From its inception as an album, Jesus Christ Superstar has been a popular piece. It also has a rich history of being produced and conceived with different artistic interpretations. The original Broadway production was set in a fantastical post Apocalyptic world, with the theatrics of the production pushed forward to the maximum. The movie, was set as a “Passion Play” with costumes that were a mix of the modern “hippie” era styles and the classic biblical look. or example, the oman soldiers were clad in purple tshirts and camouage pants, while Jesus was dressed in his classic robes. Even the filmed stage version in 2002 was modernized with Judas dressed in a leather jacket and cowboy boots. The liberties we have taken with this production and design are not new to the piece. In fact, rarely has JCSS been rendered in the classic biblical sense. Instead, directors and designers have picked up on the many themes of the show and chosen to set the story in a modern setting to better relate to modern audiences, much like a more recent hit show on Broadway: Hamilton.

Since its arrival, Hamilton has become a cultural phenomenon just as JCSS was in its hay day. With Hamilton, by modernizing the style of the story of America’s forefathers and depicting the revolution using hip-hop/rap music, the geniuses behind that show hoped to affect modern audiences. They went so far as to cast the show in a way that represents what America is now, using African American and Hispanic actors as our forefathers rather than old white men. They hoped that by doing this, the show would reach across the generations and cultural divides to impact people who may otherwise never have listened to a “musical” about the life story of Alexander Hamilton. They unequivocal- ly succeeded. JCSS did close to the same thing when it first came out, and wanted to follow in Hamilton’s footsteps with this show. Like Hamilton, we have a multi-cultural cast and have used modern styles of dance to help the audience connect to the piece. The costumes also reect our desire to incor- porate the modern into “The Greatest Story Ever Told”. We wanted to show certain correlations that blended the past to the present, hopefully helping to depict not just how the societal groups of ancient Jerusalem were then, but how they are now. Nothing on the stage tonight was done by accident. All has been meticulously planned and staged to give you, the audience, a unique and special experience.
