After a very wet March in Sydney, the weather was perfect for a busy month of showing in April. Once again, exhibitors joined in the razzamatazz of the Sydney Royal (while enduring its inconveniences and the appointment again of FCI non-Dachshund specialist judges!). By the end of April, the first 6 of the 13 shows nominated for the 2017 Point Score Competition had been completed and the results are included in this extra-large edition of the Low Down.

One week before our two Easter Championship Shows, the Club was advised that Katherine Herrington, the UK judge appointed for the Easter Sunday show, was unable to meet her commitments. Fortunately, Per Lundstrom, the sighthound specialist visiting from Sweden who had accepted our invitation to judge the Dachshund of the Year final of the 2016 Point Score Competition at the Easter Friday Championship Show, agreed to take over while the UK judge appointed for the Friday show, Mini Wire breeder Nora Price from the UK, agreed to judge on Sunday instead. We were able at the last minute to engage the services of visiting Irish all-breeds judge and hound specialist, Marie Bailey, to officiate at the Dachshund of the Year 2106 runoff prior to the commencement of the Championship Show on Friday. There was a record entry of 154-5 at both championship shows. Many thanks to members who assisted with preparing and setting up the ring, transporting and entertaining the judges, providing refreshments, etc. Special thanks to Helen Topalov for her great photos and to Judy Phillips and her helpers for raising $245 from the easter egg raffle and $432.50 from the Dic-A-Dac table. All proceeds are being put towards the Dachshund National to be hosted by the Club at the St Ives Showgrounds next Easter.

All members are invited to attend the General Meetings which are held bi-monthly in February, April, June, August, October and December on the second Wednesday of the month at the meeting room at the Dundas Sport & Recreation Club, 9 Elders Road, Dundas. The Annual General Meeting is held on the second Wednesday in August.

CH COGGLYN BRIGHT SPARK KANICHEN DACHSHUNDS owner / breeder / handler - Pat Thomas At its last meeting, the Dachshund Club of NSW Inc agreed to advise the Australian National Kennel Council through the National Dachshund Council that it would not support the recognition of Kanichen Dachshunds in Australia. Such Dachshunds are a smaller size than the Miniatures that we have in Australia. They are recognised by FCI countries where they are differentiated by measuring from behind the elbows at 15 months of age, Kanichens being not less than 30 cms, Miniatures not less than 35 cms and CH TARRANGOWER TIBBEROO Standards over 35 cms owner / handler - Gillian Tompkins breeder – Douglas McKay The reason for the ANKC request is that at present, Australia does not recognise the Kanichen Dachshund for registration purposes. Under FCI rules, this non- recognition prevents ANKC registered judges from judging General Specials at FCI shows. ANKC Judges, if approved by the FCI, can judge the Dachshund breed at FCI shows but they are not allowed to judge General Specials.

The National Dachshund Council is strongly against recognising the Kanichen Dachshund in Australia because to do so CH LAURIETON DEVINE MISS M (AI) would put Australia in conflict with the owner / breeder / handler - Judy Poulton Kennel Club London 1994 Breed Standard which was adopted by the ANKC and Dachshund Breeders in Australia in 2009. As you are aware, this standard only recognises two sizes of Dachshund, the standard size and the miniature size.
