Lucie Podroužková, Ph.D. Author: Mgr. The thesis examines the lives of the adolescent characters in the novel and the process of their maturing as individuals as Well as against the historical background of 1970s Britain. Most importantly, as the characters are secondary school students and much of their life experience and many of their relationships are impacted by the school and played out in the school context. This Will be linked to findings in developmental psychology to better understand What concerns and issues teenagers typically face and What changes, both physical and psychological, they undergo. At the same time, the school culture depicted in the novel Will be examined in the context of the British educational system, its traditions as Well as transformations that are relevant for the temporal frameWork of the story. The assumption that lies beyond this approach is that educational institutions model the aspirations, attitudes and biases of the British society at large and thus their impact on the young generations is crucial. Jonathan Coe, born in 1961, is the author of a number of fictional and nonfictional books, most notably Costa Novel of the Year and Prix du Livre Européen for Middle England. The Rotter’s Club Was first published in 2001 and then in 2005, it Was adapted as a TV series for BBC. (Jonathan Coe. Writer. Web.) The 1970s Britain, Where the story is set, Was a time When Britain underwent some important social and political changes. Those historical issues are more or less part of the story as Well. As Coe says it in the Words of one of his characters, it is called a “brown time.” In terms of politics, there Were some important politicians at the time. James Callaghan and Margaret Thatcher are Worth mentioning. Both of them Were leading the country in times of financial, social and political crises in the 1970s in Which period the story is set as well. 7 A very important role plays the school environment. All the teen characters visit the local King William’s Academy in Birmingham Which seems to have a reference to today’s private and élite school called King Edward Academy. The school has had a long tradition (over 450 years). Nowadays only boys are educated at this school, the school is private and fees for the studies have to be paid. (King Edward’s School Birmingham. Web) The book differs in this aspect from reality it seems to be a school for both boys and girls. These ideas of co-education or separate school systems Will be developed later in this work. In the novel, students are only selected based on the results of their entrance exams, but both boys and girls study at the same school. Because of the selective process of taking the entrance exam, only bright students study at the school, especially those students With a perspective of going to one of the famous British universities - Oxford or Cambridge. This is eventually mentioned in the story, too. This fact encourages competitive moods betWeen some students and the general pressure is developed on each student to follow the expectations of the school and the people around them. This fact Will be discussed later, too. The main characters are all students at the prestigious school, so they spend a lot of time With each other because they attend the same school. They undergo a time of maturing Which is a very important time, especially from the developmental psychological point of vieW. Their own body changes, of course, and there are also emotional changes and psychological development. According to Pugnerová (2019), developmental psychology observes and describes the development of the human mind from birth to death and particularly concerns the phase of childhood and maturing. Adolescents experience neW situations and are supposed to make their own decisions and form their identities. For this reason, We might also look at the story as it Was a fusion of relationships and emotions Which the main characters deal With and together With the environment, all these circumstances influence
