  • Jon Lord June 9 1941 – July 16 2012
Jon Lord June 9 1941 – July 16 2012 Founder member of Deep Purple, Jon Lord was born in Leicester. He began playing piano aged 6, studying classical music until leaving school at 17 to become a Solicitor’s clerk. Initially leaning towards the theatre, Jon moved to London in 1960 and trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama, winning a scholarship, and paying for food and lodgings by performing in pubs. In 1963 he broke away from the school with a group of teachers and other students to form the pioneering London Drama Centre. A year later, Jon “found himself“ in an R and B band called The Artwoods (fronted by Ronnie Wood’s brother, Art) where he remained until the summer of 1967. During this period, Jon became a much sought after session musician recording with the likes of Elton John, John Mayall, David Bowie, Jeff Beck and The Kinks (eg 'You Really Got Me'). In December 1967, Jon met guitarist Richie Blackmore and by early 1968 the pair had formed Deep Purple. The band would pioneer hard rock and go on to sell more than 100 million albums, play live to more than 10 million people, and were recognized in 1972 by The Guinness Book of World Records as “the loudest group in the world”. Deep Purple’s debut LP “Shades of Deep Purple” (1968) generated the American Top 5 smash hit “Hush”. In 1969, singer Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover joined and the band’s sound became heaver and more aggressive on “Deep Purple in Rock” (1970), where Jon developed a groundbreaking new way of amplifying the sound of the Hammond organ to match the distinctive sound of the electric guitar.

Sorum McCartney and James Bond get the Guns N’ Roses remained faithful to guitarist Slash and played in the treatment. This popular cover was released in 1991 latter’s Velvet Revolver band. Prior to that, Sorum at a time when G N’ R was probably the most famous was a regular guest drummer for The Cult and played band on the planet. This is naturally a heavier version drums for a very young Tori Amos on her first tour. than the 1972 original but they still captured a lot of More recently Sorum has contributed to a Buddy Rich the song’s underlying humour and playfulness. The tribute album which showcased his technical abilities song features a mix of regular and half-time grooves in jazz drumming. along with a reggae-inspired middle section requiring the drummer to be alert and keep it tight. The player featured here is Matt Sorum. RECOMMENDED LISTENING The G N’ R legacy is based on six studio albums THE BIGGER PICTURE of which the most important by far is their debut, Appetite for Destruction (1987). This record single Matt Sorum’s big rock sound in Guns N’ Roses handedly propelled the band to superstardom and tends to obscure other aspects of his playing.

  • Hipster Black Metal?
Hipster Black Metal? Deafheaven’s Sunbather and the Evolution of an (Un) popular Genre Paola Ferrero A couple of months ago a guy walks into a bar in Brooklyn and strikes up a conversation with the bartenders about heavy metal. The guy happens to mention that Deafheaven, an up-and-coming American black metal (BM) band, is going to perform at Saint Vitus, the local metal concert venue, in a couple of weeks. The bartenders immediately become confrontational, denying Deafheaven the BM ‘label of authenticity’: the band, according to them, plays ‘hipster metal’ and their singer, George Clarke, clearly sports a hipster hairstyle. Good thing they probably did not know who they were talking to: the ‘guy’ in our story is, in fact, Jonah Bayer, a contributor to Noisey, the music magazine of Vice, considered to be one of the bastions of hipster online culture. The product of that conversation, a piece entitled ‘Why are black metal fans such elitist assholes?’ was almost certainly intended as a humorous nod to the ongoing debate, generated mainly by music webzines and their readers, over Deafheaven’s inclusion in the BM canon. The article features a promo picture of the band, two young, clean- shaven guys, wearing indistinct clothing, with short haircuts and mild, neutral facial expressions, their faces made to look like they were ironically wearing black and white make up, the typical ‘corpse-paint’ of traditional, early BM. It certainly did not help that Bayer also included a picture of Inquisition, a historical BM band from Colombia formed in the early 1990s, and ridiculed their corpse-paint and black cloaks attire with the following caption: ‘Here’s what you’re defending, black metal purists.

  • The Cult of the Eye and the Quest for Reality a Meeting
Br J Ophthalmol: first published as 10.1136/bjo.28.6.305 on 1 June 1944. Downloaded from CULT OF THE EYE AND THE QUEST FOR REALITY 305 of sympathetic inflammation. The blind left eye was removed and the sympathizing eye at first improved a good deal under treatment with sulphadiazine. But this improvement did not last; "the inflammation assumed a most violent form with remissions and exacerbations, and in the latter, atophanyl was used with beneficial effects on the inflammation and pain." It was given 13 times. The man had a complete examination, infected teeth and tonsils were removed and the nasal sinuses explored. During treatment a well dilated pupil was maintained by the free use of atropine or scopolamine " and immediately combating a contracting pupil by the- 'coup-sur-coup' method." This- may be described as the alternate instillation of 4 per cent. atropine with 4 per cent. cocaine five minutes apart until four doses of each have been given, the puncta being carefully occluded by finger pressure after each instillation. The man was discharged from hospital-in July, 1942, the eye nearly white, with a few small old synechiae. The slit-lamp showed old deposits on the back of the cornea and dilated iris vessels were much decreased, the fundus was normal, and vision with correction normal. Tuberculin injections were continued by Dr. Laishley for several months, the eye remaining free from inflammation. A recent letter from the patient gave a good report. There seems to be some danger of damage to the liver in giving copyright.
