WHITESNAKE: the Purple Album It's only rock & roll | Pep Saña | Actualitzat el 09/09/2015 a les 00:01 WHITESNAKE: The Purple Album Quan una banda arrenca el concert d'aquesta manera, no tens cap mes remei que treure bandera blanca i rendir-te incondicionalment, perquè el que t'espera a partir d'aquí es un no respirar, una descarrega de clàssics i una lliçó magistral d'actitud i rock'n'roll. Whitesnake - Burn/), Stormbringer/ Burn (Live...In The Still Of The Night) V?deo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDgj59hKj1M El per què d'aquest disc ara: La mort del teclista de Deep Purple Jon Lord el 16 de Juliol de 2012 va fer que Glenn Hughes revifes la idea que van tenir amb Coverdale i Lord de reunir la coneguda com a Mark III de Deep Purple, que havia estat rebutjada feia anys per Blackmore (ni tan sols els va contestar). Aquest Mark III és una de les formacions més mítiques de Deep Purple, i amb aquests dos músics van gravar els àlbums Burn i Stormbringer, tots dos de 1974, molt aclamats per públic i crítica, i Come Taste The Band, ja sense Blackmore al capdavant, que estava ja immers en Rainbow (Tommy Bolin el va substituir). Després d'aquest àlbum, Deep Purple es va separar al 1976 fins a 1984, en què la Mark II (la favorita dels fans, i la més clàssica) va tornar a donar-li vida. David Coverdale mes endavant, va poder parlar amb Ritchie Blackmore sobre la reunió de Deep Purple i aquestes van ser les seves paraules: ?La tràgica mort de Jon va fer adonar-me que la vida és molt curta com per estar enfadat i amb ressentiment, per això em vaig decidir a contactar amb Ritchie per compartir la pena per la pèrdua, i també per agrair-li l'haver confiat en mi per ser la veu de Deep Purple?. Segons Coverdale, ?durant la conversa parlem de reunir-nos d'alguna manera, com va ser el desig de Jon. Però després de diverses discussions amb el manager de Ritchie (la mare de Candice Night, dona de Blackmore), vaig sentir que no compartíem la mateixa visió del projecte?, lamenta Coverdale, ?Blackmore va acabar rebutjant amb molt respecte l'oferta, i desitjant-los el millor?. Blackmore continua immers (i ja fa 20 anys) amb la seva dona i cantant Candice Night en la seva banda Blackmore's Night, fan una barreja de folk rock i rock medieval, de bastant èxit per cert, però molt allunyat del hard rock. Aquest intent de reunió va ser la llavor del que ha acabat sent el disc de Whitesnake, The Purple Album, en el qual Coverdale ha tornat a gravar amb la seva actual banda alguns dels millors temes dels tres elapés que va publicar amb Deep Purple, i amb els quals va saltar a la fama: Burn (1974), Stormbringer (1974) i Come Taste the band (1975). La decisió de David Coverdale de tornar a gravar cançons dels seus dies a Deep Purple, ara amb Whitensnake potser ha tocat la fibra sensible a alguns fans, però això no li importa gaire. Tinc una casa amb vistes al llac Tahoe. Tinc 64 anys i un tour mundial per davant, esgotant les entrades....... No editaré alguna cosa que no cregui en ella. He arribat a un moment de la meva vida, després d'una carrera molt reeixida, on faré exactament el que m'agrada. En 40 anys he venut més de 100 milions de discos i escrit innombrables himnes del rock?. Coverdale està satisfet amb el resultat i el seu llegat. Com sempre, quan algú s'atreveix a gravar versions de grups mítics, existeix un temor a no estar a l'alçada, a destrossar un clàssic, encara que també hem vist al llarg dels anys que hi ha covers que milloren fins i tot els originals. Comin Home En resum, és un disc que a Coverdale no l'hi calia fer, però el fa des de l'agraïment, el sentiment i l'ànima. No entenc ni comparteixo en absolut les desaforades critiques dels puristes Purple, al cap i la fi, ell va cantar TOTS aquests temes i en va composar la majoria. Evidentment no es Deep Purple, però no marxen gaire d'allà i sonen potentíssims. Whitesnake (perquè la serp blanca es David Coverdale), per si sols ja tenen un repertori que tomba d'esquena i una gran quantitat d'himnes que formen part de la historia del rock.     Jon Lord June 9 1941 – July 16 2012 Founder member of Deep Purple, Jon Lord was born in Leicester. He began playing piano aged 6, studying classical music until leaving school at 17 to become a Solicitor’s clerk. Initially leaning towards the theatre, Jon moved to London in 1960 and trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama, winning a scholarship, and paying for food and lodgings by performing in pubs. In 1963 he broke away from the school with a group of teachers and other students to form the pioneering London Drama Centre. A year later, Jon “found himself“ in an R and B band called The Artwoods (fronted by Ronnie Wood’s brother, Art) where he remained until the summer of 1967. During this period, Jon became a much sought after session musician recording with the likes of Elton John, John Mayall, David Bowie, Jeff Beck and The Kinks (eg 'You Really Got Me'). In December 1967, Jon met guitarist Richie Blackmore and by early 1968 the pair had formed Deep Purple. The band would pioneer hard rock and go on to sell more than 100 million albums, play live to more than 10 million people, and were recognized in 1972 by The Guinness Book of World Records as “the loudest group in the world”. Deep Purple’s debut LP “Shades of Deep Purple” (1968) generated the American Top 5 smash hit “Hush”. In 1969, singer Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover joined and the band’s sound became heaver and more aggressive on “Deep Purple in Rock” (1970), where Jon developed a groundbreaking new way of amplifying the sound of the Hammond organ to match the distinctive sound of the electric guitar.

The band was formed way back in 1968, and is still going today, although only one founder member is left, drummer Ian Paice. Founder member Jon Lord died in 2012, and although they are both still alive, original bass player Nic Simper and vocalist Rod Evans have long since left the scene. That leaves only Blackmore, who has been doing his own thing in spectacular style with Faerie Queen Candice Night since 1997. It is arguable that Blackmore’s Night are as big as Deep Purple ever were, certainly their music is every bit as inspirational and then some. First, you may see FF a style or genre or a subject you IN have never really considered Tbefore, and think, ‘I want to do that!’ Second, you may see something you have already attempted and think ‘OK, I see why my pictures aren’t as good.’ Third comes negative inspiration, also known as realism, ‘Although I like this picture, I am unlikely ever to emulate it.’ This may include genres you have given up, or subjects you’d prefer to admire in either real life or pictures, rather than shoot. For me, this picture partakes of all three. Perhaps to the surprise of some readers, I was once young and have done a few more or less competent pictures of fairly similar subjects: principally, Bristol-based band Essential Bop and various poets, especially the poet, singer and songwriter Cath Milne. If I’d looked harder at pictures like this, I might have done them all more justice. It comes from ‘Unseen Icons by Phil Griffin: 25 Years in Film & Photography’: an exhibition running until 23 November at the Brownsword Hepworth Gallery in London. While I was waiting for a copy of the picture, I bought a book of Chinese- inspired ink-brush drawings of cats. Each was reduced to a few essential lines.
