to know your child’s teacher. 4. Stocking up on household basics and school supplies. 5. Standardize meal and play times.

Help Your One of the most important things to prepare for this change in lifestyle is resetting your child’s sleep pattern to Family Transition match what is needed for their age. Did you know grade school-aged children can require up Back to School to 12 hours of sleep per night? Behavior Essentials would like to share their top tips on reestablishing a good bedtime routine for your child.

1. Gradually adjust sleep and wake schedules about two weeks before the start of school. This will help setting their biological clocks to the new schedule. 2. Keep a regular bedtime even on weekends. This makes sure kids are getting enough sleep. It also keeps their circadian rhythms regulated. 3. Your kids should have a relaxing bedtime routine that is age appropriate. This helps kids wind down. The rou- tine should be the same every night so they associate all steps with sleep. 4. Create a sleep environment that is cool, quiet, dimly lit, and comfortable. 5. Electronics should be kept out of the bedroom. This included video games, televisions, computers, and cell phones. It has been proven that use of electronics before bed can lead to poor sleep. Eliminate exposure to electronic media within an hour before bed. 6. Make sure your kids eat well and exercise regularly. Both these things promote sleep. Exercise should be avoided within three hours of bedtime. 7. Model good work, rest and sleep habits.

If your family is having difficulty adjusting to the new rou- tine, behavior experts from Behavior Essentials can help by creating an individualized behavior plan for your child in the comfort of your home. We are also skilled at creating plans for more listening/following directions, picky eaters, maximizing productively and cooperation during home- work time, increasing appropriate sibling interactions, and decreasing screen time. Call us at 1-800-292-6224 to set up a no-obligation, com- plimentary initial consultation.
