THE DACHSHUND UNIQUE ORIGIN: the Word “Dachshund” Is German
THE DACHSHUND UNIQUE ORIGIN: The word “Dachshund” is German and means “Badger Dog” or “Badger Hound.” They first appeared on the scene in the 15th Century. Its name is pronounced “Dock-sun” not “Dash-hound.” They were bred to hunt and chase down badgers and to burrow and dig quickly. Dachshunds also would work in packs and bring down deer and boar. They are considered the national dog of Germany; however, they actually lost their popularity in World War I because of their German origin. The first Dachshund dog show was in England in 1859, and they were a favorite of Queen Victoria. PERSONALITY: The Dachshund is playful, clever, brave and determined. They can display independence and be stubborn. Dachshunds usually bond more closely with one individual in the family. It’s their instinct to dig and burrow so you’ll often find them burrowed in blankets and under the covers in your bed! Children and Dachshunds make great companions; however, you must teach them how to properly play with this little dog as they have a tendency to have back problems and it can be exacerbated if they are handled incorrectly. They have a keen sense of smell and will wander off if they pick up an interesting scent. Dachshunds have such a loveable spunk and make great pets. They are very social animals and want to be around their family at all times. APPEARANCE: According to H.L. Mencken, “A Dachshund is a half-dog high and a dog-and-a-half long” – they are long and low to the ground. -

We are in the midst of unprecedented and uncertain times with the spread of the Covid-19 virus. Taking all this into consideration, the Board has decided to not require clubs to hold an ASFA field trial in 2020 in order to maintain their status with the ASFA. See ASFA Constitution Article II Section 4. Termination of Membership. Each club can individually decide whether they wish to hold their field trials. -

2019 LURE COURSING MTG – ATTACHMENT 5d Submission to allow the Peruvians Hairless Dogs to run as Sighthounds in Lure Coursing. Peruvians have been Lure Coursing in South Australia since the formation of the South Australian Lure Coursing and Racing Club in 2014. We have been running as CAT dog but have been gaining sighthound scores. We have a Peruvian with a coursing title and plan to take two others to their titles soon. As we believe our breed is a Primitive Sighthound it seems logical to race them as such and enable them to compete and run with other Peruvians in tandem races. On observation the Peruvian courses in a similar way to other primitive hounds and has exactly the same action and drive that is needed to course over rough terrain that is seen in dogs such as the Afghan and Saluki. I have spoken to Lure Coursing Judges who have judged Peruvians coursing and below are some of their comments. When having the pleasure of judging the Peruvian in Adelaide at Lure Coursing I observed that the breed showed the same tendency as a sighthound both on watching and observing where the lure was going and also the running and speed of this breed. They were very attentive to what was around them when it came to the course. Agility for the speed of the dog was very precise with constant watch on the lure, as a sighthound does. To this end, a total of 41 (18 male and 23 female) Tazi dogs was analyzed with the Minitab 16 statistical software program using ANOVA and Student’s t-Test. Descriptive statistics for live weight 18.4±0.31, withers height 62.0±0.44, height at rump 62.1±0.50, body length 60.7±0.55, heart girth circumference 63.9±0.64, chest depth 23.1±0.21, abdomen depth 13.9±0.21, chest width 17.4±0.25, haunch width 16.4±0.18, thigh width 22.3±0.26, tail length 45.7±0.37, limb length 38.9±0.31, cannon circumference 10.2±0.11, head length 24.0±0.36 and ear length 12.8±0.19 cm respectively. -
About the Breed and the International Silken Windhound Society (ISWS)
I N T E R N A T I O N A L S I L K E N W I N D H O U N D S O C I E T Y ABOUT THE BREED FOUNDER AND THE ISWS Out of the childhood aspiration of a 5 year old who wanted to become a veterinarian after her parents purchased their first Borzoi in 1953, Francie Stull took the first steps on a journey that would culminate in the remarkable challenge to develop a new breed, the Silken Windhound. After spending her senior year in high school as a foreign exchange student in Italy, Francie came home to pursue her study of animals. Her passionate love for and admiration of horses and dogs became the primary focus of her studies. In 1969, Francie and her husband Chuck purchased their first Borzoi, which was the beginning of the Kristull Borzoi Kennel. Her sister, Jackie, also captivated by the beautiful Borzoi, shipped Francie three lovely Borzois from Holland, Germany, and France to add to the two-finished American Champions Francie had purchased earlier. For the next twenty-five years, Kristull Kennel produced some of the finest Borzois in the United States. Two hundred and nine (209) of the Kristull dogs who were all owner and/or breeder handled garnered championships. Since the emphasis was on breeding dogs with all the characteristic elements that would encourage their owners to show them, Francie did not keep a record of the dogs that won their championships with professional handlers. Between 1970 and 1995, Francie produced 40+ litters of Borzoi and Scottish Deerhounds and participated in dog shows from Canada to Peru. -

Where do they come from? How did they become as they are? Since when have they existed ? These are all questions that are often asked. While we know the antecedents of some more or less recent sighthound breeds, the ancient breeds keep the secret of their origins. This is the case with the Egyptian tesem or sighthound, and also with the Asian sighthound – known as "sloughi" when it is completely shorthaired and "saluki" when it is shorthaired with feathers on ears and tail. (Since we lack the possibility of describing the sloughi and the saluki under the same name, even though zoologically they are the same breed and have shared the same history throughout several millennia, the term sloughi, used here for convenience, should mostly be understood to mean Asian sighthound.) Since the tesem and above all the sloughi are represented amongst the ancestors of almost all sighthound breeds, it must be concluded that these breeds will only truly be understood once the mystery behind the origins of the tesem and the sloughi has been elucidated. Various cynologists have taken an interest in this question. Cornevin, a teacher at the French veterinary college in Lyon at the end of the 19 th century , when listing dolichomorphic 1 canine breeds with erect ears , notes that, independently of domesticated podenco type breeds, this group in fact includes two wild species, the dhole 2 and the cuberow 3. -
