EXECUTIVE SECRETARY’S COLUMN Hello Everyone!

As a coach do you realize the importance of your profession?

Two of my favorite quotes are, one by John Wooden, “A good coach can change a game, a great coach can change a life” and another by Billy Graham, “A coach will impact more young people in a year than an average person does in a lifetime.” So as a coach, you must realize that with being a coach comes great responsibility. If you want to be a suc - cessful coach you have to ask yourself several questions.

Drew Potthoff • Am I building athletes up with the way I coach or am I tearing them down? Executive Secretary • Is my main focus of coaching on winning games or developing young athletes? Illinois Coaches • Am I more concerned with my program, the strength program, my summer program than with the academic Association success and the development of the whole athlete in my program? • Will my influence on my athletes transcend beyond the win-loss record?

As coaches, we must always be self-assessing the way we coach and our priorities. The coaching profession demands that we be life- long learners, not only with the aspects of our sport but with how we are building our athletes in all aspects of their lives.

Below in an excerpt from one of the Coaches Corner articles in this issue:

In his book, InSideOut Coaching , Coach Joe Ehrmann describes two types of coaches: transactional and transformative. Transactional coaches, he writes, “use players as tools to meet their personal needs for validation, status and identity.” In contrast, transformational coaches use “their coaching platform to impart life-changing messages.” They are “Other-cen - tered. They use their power and platform to nurture and transform players.” The question is: what kind of coach are you?

As coaches we have been entrusted with our nation’s most precious commodity: our children. I take the responsibility of the Illinois Coaches Association to help develop the coaches in Illinois in all ways possible very seriously. I hope you find the information and articles in this issue of the TORCH, and all of the issues to follow, useful in helping you be a successful coach.

Building positive and safe cultures within a program should be a priority for all coaches and administrators. Each month we w! ill share FIVE tips to help you develop safe, positive programs in the areas that have" t#h$e% g! &re# '(atest impact: Team Culture, Parent Engagement, Policy Development and Communication.

BBee ccacarcarecarefcarefucarefulareful aababoabouaboutbout mmamakmakimakinmakingaking ffrfrefresfreshfreshmfreshmereshme n ccacarcarrcarryarry eeqequequiequipequipmequipmeequipmenequipmentquipment . I know it sounds like blasphemy to s ay that the time -honored tradition of having freshme n carry equipment is problematic, but it is. Her e’s why: When a coach sets up a rule that only freshmen carry equipment, he Tip # 1 or she makes it about one group being “less than” another. It sets up a power dynamic that can be detrimental and creates a culture where some players appear to be valued more than others. If you don’t appear to value the freshmen, it sends the message that it is okay for older players to belittle them, too. And that sets the stage for hazing. Instead think about instituting a servant leadership mode l whereby the leadership qualities that are valued are one of humility, service, and sportsmanship.

S StStrStruStrucStructStructuStructurStructuretructure tteteateameam rreretretrretreretrearetreatretreatsetreats ! Everyone believes that if a team goes away into the woods t ogether for a weekend, players will bond. It doesn’t happen that way. While it’s important to allow your athletes to determine their own rituals and traditions, they shouldn’t do it in Tip # 2 a silo. These choices should be facilitated by staff and monitored by staff. Retreats should be viewed as classrooms. Each minute away should have a purpose. Your daily practices have plans, and so should any type of retreat. Without this type of structure in place, it becomes easy for hazing to surface. d

WWaWatWatcWatchatch tththehe llalanlanglangulangualanguaglanguageanguage yyoyouou uususese . So much of the language we use in coaching is automatic. We don ’t think about its impact. But it has tremendous impact. For instance, when we say things l ike, “t ake off the skirt,” or “s top playing like a girl,” we teac h male athletes that Tip # 3 there is nothing worse than being referred to a s a girl and that girls are weak . In addition to demeaning women using this , and similar language with your players also teaches them that it’s acceptable to degrade each other —the first step to condoning hazing . Teaching our players to be mentally and physically resilient should be done by inspiration not in timidation or denigration .

TTeachTeTeaTeaceach athletesaatathathlathleathletathletethletes toto SSPSPESPEASPEAKPEAK UUPUP.P. Often, we tell athletes that they need to “have each other ’s back ” but we don ’t take the time to define what that means and it can lead to blind loyalty . Letting athletes know that when they see something that is harmful to others or to them Tip # 4 it’s not just okay to speak up, but expected. By doing this you ensure t hat you aren ’t the only set of eyes and ears making sure that hazing doesn ’t occur. On BAD teams, no one leads. On AVERAGE teams, coaches lead. On GREAT teams, players lead. He lp your pl ayer s lead by rem indi ng them they have a voi ce.

TTaTalTalkalk aababoabouaboutbout hhahazhazihazinhazingazing aalallll tththehe ttitimtimetime.ime. If you don ’t make this a topic you address, then it co uld eventua lly happen. You must take the time to let your athletes know that it is something Tip # 5 that is unacceptable. And when you see something that looks like hazing or you think could set up fertile ground for hazing you must address it immediately .
